If it helps at all, I had 0 expected family contribution and NYU was the only top 10 school I got into last year. They also helped me with the cost of living due to my finances. You are trying to come up with a formula to define all 102 of us, but the truth is my classmates are as diverse as any other group. Rich people, not-so-rich people, some fresh-out-of-college kids, some older people with kids. All with different life stories and aspirations too, if you could believe that lol.

Maybe I am wrong and cynical but I still think there are plenty of people who chose NYU for the money who wouldn’t have even considered it before free tuition.

It’s relevant because someone said if I wanted a lambo I should have gone into banking. Therefore, I responded by saying that I didn’t care for a lambo, because if I did, I could have went into banking pretty easily.

And some of us applied bc we just liked the school and the idea of free tuition lowered a barrier. But why is that even bad? There are a million reasons why a school can pop up on someone’s radar. I applied to a school bc my 15 year old sister is looking there for college and it would be cool to end up in the same place.

I dont think we as people who have never gone to NYU can make a generalization like that.

Does it actually matter, though? Many people don't end up at their first choice school, but still become doctors.

“Doing it for money” is like saying you get 200k for going to NYU. But in reality, it just means you don’t have to spend 10 years paying off loans. That doesn’t mean you are money hungry. That means you can make a smart financial decision that is in your best interest. Everyone who ends up there believes it’s the best school for them. Who says true happiness is going to a prestigious IVY league school?

I just don't think major life decisions like this should be based off money. That just leads to people being unhappy with their situations. Im not saying people cant be thrilled about the school itself but when the MAIN reason someone is attending a school is money and it is not an insignificant portion of the class, you cant say that dosent affect the atmosphere. Look, I get it. Paying off loans after med school is annoying. I am paying off my undergrad loans and having money taken from my account every month. I still dont think people should make major decisions like this for what amounts to less than 1% of total lifetime earnings. You guys can do what you want but I am entitled to my opinion.

Also, It’s not like NYU was a lowly undesirable school before. It’s a good school with an affiliated hospital in one of the most popular cities in the country. Yes the free tuition has undoubtably bumped it up on peoples’ list, but it is probably from “good” to “top”.
Anyways, we should probably let the good applicants to NYU who actually want to go there be at peace and anxiously await information like the rest of the school threads.

Look NYU is a great school in itself. When you get down to brass tacks of it, especially once you are already making choices at these top schools. There should be NOTHING wrong with choosing X school over Y school because it is free (all other things outside rank being equal), even if X is No. 20 and Y is No. 3 etc. Med school is expensive and hard. Not having to worry about 200k loans at the end of this is a big deal.

Again, people on here are acting almost liek NYU isn't a great school. Sure it might not be *Harvard* but really, are we going to be THAT pedantic about No.1 vs No. 9????

Unless money is not an issue, then literally EVERY SINGLE major life decision you make will be based on money. Every single one without exception. Live a life in the real world outside of academia and you will see this.

It’s all about perspectives, folks. There isn’t one absolute answer to live your life. I have my own opinions that are different from his/her, but I shouldn’t force him/her to live by what I think.

Yeah like lemme be transparent here: I think NYC is the greatest city on earth and 40% of why I applied was bc of that. A bigger portion was bc as someone who was raised in debt, the idea of digging myself out of an excessive financial hole gives me full anxiety. I’m happy the culture ended up being what I want out of a program (so yeah sorry adcoms i will still be there breathing heavily over ur shoulder until u hit me a decision).

When you graduate with a 3.9+ GPA from a top ten with a pipeline to banking jobs, I say with 100 percent confidence, I could've went to goldman if I wanted to. I had friends with 3.5 GPAs going to JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley.

I understand what you’re saying. Of course you should go to a school that is the perfect fit for you, including financial cost, city, atmosphere, curriculum, etc. And I get that it could be unattractive to you if it seems like the common factor in the student body is that they’re only there because it’s free.
But I don’t think a lot of people pass up on ivies and prestigious schools even if they get NYU free tuition. And if they do, it’s because their happiness includes no loans- or they like any other aspect of the school. But at the end of the day, you can’t really blame someone if they truly need that free tuition. I don’t think the atmosphere would be filled with greed or have any negative vibe. If anything, it would be filled with people who have made hard decisions and sacrifices in trying to plan a better future. Everyone has their priorities ya know. No matter what the reasons, they chose where they see themselves thriving.

This is a perfect response. I understand completely why someone would chose it even if I might not. Maybe I am wrong and their is no negative vibe because of that. But for some reason, I think there probably is. When I asked people at my interview day, the first answer out of everyone's mouth was free tuition. At other schools, I heard the student body is great, location is awesome, ability to work with disadvantaged populations all that jazz. But here it was like strictly about the money which was off putting. Something like "Yes yes I get that its free tuition but what else"?

Bruh....you are a high stats, first gen, URM....I am sure you have success in your life and a decently interesting app, but don't act like you are God's gift to man when you are benefiting directly from the system in place.

I am not gods gift to medicine. Still, when people make comments like that, it shows they have no idea what they are talking about. Also, why is a med student on the pre med forums on the NYU page? Shouldnt they be studying or something

I will watch the movie on my flight tomorrow to my next interview. I am the most humble person you could ever meet in person. But when I am told "thats the attitude that nets you 23 II's and no A's, I gotta bring out the big guns🙂"

Im not against NYU whatsoever. On the contrary, I am an applicant that is highly interested in the school hence me wanting to inquire more about the atmosphere and how free tuition plays into it. If I wasn't interested, I wouldnt even have applied
