2019-2020 Howard

Did anybody go to First Friday after being accepted? Wondering if it’s worth the trip since there is no Second Look

Waitlisted as well, but hopefully we get off soon once people start finalizing their decisions! Do you know if there are two different lists? I know from last year's thread there may have been two.

When did you all hear back? I am still waiting for a response and I also interviewed late January.

I know! I’m sad too. Still waiting on an II. But that info came from a friend who interviewed there this month. I don’t think HU told folks that this was the case before the interview... and Idk it just seems wrong having folks pay to travel for an interview for a waitlist spot while thinking they have a shot.

I do think they should have said that but they also said they end up accepting 270-280 out of the 350 interviews so the odds are still really decent

Hmmm fair point. How many of those 270-280 are on the waitlist at first is my question. IF they already accepted 270-280 and are still interviewing then not sure how good of a shot new interviewees have. Recognizing I guess though that new interviewees who end up on the waitlist can be accepted through the summer.

Well hoping for the best either way. At least with an interview, you know that there is a chance!

The break down is they accept 120 outright and put 150 or so on WL. Then they pull from WL as traffic permits (PTE, CTE deadlines important). The director said they accepted about 1/2 of the WL last year.

I don’t even think they’ve interviewed 280 tbh and definitely not when I interviewed . An interview or waitlist spot here has higher positive odds than at most places.

What are PTE and CTE?

What are PTE and CTE?
Plan to Enroll and Commit to Enroll. Make sure to check the deadlines to each school you are accepted to. Not complying with these deadlines can forfeit your A. Here's the link from AAMC:

Thanks...does that show up an AAMC if you have a full acceptance?

It’s only for people with 2 or more acceptances, I think. Basically after the PTE and CTE deadlines pass, more seats are likely to open .

The PTE button on the Choose Your Medical School Tool opens up for anyone with 1 acceptance to a school which uses AMCAS

I have an interview March 24. Any last minute pointer for me? I didn't realize that interviews now are for the WL. Who in admissions did this info come from? How long do you all think it takes to hear back if placed on a waitlist?

Also....anyone know where to see a list of where folks are matching? From any previous years.... can't seem to find anything...

Enjoy it, relax, have some questions for the interviewers, KNOW YOUR APPLICATION forwards and backwards, and read sdn interviewer feedback!

As for the WL, they are very transparent and talk about it during interview day.

To those interviewing soon or those who just interviewed recently, I would not worry *too* much about the waitlist. She made it seem like a lot of the accepted students will be withdrawing their acceptance and they'll start sending out more acceptances soon. During my interview last week she said they'd send out like 50 more acceptances by the end of march. Since AMCAS has requested students to PTE, Howard now has an idea of how many students that they've accepted will actually enroll.

I also think during the open house I went to in December she said for the current first year class, most of the class is made up of students who were originally wait listed (if my memory serves me correctly). So please don't fret (yet LOL)

Being that I have been accepted, I am just trying to gain some insight into how Howard teaches their students and how effective it is with recent Step 1 scores. I know that there are other factors in success on the Step 1 exam, I just wanted to gain a glimpse of what their curriculum is like and its effectiveness so far. Just out of curiosity though.

I'd bet a Coke that Step 1 scores reflected a continuing trendline of individuals' past performance on standardized tests more than Howard's teaching.

Go to their second look or something. Congrats to you on your acceptance though. I have also been accepted to different schools and I don't get on their thread anymore being curious. All i'm trying to say is that many candidates might not be where they want to be at the moment and accepted people showing up being curios like you is not helping. I'm sure you can get that information going through older threads or something. Good luck mate!

With all due respect, I think there is nothing wrong with the question asked. I haven't received an interview from Howard, and am waiting to hear from them. Probably will be rejection at this point. However, the answer to questions like this really helps applicants who have multiple acceptances to choose the school that they think would help them the most during their journey. I agree with you that some of these questions can be asked during the interview or second look day if the school offers that. But sometimes people answer more honestly when their identity is anonymous. One reason we have threads like this. Also, questions like this really help applicants who are going to apply during the next cycle.
That being said, I truly appreciate your concerns for applicants like me. That is very nice of you. Congratulations on your acceptance. Wishing you all the best.

I'm sorry if I sounded disrespectful. I am glad you understood my point and good luck on your journey to medicine.

Not at all, I totally got your point. I just tried to explain another point of view. Thank you for the good wishes 🙂

For those of y'all who have been accepted and have sent your HUFAA (or whatever they call Howard's financial aid form), did you ever receive a reply back? I sent Howard's application like a week back and haven't heard since.

Also, for the FAFSA, you just have to add Howard to your list of schools right? I haven't received any emails from them outside of acceptance and financial aid stuff, so just wondering.

Give them a call to make sure they have received your email. I think sometimes our emails go in their spam folder.

Did you guys send update letters? If not, you should send (if you have significant updates to make, of course)

I am also in this same boat. Do yall think it would be worth it to send a letter of interest or something? If so, what do I even say? I don't have any other updates since I've submitted my application.

Nothing has really changed in my app tbh

What kind of work do you do? Maybe you could talk about your recent experiences and how they connect with the mission of the school?

I work as a phlebotomist at the hospital and have been doing it for years. Nothing has really changed since my app and yes I talked about it already in my essays....... 🙁
