I know this is a long shot, but I wanted to hear someone's opinion on this. I am an Idaho resident (LizzyM: 72), and have not submitted my AMCAS application this cycle because I did not think I would meet the shadowing requirement for UW (turns out I was recently able to). Would it be too late/a bad idea to complete the application and apply to just regional schools this cycle, Utah and Washington?

So TBH, I would hold off if I were you and just wait another year. Your Lizzy M is good enough to matriculate, but applying this late seems like shooting yourself in the foot. An extra year would mean strengthening your application, while applying now would not only mean you're unnecessarily at a disadvantage but you're also setting yourself up to potentially reapply--and for schools, it doesn't matter if you've applied there before or not, if you've applied to any school you're a reapplicant. I understand if you don't wanna wait a year though, just my two cents. FWIW, I decided to wait a year and I'm super glad I did

IMO it is probably a waste of time and money this late in the cycle. You seem to have solid stats so there is no point in trying to apply right now. Wait until next cycle when you can be early and reap the benefits. I applied earlier than you're asking about (late August) and wasn't verified until basically today last cycle and it really really hurt my chances and according to admissions was the main reason I got waitlisted. So use this time off to strengthen any weak areas (everyone has them!) and apply as a prepared and solid applicant next year.

Just to throw this out there again. As an Idaho resident to these two specific schools, the poster is not at a disadvantage applying this late. They do not do rolling admissions the way other schools do and they have specified interview dates and a small group of people they are compared against. I applied to both of these schools in mid September and was accepted to both with average stats. Like I mentioned above, if the application is mediocre or said person cannot turn a secondary in quickly, they shouldn’t do it. I can agree that if it is an unsuccessful cycle, ALL schools will consider a student as a reapplicant and that is not as favorable. That would be my only concern however, keeping in mind that I know nothing about their application.

Thanks everyone for the input! I was feeling a little antsy and was hoping I wouldn't have to wait another year, but I'll probably just play it on the safe side and wait till next cycle. The rest of my application is fairly strong, but I would rather not risk an increased chance of becoming a reapplicant if I don't need to. Plus, it will be nice to work and save some money in the meantime.

Is anyone still awaiting residency verification? I sent in the documentation 6 weeks ago and have still yet to hear anything.

Hi everyone- first time posting here! I was wondering if anyone received a "Mission Statement Request?" It clearly says in the email that this is not a secondary but that they want more information about how I fit their mission statement. I went ahead and sent it in, as there was no charge but I haven't heard of this before...?

I don’t think so. Looking back on the thread I’d gotten my II before that, but there’s no point in analyzing! I’m just being impatient, shocker! Hah!

It’s also based on your site preference. If you chose Spokane, or one of the WWAMI sites, then you’ll interview later. I think Seattle is the only one that starts this early.

yes it is very much base on site. From what I was told all Alaskan applicants interview sometime in January. Also that it is non-rolling admission for WWAMI or at least the Alaska site

Hey UWIdahoan, do you mind if I PM you about the rest of my application? I keep jumping back and forth and if you have the time I'd really appreciate your help. Thanks.

They interview one week in January and one week in February. They try to let you know at least one month in advanced that they want you to interview. They will probably get back to you by mid November though and you’ll be looking at the January interview dates.

Edit: You definitely could hear back earlier than that, just to be clear.

Are these the only dates for interviews for Idaho residents?

I just got my verification today (at just under 7 weeks since they marked it received). Hopefully you'll also hear back soon!

Not sure about the timeline for residency verification. I’m IS but they didn’t ask me to verify. You could try sending them an email. 🙂

Rejected today pre-II. IS. On the upside, none of my other rejections will hurt as bad as this one. 🙁 Congrats to everyone who got an interview, and best of luck to you!

Im sorry to hear this 🙁 I'm still waiting to hear back as well. I'm literally checking my email everyday :inpain:

Do you mind sharing if you are In region or Out Of Region and when your application was marked complete?
Sure, I was in region and my application was marked complete 8/9. Hang in there!

So we wait for them to schedule us for the interview? I'm confused by their email.

They will send you an e-mail with instructions and you'll have a new "interview" tab on the portal. Took about three weeks from the II to the scheduling e-mail for me.

Pretty sure UW's admissions are not rolling. This means they don't have "late" or "early" they only have on time or not considered. So as long as you meet the deadlines and you're in region your chance of acceptance the same regardless of how early you turn it in. For ID residents I think it's 33% chance of acceptance... seems good enough to me.

I think it’s actually closer to a 22% acceptance rate in Idaho. Last I heard around 170-180 people apply each year and 40 are accepted. Wait list movement can be very minimal now that the class is done expanding.

