2019-2020 NYU

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ok i know someone who got an ii here recently and just to put things into perspective. Their stats were 4.0, 526  So yeah! NYU median is going to be a little north of 525 next yr probbably

Similar stats, but still on hold... I think they can choose to pick applicants with both very high stats and great ECs.

Yes, NYU has alll the leverage this year.
Can compete for the same students that T5s would try to recruit

Compete and win IMO. Not many people would turn down NYU to pay sticker price at a "higher ranking" school. With more schools going debt free, I predict NYU's advantage will wane over time but for now, NYU is decidedly on top.

I disagree. Maybe some people will but I don’t think too many would turn down a Harvard acceptance for free tuition at NYU IMO

It's certainly possible. No way to really tell what will happen unless NYU and Harvard release their yield statistics for the past/current cycle.

Personally, I would choose NYU over a T5, and I may have inadvertently assumed others would do the same. But every person is different. Maybe someone should make a anonymous poll.

+1. In the grand scheme of things where you go to Med school is not important. Where you train is more important in getting jobs. And NYU is certainly reputable enough! Unless you are independently wealthy it seems an easy choice.

NYU has advantage primarily for students who would need to pay tuition elsewhere. For someone who has no money, Cornell or Columbia would be better since NYU might still need them to support themselves.

At the end of the day, it comes down to the premium people would pay for a shiny diploma. What is the worth of the Harvard name? Many would agree with you but I was shocked myself to see all the posts in the past (on sdn) of people comparing school acceptances. People DO turn down and legitimately grapple with the idea of going to a Hypsm Place vs a T10-20 that will give a full ride etc (some places do give out merit awards as well).
With private donations flooding the top tier institutions’ bank accounts, this cycle will be an interesting one for sure!

If you read the Help Me Decide X or Y forum, you’ll see that most ppl do suggest the free NYU over no scholarship Harvard.

Has anyone that has interviewed here have some tips? This is my first MMI (great, right?)? I’m also lower LM comparatively to people who’ve gotten an II so I’m already like intimidated by this school bc like wtf its NYU and I applied here as a yolo lmao
Don't stress out too much about it! It was my first as well! No matter where you have an MMI for be warned I am pretty sure there will always be one station designed to stress you out. Just trust yourself and your decision making skills! Also, there is still one traditional style interview in the midst of the stations. Honestly when it comes to the actual MMI stations, I felt like trying to practice for them won't help too much, other than knowing how to rationally go through the process by which you made a decision. And remember to take into account all sides.

I have NYU as my first MMI in a few days! I was wondering if we were able to write notes after seeing the MMI prompt? I've been practicing using a notepad.

I personally would choose a school like Stanford over NYU, because full cost at Stanford is like the same cost as having a two bedroom apartment in New York City. So, it’s all perspective

Stanford is the original god tier school lol

You can write notes

I read that NYU sends secondaries to all applicants. How long does this typically take? I've received secondaries or Rs to every other school I've applied (save one), but nothing from NYU.

+1 for the hold the other day

here is my take for everybody bugging out: the significance of this is somewhere between little and nothing. For one, it's SO early still. Secondly, I see a bunch of ppl on here posting about getting put on hold who have interviews at essentially all of the other "top 20" schools (many of whom with multiple II's at said schools). Always remember, SDN is a highly biased sample- non-representative. These are some "top" applicants to be sure. I predict many of them (us) will eventually get interviews at NYU, and that this hold is just a feature of their likely-overloaded admissions process this cycle. tbd if that ends up being true! If not, lot of folks on here are in a pretty good place regardless 😉

Sounds good to me

I personally am not getting my hopes up too high for NYU - and that’s ok! Different schools prioritize different things, even within the “top 20.” This week I got hard rejected by a couple “top 20s” but I also have a few interviews under my belt to some “top 20s.” A hold is not a good sign, but there are other schools. Good luck, everyone!

that's an awesome/the right attitude! I always appreciate your grounded and positive perspective out here my friend. I hope I end up where you do!

Is there any reason I wouldn't receive a secondary from NYU? It's been about two weeks since I submitted my primary. I received and returned all the other secondaries I was expecting, but while I received NYU Long Island, nothing from NYU showed up.
Hi! Please email your issue to [email protected], and they should be able to help you out

Wow now I feel like an actual dick. Sorry @Ferrari1234. So are we assuming this whole hold business was just a formality?

haha you're good! Yep, I think we should treat it as a formality and that everyone whose application has been looked at got the hold. I'm guessing if anyone has gotten no hold, II, or R, it probably means they genuinely haven't reviewed you yet.

Edit: thought this was pitt. Still on hold

Well this makes me feel worse about getting hold and NOT an II today.

Congrats all who got one though!

Did anybody who interviewed here recall them stating at the interview how many they are interviewing this year or anything about their yield?

No idea about interviewing. I'd assume they keep the same #'s at around ~1000. They said at mine that they would accept ~100-110, and then ~50 would be pulled off the waitlist sometime in the spring.
