2019-2020 Michigan State

I'm hoping someone can help me with this question:

When I called michigan state yesterday, they said I had until april 15th to select the "plan to enroll" option. But my second look day at another school i'm equally interested isn't until april 20th. This makes me a bit nervous. Any advice or confirmation of this?
You don't have to do anything before April 30th per AAMC guidelines. If you're holding more than 3 acceptances, you will have to narrow down to 3, but schools cannot force you to select "plan to enroll"///Please correct me if I am wrong

Michigan State requires you on April 15th to make a decision that's an MSU policy. Other medical schools may follow the April 30th but some, like MSU, have their own date. I'll try and find the actual link that says this in a sec

When you say make a decision I want to confirm you mean "plan to enroll"? and not commit

But medical schools CANNOT see who has clicked "plan to enroll" until after April 30th, so how can this be implemented? I also just went over the PDF included in the acceptance email, and I cannot find anything that says MSU requires "plan to enroll" by April 15th. I think you might have misunderstood something- I have also included the PDF from the acceptance letter. You can also read about it on the aamc website....google aamc traffic rules for applicants

Got my decision this morning and was actually referred to the ABLE program! Does anyone know anyone who went through this program before they went to the medical school?

I also got referred to the ABLE program. Did you gather any more information?

WL this morning. Can’t say I’m not extremely disappointed. Out of curiosity, did everyone’s WL email include: “Please know that the Committee on Admissions remains very interested in you as a potential student. As you know, some accepted applicants receive multiple medical school acceptances.”?

Yeah, mine did.

when you make your final decision, it's "commit to enroll." "Plan to enroll" option became available today; you don't have to select any schools. Medical schools cannot tell which individual has selected "plan to enroll." They only see the number of applicants who chose that option to help them decide how many more students they need to admit!

So it was my understanding that you had to select to plan to enroll and narrow it down to 3 schools. But after using the choose your medical school tool today I saw we can only select one school to choose plan to enroll. I thought I was like a checkbox system when you can choose max 3 where you plan to enroll until April 15th. Then would change to only 1 after April 30th. Apologies for the misunderstanding! I also remembered the April 15th date from my interview.

I thought the same, I think you guys helped me clear it up in my head though thanks

Current ABLE student here. Contact me if you have any questions (its an extra extra awesome program 😉)

R today, on hold for a while, complete late July. At least I can be happy knowing exactly what my remaining options are!

Does anyone know about campus placements? Someone said early assurance gets campus placements first but another person told me everyone finds out the same day?

I could be wrong, but I heard early assurance gets priority when picking where to go so you’re basically guaranteed the campus you want.

Congrats!! Are you able to post your stats?
I don’t want to go into specifics, because my stats were not competitive cause very low undergrad gpa from a top public undergrad. But I did a DIY post bacc and a MS degree so upward trend, and I worked a ton of hours along the way- I’m not exaggerating but close to 10,000 healthcare hours, lots of research hours with pub and more on the way, few hundred volunteer hours, and other miscellaneous ECs. Most of my 15 activities I put are post undergrad. I believe I have a very cohesive personal statement and overall app towards the underserved. I am also older so that’s how I spread out my commitments over several (5-10) gap years and worked multiple jobs at a time cause of financial need. Also comfortable with public speaking and believe I interviewed well and got my points across confidently. All this to say... stats are not the be all end all with certain schools! It’s been a very hard journey and I was told many times that I wasn’t cut out to be a doctor just cause of my grades. Sorry my answer is really not straight forward! Best of luck 🙂

I do not know anything for sure but it looks like its usually the Thursday and Friday right before Easter -- so this year it would be April 9 &10? Thats just going off the past few years.

Okay I also saw that from past information but I wasn't sure if anything had been officially released for this year. Thank you!!

does anyone have any idea as to when we will see alternate list movement?

Does anyone know if the earlier you submit your campus placement affects which campus you get or does that not matter?

Second look day April 3rd for EL only this year

Is there a Facebook page for class of 2024 yet?

Isn't the new curriculum centered around preparing students for Step 1? With the change to Step 1 being P/F, are there still benefits to it/will there be changes?
*disclaimer-my opinions and not those of the school*

the new curriculum is centered on preparing you to be the best possible Day 1 resident.
it is not ‘step centered’ at all although we cover most of what’s on step in the curriculum...
imho-this school is not for gunners, grade-motivated people... it’s for people who want to serve their community. Yes my class is as on edge as any other M2 class in the u.s about Step 1, but that’s our own doing—not the school. The P/F Step 1 integrates very nicely with our curriculum.

In my opinion also, yes step 2 CK will have more weight, but also what will be important is your ability to make connections and relationships with people. Doing away rotations, being on national committees, attending conferences, etc are all ways to make connections with residency programs. This has always been important, but you cant hide in the study lounge and get a 270 and expect to match anymore...

I would also encourage anyone coming to MSU to try to shadow as much as possible and explore specialties by listening to TUMS podcast before August because I think you’ll be at more of a disadvantage for choosing your specialty. A lot of my classmates seem to be waiting for the step 1 score before choosing a specialty. MSU has limited shadowing opportunities (none now because of covid-19)... and I think that you can join the right organizations and start forming the relationships with the right programs if you know what your goals are...

Do you think as an M2 the curriculum did prepare you for step?

Also how long do they give you for dedicated?

That is a loaded question my friend.

2nd Q: Theres a period of about 7-8 weeks that starts at the end of may to study for step. They want you to take it by the end of June, but will stretch it into July. Our year, if folks delayed it (which you needed a good reason for them to let you), we had to take it by July 25th or so or your 3rd year start would be delayed.

Well do you feel it prepared you since you’ve already taken it? Is there a penalty for extending ? I know some schools do that.

Is there somewhere we can find an academic calendar for the incoming year?

Anyone else waiting from January interview date about decision?
I noticed that they added 3/18 as a decision date (it wasn't there before) so they are probably running a little behind.

Does Michigan state offer any partial or full ride scholarships I know there's all those scholarships to apply for on the portal, but just asking.
🤔 🤔 🤔 🤔 I don't think so.

They cancelled Match Day and all classes until April 20th at CHM. Source: 3rd and 4th year students

Did anyone hear back from MSUCHM yesterday or today? Any post-interview results?

Also how long do they give you for dedicated?

it kind of depends. I’m starting first week of April and taking it first week of June so... 8 or 9 weeks. We are supposed to take it by June 23.

but the MCE ended two weeks ago so most of us are mostly studying for step right now... Not quite dedicated though until April. There is a 4-week step 1 prep class in April and then the whole mi TG of May is only for dedicated test prep. Hope that makes sense.

And yes—my classmates who followed the curriculum in a systematic and dedicated way were already scoring in the 70th percentile of their NBME by the end of 1st year. By the end of second year some are in the 90th before even starting dedicated.

the curriculum is highly relevant and correlated to the board exam, giving you tons of clinical experience to put a face with the things you’re studying.

It’s also flexible enough that you have time to pursue test prep resources like pathoma and board a&beyond throughout.

hope that answers your question (from my opinion.)
