2019-2020 Albany

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I was complete around 8/10. Just looked at my portal and it says my LOR were received 9/26. Does anyone else have this discrepancy? It doesnt make sense, as other schools received them far earlier

This is likely a common thing. I was complete mid July with letters marked received end of August. It's probably some quirk of their system. Wouldn't read into it so much.

Do you think it's too late to get an II from here ( for an A, not WL)? I haven't gotten an R either but this is one of my favorite MD programs...

No we hold positions to accept people straight out. I had several friends who interviewed in February or March who are my classmates now.

@Mathemedics I noticed a change to a much later date on all letters when I sent in a new LOR at a later date. This may e the reason, if you did the same!

Any last minute tips for interviewing here? This is my first MMI so I'm definitely nervous. TIA!

Got my interview invitation on November 18th and I'm scheduled to interview in January...I was genuinely surprised since I'm a re-applicant. Of those who interviewed, how did you like the area and vibe of the school? Also, do my chances of having an acceptance significantly drop with such a late interview in January?

EDIT: January 29th

interviewed in october and still waiting to hear back 🙁 ... starting to lose hope.

Are they known for not liking re-applicants?

Are they known for not liking re-applicants?

When I said this I mostly meant that I didn't make any significant changes between my first and second application and they rejected me the first time I applied. So they were probably one of the last schools I expected to get an II. I was incredibly surprised and thankful!

Can really only comment on the area and the vibe.

As someone who has lived within or near a major urban center all their life, moving to a place like Albany would definitely be a huge adjustment, both in terms of lifestyle and climate. It's definitely a nice town with adequate stuff to do, as well as having multiple transportation options to travel to more populated areas (Boston, NYC, etc.) on the weekends. However, it is COLD. I interviewed in early September, and even then I thought it was cold. Multiple current students joked about having to dig their car out of the snow. I can't imagine how frigid it gets during the deep of winter.

Vibe-wise, I liked it. Pretty easygoing, nothing negative to comment about overall. I think the biggest things to consider (if you are not from the area like me) are, again, the area being relatively isolated (definitely not rural, but more of a small-town feel imo) and the weather if you're from a warmer climate. Other than that, I liked the school a lot. The attached medical center is definitely a big plus.

It snowed 22 inches here two weeks ago and we’re about to get another 6 tomorrow. Employees and students are expected to park in shuttle lots that are not covered, which means yes, digging your car out of all that snow after being on campus all day. It’s been -4 degrees when I’ve commuted in already this season, and it’s barely just begun.

The weather here is no joke, it is something people unfamiliar with northern climates should seriously take into consideration if given a choice. It’s not just a mild inconvenience, it’s a 5-month nightmare you’ll be living for the next 4 years.

source: grew up here, still live here, work at AMC

edit: y’all laugh but I won’t have any Californians asking why nobody told them that it’ll snow for 4 straight days and that they have to shovel 10+ times before it stops

But i agree w you, you have to take everything into consideration

Does anyone know when second look weekend is? I have some flight points I need to spend by new years and was hoping to put them towards that but I don't see any info in the portal.

Do People usually hear back on Mondays? Or any day of the week?
Just did a quick search through the thread and it seems like any day of the week. Several people were accepted on a Monday, both this month and last, but not sure if that is just pure coincidence.

how long is albany's interview season?

also, can any current students or people who have interviewed comment on the letter graded system? does it foster a more competitive rather than supportive environment for the students? is it generally viewed as a major school con or do people like it?

We interview through March. Generally people don’t care about the grading system after the first test. Over 90% of the class is going to get a straight “pass” a G on exams. There is the option to work to get honors on themes, but a lot of students prefer to spend time on extracurriculars, studying for step, or research.