The rest of this post is gold though.

Taken straight from UW's website (Admissions Frequently Asked Questions | UW Medicine)

"Washington applicants have a 15% chance of being accepted (same for Spokane and Seattle). Wyoming residents have a 34% chance of being accepted. Alaska residents have a 22% chance of being accepted. Montana residents have a 32% chance of being accepted. Idaho residents have a 19% chance of being accepted. Applicants whose state of residence is outside of the WWAMI region have a 0.42% chance of being accepted."

Plus these are overall acceptance percentages. This changes once you have an II, and all GPAs/MCATs are NOT created equal. Scroll down to get an idea of what I am talking about for the MCAT/GPA grid (Expectations | UW Medicine). Whether these numbers mean that higher-performing students tend to perform better on all aspects of their app including ECs or the effect is driven based on stats alone remains to be seen.

Admissions are rolling. Half of the class is accepted around March.

Pre-secondary rejection via email. OOR. This one stings but I wasn't expecting one anyway. a big thanks to those who have answered my OOR likelihood to receive a secondary question here! Good luck to you all!

Submitted my residency verification 7/31, submitted my secondary 8/2... still not verified as a WA resident... I feel like the residency verification is negating my early submission. 🙁

Early submission doesn't give you anything at this school... except maybe peace of mind.
Also that's longer than the 6weeks indicated in the residency verification email. Did you email them?

I think being early actually helps a lot when it comes down to it. You’ve got a much better shot when you submit early.

Keeping in mind that while UW has been known to bend the truth a little (a lot) they're usually pretty transparent when asked.

This is from the FAQ on the UW website (Hint: it's on the internet where answers to 90% of SDN questions):

Does applying later in the process (late August/early September) disadvantage the applicant?

Not at this school. As long as you meet our deadlines, you are fine. It may be different at other medical schools. You need to allow time for processing through the AAMC. Keep our deadlines in mind. Do not wait until the last minute.

Does it help your chances to submit your application early, say in July, vs. later, like September?

You would go through screening earlier and be interviewed earlier, although it doesn't really matter. We have a rolling admissions process. We start accepting applicants in October and by the end of the interview season in March we have accepted half of the class.

I haven't emailed them, they actually needed more documents than what I gave them and it added another one to two weeks to the whole things. Tomorrow will be the two week mark so I'll email them. I think an early submission might be helpful if they, in my case, put me back in the queue where I should be according to my submission date. I guess we will find out!

Not to get in an argument online lol but full disclosure I’m a reapplicant and the issue (from the UW feedback session I had) with my first application was applying late. They told me I had a good interview and a solid application but I got shunted to the back of the waitlist since they had already made decisions on a lot of people who interviewed before me. Ultimately, there are only so many spots in the class so while they may say that they don’t care online in reality the earlier you apply and the earlier you interview will positively impact your spot on the waitlist if you aren’t accepted or rejected outright. There are no rewards for applying late in other words. Take this with a grain of salt because if you know you have amazing stats and a well rounded app you might have a little more flexibility. I worry that people on this thread will take what you’ve posted and use it as rationale for spending too much time editing and polishing an already solid application or just procrastinating. Instead, you should make sure it’s good then turn it in ASAP since you’re not doing yourself any favors to wait.

Appreciate you sharing that feedback!

I just want to make it clear that admissions is rolling for Seattle students (100 total). You could be accepted in October or in March. It is NOT for WAMI students (110 total) as they mostly do one week of interviews and literally decide on their class for that state that very Friday.

Note: Spokane feels like a grey area of in between here. I feel like they have made adjustments to their process over the last few years that I have not kept up with. Someone else can speak for Spokane.

Could you link me to where it talks about this on their website? Are there specific dates when Seattle applicants hear back?

I was scrolling through the SDN thread from last year, and it seems like the committee meets once a month or so, and releases decisions after that meeting (so no specific dates). It also looked like most people didn't get a rejection or acceptance after the first meeting, and instead were considered for another month or several. Basically, I'm thinking one month out is probably a realistic timeframe to hear back, but not necessarily to get an acceptance or rejection.

Once you receive a residency verification request, is there any alternative to explaining your situation if you're obviously a WA resident? Seems like a ridiculous wait time... I am employed in WA and live here/have lived here for years?

Starting to get stressed about this residency questionnaire... I submitted it 7/30 and heard back last week that I hadn't sent in enough documentation. IS resident my whole life but went to college OOS. Now they need another 1-2 weeks to process the new documents, is anyone else having this issue?? Any advice?
