2019-2020 Howard

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How did y’all get the updates? Just via email? I emailed admissions about an update and they sent me an email about what are the requirements for admissions. I am so confused

To those who have been accepted, does anyone know if we are eligible for donor scholarships as incoming M1 students?

WL yesterday. When do you guys think there will be a lot of WL movement?
Most likely April, since that's when people have to narrow down their med schools to three (April 15th) and definitely around April 30th, when people must choose one school. I'd start looking out towards the end of March for Howard though; they have quite a lot of WL movement, and I wouldn't be surprised if it started around then.

Do you mean private scholarships? So far, all I've heard about is federal loans/grants and the tuition waivers they give for the top 10 incoming M1s.

There will be. At one of my interviews, some of the interviewees (~4) personally told me they have acceptances from Howard but will most likely decline later. Thats to say that most people already accepted will be withdrawing especially later in the cycle. I hope this calms you down and goodluck!

I was wondering the same thing. But if I remember correctly during my interview in Nov, most donor scholarships are for rising M2 students. There is a limit on variation in amount of scholarships for incoming M1 students. However, I could be dead wrong.

Called Rozanna J. Aitcheson in financial aid today & was told that incoming M1’s are unable to receive donor scholarships.

hey guys, I'm hoping to apply this summer to Howard, I attended first Friday and really liked it a lot. I'm scared My MCAT and GPA will not give me a chance at admissions. Do You guys think it would be worth applying to the school this year with a 3.2(Stong Upward Trend) and 499 MCAT? Do I have a chance ?

I say all this in nothing but love. And I am DEFINITELY not the expert in all this, I can only tell you my experience and my opinion. I have been accepted to Howard with a lower MCAT 498 but a higher GPA. With HBCUs and Howard especially, I believe that they really do look at an applicant in a holistic way, so I do think you have a shot. However, this process is competitive. If you do decide to apply, definitely make sure your writing in your experiences and personal statement are ON POINT! And get experience, advice, and practice with interviews. As another option, post-Bacs and Master programs are always look positively upon, especially if you bring up your GPA and MCAT during that time. All in all, we need you in medicine, so definitely keep striving!

I know they said they're giving out II's until April but why do I feel like I won't ever hear from them 🙁 I went to First Friday and spoke with many people there, sent them grade updates and called a few times here and there as well. I'm just praying that my effort will bring good news within the next few weeks but god I'm so anxious!

Since I don’t know much about you beyond your stats, my biggest piece of advice is to pay close attention to Howard’s mission (serving underserved communities) and center your application around that mission! Howard is heavily mission-based, and if you fit that mission well with your experiences and goals going forward, I think you’ll have a good chance. Basically, see how your personal mission and Howard’s mission align.

A general word of advice: always look at the mission of the schools you’re applying to. A lot of them are mission-driven; see if/where you fit in to their mission and tailor your secondary apps accordingly.

Cogilli voiced my remaining thoughts on the matter. I’d also add in this as well, and I say this with a lot of love: depending on the schools you apply to (not sure if you’re only applying to Howard), you’ll likely have to explain your GPA/MCAT scores. Just be prepared with a good explanation, and I’d really focus that explanation on what you learned during your college/MCAT experience and what you hope to improve on going forward. End the explanation on a good note.

Hope that helps!

I feel you 🙁 I’ve done all that I can it feels like with updates, phone calls, etc. all that we can do it this point is hope for the best

Hey 😉
I've been following this thread for a while but after waiting for what feels like years for an II, I thought I'd make an account and join in. I'm wondering if there have been any traditional or international students who've had luck with interviews and what your experience is.

Oh... lol. But honestly it’s been such silence I would’ve been grateful if they had sent me this :bigtears:

Sure! I'll PM you.

If anyone else wants in, PM me!

I can only tell you my own experience, as well, but I was accepted and have only a 2.8 cGPA. I do, however, have a 520 MCAT which probably helped. So, there’s a low MCAT with high GPA and a low GPA with high MCAT. Low on both ends would certainly be tougher. So, what’s left to be high at? ECs, Research, Leadership, etc? All you can do is your best! Just make sure that you are actually doing your best and never settling for less than that. Control what you can control and let God handle the rest.

I know it is hard to do, but just try to stay positive . Sometimes , when you least expect a blessing is when it comes!

I will take your mcat score report with a grain of salt. Congrats though!

Anyone know if the admin office is still open amidst the coronavirus pandemic?

I wonder how COVID19 affects those of us waiting to hear back about admissions .... NOT to say that’s what’s most important atm... everybody’s safety comes first , of course !!!! I’m just wondering if they’ll push everything back at this point including orientation.

Anyway, stay safe guys ! Nothing but prayers and positive vibes to you all and your families ❤️

Not sure....they are closed until April 6

How do you know that exact date of April 6th, @patchadams2? Their website doesn't mention it (at least from what I saw on the main HUCM site and FAQs page). However, I called them and the voicemail message for the front desk admissions says they are on break until March 23....

Meanwhile, let's all stay safe. Thankful to all the healthcare workers who are at the front lines. Send up prayers this nightmare pandemic ends soon, God willing. <3

I just saw this email from them.

Have you heard back from them yet? I got this email, but I haven't heard back about my application, so there may be a correlation.

I didn’t get this email but I’ve interviewed there?

Did anyone who interviewed there get the COVID-10 email?
