Just received confirmation that my primary application was received by VCU and that I was granted a secondary!

Hopefully that means that I have no major red flags on my application assuming that the secondary screen is significant?

Yay! It’s a basic stats screen plus an unspecified amount of volunteering from what I got

Really struggling with the VCU secondary question. Been sitting on it for about a week, and I still do not know how to best approach the secondary question. Does anyone have any advice to offer?

Most people I know picked one aspect to focus on, either the "medicine is always changing" or "how to motivate patients" part. Personally, I focused on the second part. Try googling "patient motivation" for ideas.

Does anybody know if I just graduated college and am applying to medical school, do I need to answer the second essay question asking about gaps in education?

What does the question say exactly?

Regardless, I would say put in what you are doing this year, especially if it's clinical or medical related.

I just called the office and they said to leave it blank or put N/A. I dont have the exact question anymore but it said something along the lines of did you have any gaps in your undergraduate education or between graduation and applying to medical school, if so please explain why, etc.

Is CASper required for completion? I just received a complete email and my app is under review but my CASper is not there yet at least from what the CASper website says

@Dean Mission Have you started sending out MD/PhD interview invites? If not, when is the first wave expected? Thank you!
MD/PhD interviewees undergo a slightly different review process that overlaps with the general admissions pool, but which is program-specific in how it is administrated. Interview invites are ongoing for this program currently.

Rejected today after submitting my application yesterday. OOS.
Woah what! I can’t tell if that means they’ve reviewed all the apps up until tomorrow or this was the result of an auto screen

Either way, good luck with the rest of your cycle man!

Yeah, I was quite surprised myself. I was expecting a rejection, but this was much sooner than I had thought.
Thank you so much!

Sorry to hear that! Especially right after turning in your secondary :/ Would you mind sharing stats?

Got the 'Subcommittee will do a review' email on 7/27. I'm OOS, but keeping :xf:! Hoping to hear something soon.

Me too! I'm IS and this is my top choice so I'm really hoping to hear some good news from them soon.

Been under review since 7/14. At least it seems like VCU is very straight forward with rejections, which I appreciate. I suppose no news is good news at this point.
It also doesnt look like OOS IIs have gone out. I got the email around the same time as you and nada so lets hope for the best

How does VCU send out IIs? Do they just update the portal or do you get an email?

totally forgot about this secondary
Any tips on how to answer the secondary question?

Anyone else here an 8/30 interview? Looking forward to it!
And if anyone has some tips and tricks on how they prepare for MMI's, please drop your wisdom here!!

Got the status change in the portal indicating my review is now complete. pretty disappointed as it seems like a hold, although at least 1 person on here had that before II. at least it's not a rejection I suppose

"Your File Review is now complete. If you are granted an interview, you will receive a status update on your applicant portal. Please do not call the Admissions Office requesting special dates."
I don’t think that’s a hold. Last year it was the “committee is interested in your candidacy” that was the hold but it also led to II

Last year's response from @Dean Mission about this status: "As you progress through the tiered process of review, your file will be binned and held at certain points. Your message indicates you have reached the terminal point of file review. Depending upon your score, you may or may not receive an interview. Given the message you received, it seems likely you are an out-of-state resident. VCU typically interviews ~635 people, so interview slots will be filled with applicants as they are available and in conjunction with their file review scores."

Thanks for pulling this out from the archives, I'm clearly too lazy to do any research from previous threads lol. Interesting bit about it being likely for an OOS applicant as this is one of my state schools. Will wait and see what happens

VCU has a pretty favorable OOS interview rate if you get past the secondary screen right?

From my estimation: ~7000 primary OOS applications -> ~2,500 secondaries -> ~350 OOS interviews

Hopefully they favor residents from surrounding states 🙂
