Behind every profile is someone wishing and hoping to be selected. I cannot stress that every single person looking at this thread is worthy of being what you envision of yourself. My wish to you all is that you get in. But more importantly, my wish is that if you're trajectory to medicine is not Howard to recognize that it is not because you are not worthy but because what is for you is somewhere else.

To my future peers, please be mindful that if Howard is not for you there is someone out there hoping for a chance. Be kind to them and give them an opportunity to tell their stories in front of the committee if you know that Howard is not a place you see yourself at. The longer we hold our spots the less chance someone else might have. We all deserve this opportunity.

To be fair, I think regardless if a school publishes their step average scores/rates the entire process is really down to the student. Each student has the potential to maximize their score at this point. Yes, it's discouraging that they aren't transparent but ultimately, if you aren't a good student and don't have a good study foundation your score isn't going to change regardless of the school you go to.

I think Howard selects students based on on the premise, in part, that the applicant is willing to serve underserved communities. As an applicant, I think we all have a vision of where we see each other (i.e. maybe surgery, urology, nephrology, internal medicine, etc) but the reality is that a majority of us really have no idea what speciality we want if we've had no prior exposure. It's one thing to shadow but another thing to be the provider. This goes to say that going to a US medical school is still a privilege, regardless of the school. All schools are accredited by the same accrediting body. I know a few people who went to the Caribbean and managed to obtain amazing residencies. Ergo, I truly believe that if the student wants a specific trajectory then the student will work for it. Nothing is impossible but it takes some effort.

I agree that it's ultimately the student's responsibility. I personally know doctors who went to Howard (and also the Caribbean and DO) who were able to match into great residencies in their desired specialty (even competitive fields like neurosurgery and derm). They mentioned that it may take more effort, but it's definitely possible.

And it's true that Howard takes students with lower stats, so it's expected that Step scores will be lower. However, we know these scores do not necessarily correlate with being a good physician lol. Work hard wherever you go y'all, and be good doctors!
 
For those of you that have been accepted here, do you know when they typically notify about scholarships?

I think they still are. I sent an update letter and they encouraged me to attend their open house on February 7th. The email recapped my update (so it was made personally) but I’m not sure if the invite was perfunctory or personal.

If acceptances for December interviews went out today, then I expect acceptances for January interviews will go out later this week or next Tuesday.

How soon did they respond to your update letter? I sent one but I never heard back on whether or not they received it.

I sent it at 7:44 PM at night and they responded the next morning (9:10 AM).

I recommend you contacting them. When I sent mine, I didn't hear back from them for a month. I called the office and a few minutes later I received the confirmation. The subject of the email was Re: [SPAM]:..... So I think some of our emails end up in their spam folder, which they forget to check/don't check often.

I know it's still early but does anyone have a clue of where they're looking to live next year? When will we get more info regarding on-campus apartments?
 
hi guys. if any of you have been to Howard for an interview, and the medical students were in the lab dissecting, I can guarantee you I was the most disheveled looking one in the batch haha

I am an M1 and I caught the tail end of what you guys were posting about in here. I want to add my $0.02

An old mentor of mine said it best:
"Getting into a US MD medical school, period, is like getting into the NBA or the NFL: it might not be the team you dreamed of, but you're still a certified pro player. We all know what teams our favorite players are on, but do we always know what teams they started on?"

With that being said, once you are in, you can get a match list if you ask. Most of the matches are decent/pretty good in quality but there are also PLENTY that are like.....astonishingly impressive.

If you come here, just work hard. Period. IF you suck here, you'll suck anywhere but there is just less benefit of the doubt for HBCUs. Still, if your numbers are on point coming out of Howard, you'll get the lovely added bonus of the "woke, culturally competent MD" vibe (which will also be true and incredibly unique). This is a huge advantage given our social climate right now and its trajectory. Otherwise, if you skate by, you'll catch the brunt of that negative stigma that some of you may have heard of (or are concerned about) that surrounds HBCU medical schools: it's really a double edged sword.

Howard does an excellent job selecting a cohesive cohort that makes it easy for your classes and events to feel like a united team/family enduring the storm that is US medical education. The alumni from Howard are legendary and goddamned gung-ho about supporting medical students. You guys aren't really going to get that anywhere else and it means a lot when the going gets rough and the help needs to get got.

YOU just need to prioritize what matters to you. If you want that cold, hard prestige (which I'm not mad at you for it at all lol) then you might need to readjust your list accordingly. However, if you want to match well and meet some of the coolest people ever while learning science from POC, by POC, for all, then I'd say you couldn't go wrong coming here.

Congrats to those who have received IIs this week.

I am a bit sad. I feel as though it's time to officially give up on HUCM. I went to Howard for undergrad and really wanted to return back for my medical education but it seems as though it's only a pipedream at this point. 🙁
 
to whom do I send an update letter to? Can someone provide the email or is there a link I can upload it to on their secondary portal?
 
I have the update letter and it is attached to my email draft. But what would you write in the body of the email? Do I just repaste the entire letter? Or should I state somewhere along the lines of "please see attached update letter..."?

Apparently so. It didn’t happen to me, but I sent my email from a hospital computer so maybe that helped. Either way, like a few have said, you might want to call them as this seems to be happening often.

So when I sent them an update letter in December I just got an automatic reply that we are closed for holidays! Anyways I sent them my update letter again today just in case and then received a confirmation email that we have received your information!
