2019-2020 NYU

Yeah, you're right, but that's what happens when a T10 school doesn't charge tuition. Are you considering making a stand by withdrawing your application? If not, then the way they are treating people isn't going to hurt them at all!

I will definitely let them know that the way they handle all the news and how they come across to others is actually not top-tier school warranted. I will definitely not attend the school.

The current 60 minutes segment they are referring to just aired on sept 4.

Fine, whenever it is aired. A top school like that can easily redirect media mail to other channels. Mind you, it's their admissions email address. Do you think media requests go there?

I feel like NYU has a low self esteem issue. Like they’re trying sooo hard to be up there with harvard and Hopkins but will never be there.

I mean, instead of coming to the school specific thread to b***h about a school you’ve already said you won’t be attending, just withdraw your app and redirect your energy elsewhere, no? I got rejected from here as well last year but I just let it go like a normal person.

Why should I withdraw? Are they gonna refund me my application fee?? That's ridiculous.

There are lots of med students that still lurk on the premed forums? Idk the drama is fun

Yep

I am not proud of how much TV I watch, but I can assure you that the airing on Sept. 4 was a rerun, since the TV season runs from the end of September (the current season just started this past week) through around the week before Memorial Day in May. I know I first saw that segment sometime in the Winter or Spring, although I don't remember when. (I just looked it up, and it was April 7th! 🙂)

Either way, it doesn't matter whether it was 6 months ago or yesterday. The point is that it is huge news, and this is the very first cycle where it was widely known from the first day of the cycle, so their application numbers are certain to spike this year, which has to be putting their staff under a lot of stress.

Bottom line, very few people are going to forgo even a slim to none chance to go to a T10 med school tuition-free because the staff is difficult to reach or arrogant, e-mails are impersonal, etc. Anyone who is that sensitive or has so many better options probably should not waste time and money applying because it is what it is.

It wasn't exactly a rerun... it was a followup. They replayed parts of the original story with updates showing the impacts that the changes had so far. Easy to find on google if interested in watching it.
Agree with your comments though! And FWIW, I had to contact the admissions office, I identified myself as a current applicant like they suggested, got a response within 30 mins and the woman I spoke to could not have been nicer or more helpful. Much nicer than Chicago and ¥ale who were completely snooty. So we each are entitled to our own perspectives!

Yup, so-called "follow-ups" are how 60 Minutes packages reruns, since they claim every edition is new. I am glad you are having a better experience with NYU than some others here, but my point was not to argue perceptions of alleged shoddy treatment, it was to suggest that, even if that were the case, most applicants wouldn't mind for the opportunity to attend a T10 tuition-free, and that there are lots of other options for those who find it unacceptable! 🙂

I personally would cut them all the slack in the world given how slammed they must be this year, and how their approach to medical school tuition is hopefully going to revolutionize how medical education is financed for lots of us in the near future.

I’m disappointed in the Pitt thread. Not a single person even pointed out that they’re not as highly ranked as Harvard.

Haha the Pitt thread is one of my favs along with the Lookism and the “60 pubs/Harvard” threads

They did but it got deleted. Lol. One user said the Pitt students were “Harvard sloppy seconds” or something like that.
As someone who has been to both (facts-ing, not flexing), I will say that Pittsburgh is a better area and has better clinical opportunities, Harvard has a better preclinical curriculum and a better name....But both basically have all of the resources you could ever want and comparable Step scores and Match lists....so...like....yah, name at this level means Jack and I thought Pitt was better than Harvard. Both student populations seemed equally happy/destressed and equally accomplished/prepared.

Pitt has pretty low step scores I thought

I gotta say, I just LOVE how the pitt debate was so powerful and chaotic that it has possessed the thread of a completely different school after being exorcised from its original host, the pitt forum. In fact, this cursed energy is one of the big selling points of pitt for me, for any school that I attend must bear a foul and chaotic spirit which leaves destruction and terror in its wake. In this essay, I will be

So a chaotic thought popped into my head: since everyone and their cousin is trying to get into NYU does that mean that there’s a bigger dif between interviewing in sept vs interviewing in october? I’m wondering considering that oct 15th deadline set by the AAMC. I chose an oct date so i’d be able to get another MMI in first but maybe that wasn’t wise lol. I’m obviously like a lot of people, one to think worst case first so i only ask that if you’re going to drag me, do it with a meme

II date matters more than actual interview date. They sent yours early = they like you more. You will be fine. I mean, it is a 15% post-II rate, so the odds are against everyone....but you will be fine.

also don’t worry about the Oct 15 date. At the interview, they said they plan on releasing very few acceptances around that time. They said the vast majority of people who have interviewed by then will just receive some sort of hold notification (ie we’re not ready to accept or reject yet, but will keep considering your app)

Also, I just want to highlight how big of a bubble we are in when 516 is considered "lower stats".....I benefit from the community brought about by this bubble, but damn do I hate the bubble's existence.
Could not agree with you more and thank you for saying that! I meant only to demonstrate that stats like mine are still considered by a school like NYU, which has a reputation for stats focus and a very high median. That being said, there has been many a time that I’ve felt less worthy because of this bubble and that insecurity can be a hard thing to combat. It’s tough when an LM 73 feels inadequate and I know there are many others (both vocal and silent) who feel similarly downtrodden at times. But I’ve also found a space to celebrate success too and with my 4 interviews thus far I’ve begun to remember that these numbers are such a reduction of our whole story and each of us on this site brings so much to the table outside of them.

Just in case anybody else needs to hear this: it is a feat in and of itself to have done what we have to even be able to apply at all and we should all be proud of our individual accomplishments regardless of the numbers they carry

Me: *locks phone after reading thread. Swills cheap white wine from Burger King cup filled with ice, smoking last Marlboro red from the 3rd pack of the day, 2 hours into staring blankly into the flame of a candle lit in a fireplace.*

“Life in the Big City,” I say in an inappropriately loud voice, making my dog jump out of its sleep and growl at the brown Christmas tree from last year.

Interesting take. I actually appreciated the auto-email. I looked again at my question and decided it was very important to be answered and could not be answered through any FAQ, etc. So, I emailed them back with my AMCAS ID and “Current cycle” in the subject line. Within a few hours, I had a personal response that included a note that the question was both important, valid, and took some looking in to. That was followed with the answer, so, I thought it was handled pretty smoothly.

I was complete on July 9th and heard September 23rd (I was late in making an account here)
Congrats on your rise to prominence, bruddah. Sorry about the holds/Rs, congrats on all the interviews. Would suggest contacting the mods to find out how to change your name away from your real name (But if you stick around long enough and don't shut up, you will eventually not care about doxxing yourself anyway...)
