2019-2020 Howard

I have noticed that they are particular about MCAT scores aka they must be > 505 atleast. MSAR says otherwise but people posting on here always have higher MCATS so it is confusing.
 
I also received an acceptance this afternoon via email!! I interviewed on 11/26.

They told us we should be hearing back by mid-December, but I was not expecting them to notify me this fast! In addition, they still had people from the previous interview date that they needed review according to adcom.

I'm not sure if that's true because I know a few students from previous cycles who have interviewed and been accepted below 505. I honestly think they look at your entire application collectively.

SDN isn’t a fair representation of the applicant pool though. It’s very likely that there are people getting interviews with a 505 or less who just haven’t posted here for a variety of reasons.

Do you just pay the $100 fee, or do you also have to pay the $300 fee? My understanding is that $100 is the Good Faith Fee, and then the $300 is the commit to enroll fee. But it's not clear if I have to pay both at the same time.

That means you destroyed the interview!!! Congrats!!! & be proud! Huge accomplishment. Whatever you’re doing keep doing !!

Thank you for your very kind words. I was very surprised, but I think it's important to highlight that each applicant has their own story to tell. No one in adcom knows your story better than you do.

Congrats!!! Stats? I haven't heard back from them after secondary is there still hope or just a silent R?
 
Looking for some advice? Application submitted/complete 9 weeks ago now - no word (other than that disappointing winter break email). My stats are on the lower side & according to one other post here, people with higher stats are interviewed first?? Is there any hope at this point? Mainly, is Howard responsive to letters of intent or inquiry?

They said they had about 20 more interview slots for the Spring semester. I believe they must have sent all 120 acceptances for the incoming class but they continue to interview because they know people will rescind their offer for other schools or other reasons. They only interview about 8-10 students per each interview slot. They also will only interview 350 students this cycle. So perhaps they have about 200 interview slots left for students but I don't know how many interview invitations they have extended into the near year.

FYI: Adcom just sent an email stating they will be closed for Winter break from Dec. 16 until Jan 2.

There's still hope until you get that R. However, you just submitted your app 9 weeks ago. A lot of people submitted their application back in July and still haven't heard anything. Patience is key here. They are very slow.

I also think that adcom interviews people with a range of stats. Just from what i gathered they try to find people from different backgrounds to try to create a diverse cohort of students.
 
Does anyone know where I can see the match list or rotation sites for clinical years that isn’t Howard University Hospital?
 
is there a facebook page for accepted students? and if so, is that facebook page for ALL accepted students or the ones who enrolled?

Yes, they send you an email with the link. It’s for all accepted students.

Honestly, I don’t think they will be publicly displaying this information online. My only guess, most students aren’t matching into competitive programs, and likely aren’t getting their 1st and 2nd choice schools. (they did show like 8-10 schools that some folks matched into out of the 120 students, indicating that it is not impossible). Hopefully I am 100% wrong and there is another reason.
 
Hi! Really dumb question but is there a proper template as to how I can send updates !! I retook classes and wanted to update Howard with my grades !!
 
There's a huge part of getting into Howard that is based on who you know at the school. They have first Fridays for people to come and see the medical school. I would advise that if you are near the area and are still waiting on an interview/decision, i would strongly advise you to visit and get your name out there to the admissions committee. While I'm sure going to these events can get you noticed by the adcoms, I wouldn't say that it is "a huge part of getting in."

You’d be surprised when it comes to this institution. I won’t speak on something I know nothing about. Don’t get me wrong, having the stats that Howard wants is the first step of getting through the door just like any institution.
But it is naive for any of us to think this whole application cycle is fair and equal in all parts in regards to how applicants are reviewed and accepted at every institution.
That’s my take.

It's 100% within your right to speak from your personal experiences, but just to give a different perspective, I will also offer mine. I have a sub-3.00 GPA (i.e. not the stats any med school wants lol) and I was accepted on 10/15 to Howard. I have never set foot on their campus before interview day and I knew no one. Everyone else I spoke with on my interview day was from outside D.C., so the likelihood of attending a first Friday was low.

I think that Howard is a very mission-driven school and Ms. Williams-Fowlkes told us during the interview that if one person withdraws their application, the adcoms will replace them with someone who fits the same profile. They have a very specific idea of what they want their class to look like, and I assume that is how they choose who to interview and accept. I'm not on the admissions committee, so I don't know how many "shady dealings" go on, if any, but I do know that for me, there were absolutely zero.

We are saying the same thing but from different angles. Admission of each applicant is different. I admit I misspoke for saying a “huge part” of getting into Howard is what I stated above.
However there are individuals who will get in through means that are different from yours and this isn’t only specific to Howard. I was just saying I’ve known ppl that went to first Friday and I guess they fit the mission like you said and their app was pulled up for further consideration waiting for so long to be reviewed. We don’t live in a fair world that evaluates us on the same level and that’s something that becomes more obvious as we go through this path to becoming physicians.
I’m not saying this to discourage anyone but sometimes you don’t get into certain positions whether it be school or jobs because someone else knew someone you didn’t know. Tons of qualified applicants don’t get into due to this and of course limited seats
I am sure that Howard chooses ppl based on their missions of course. I’m not taking that away from them. They’re a fantastic institution but no place is perfect in all their practices.

Also, Congrats on your acceptance and I’m sure you’ll make a fantastic physician!

I agree with you so much. I truly feel that is what helped me. I attended First Friday amongst other things before I applied and after I applied and I network my butt off. I was able to be interviewed and accepted with a not so great, AT ALL MCAT score. But once again this is only my perspective.

Thank you! I feel like I came off like I was saying people that get in got in through shady means which I feel bad about. However, there's a saying "there's more than one way to skin a cat". Every applicant and acceptance differs whether we want to admit it or not.

From a fellow sub 3.00 GPAer, what about your application do you believe got you an interview at Howard? (Please don't say you gotta 520 MCAT lol)

I definitely didn't have a 520 MCAT lol, I actually took the MCAT five times, with the final score being a 513. From a stats perspective, I have a pretty significant upward trend (4.00 for the past ~70 credits I've taken). The reason my cumulative GPA is so low is because I failed every single course back in the 2012-2013 academic year. I had way too much on my plate and stopped going to class (I know, it was stupid).

I think what was even more important than my stats though was how well rounded my application was. I didn't just tick the boxes, I made sure that all my experiences were things I was genuinely interested in and that allowed me to write meaningfully about their impact on my personal growth. I also have a very clear and well documented interest in serving minority and immigrant communities. I think Howard was a great fit for my application overall and that's why I was invited.

I knew ABSOLUTELY NO ONE from adcom. I'm not affiliated with the school in any way. I live across the country in California. Never been to DC prior to interviewing. I have absolutely no connection to Howard and I got in. I do think that it might help a bit if that's if you're connected connected as in you know someone who actually knows adcom. Other than that, they made it clear that they look for a diverse background of students with different qualities. But that's my 2 cents.

I agree, there could a factor but it's not as big one might think. Just depends on how good that connection is. But I do think Howard is fair. Equal? Maybe not entirely but it's also not discriminatory.

This is def. my same experience. If any shady dealings were occurring I'm so grateful they did it to me haha. Accepted 12/3/19.
Either way, I do think they do their best of finding students based on a profile they seek. They have stressed that they don't go down the waitlist in order, but rather they fill in that seat with someone with a similar profile, which I like. I don't need another 119 students who are much like me. That would be boring. lol
