2019-2020 University of Washington

Got that fat R just now... OOR applicant but have strong ties to Washington (literally my entire family but me is from there). Never had the chance to explain to them given all they sent me was a mission statement essay to write :/
Were you born here, raised here, or have any proof of familial connection? You can email the ADCOM email and ask for the chance to siubmit a residency verification packet.

It’s super fun! But worth it if you get reconsidered.

Took me about 14 hours and more than 50 pages. And I have lived here my whole life aside from a few military stints.
Def the most effort I have put into anything this cycle. I now know I am a Washingtonian.

Submitted my mission statement 8/2 and haven't heard anything back. Is it worth an email?

Last year interview invites started coming out this week, seem likely to you guys? I'm not expecting it given the technical difficulties early on this cycle, but I know a few of y'all got around those.

It seems this year is at least a full week behind, probably a couple weeks, so it may be yet a while until anyone hears anything.

What docs did they need?
Clarifying docs specific to my situation. There was a question regarding how much I paid for tuition during one semester in 2017 (random), so I needed to submit a doc for that. A couple of things regarding an address on one tax document, etc. stupid stuff.

That is stupid...Now here I am trying to remember if I sent them my ‘tuition paid’ documents?

I left out quite a few documents that, to be blunt, were meaningless in determining if I was a Washington resident. At some point, logic has to come into play.

“30+ years in state. In-state homeownership and primary residence the last ten years. Hmmmm.... better ask for proof on how much they paid in tuition.”

Uh.... no?
Oh but you lived out of state x years ago for military stuff? Yah, you don’t belong round these parts.

When did you submit your initial packet? I think I sent mine last Monday and got the “we received it” email on...Thursday?

I wouldn't worry about it. I attended university out of state and took 9 years to complete my undergrad (spent 3 years abroad for volunteer service after freshman year and then changed my major 4 times). So they had some questions for me. I'm sure you guys are just fine. I've kept all of my docs in Washington state (drivers license, voter registration, vehicle registration, bank account, everything.)

OOR rejection pre-secondary, first one of the cycle whoop! Mission statement submitted 8/1
Also just received OOR rejection pre-secondary (and 1st one of cycle too lol). Submitted my mission statement 8/1.
I wasn't expecting much from UW since i'm OOR but good luck to everyone else!! 🙂

Anyone know if selecting I am open to either for seattle vs. spokane as a WA resident makes a difference on chances. I am more interested in Seattle, because my experiences align with urban underserved, but UW is my top choice and I would still love to go to spokane over not going to UW at all, but would prefer Seattle. Should I select I prefer Seattle or I am open to either? I know it seems trivial, but it says they interview 100 students for spokane for 60 spots, and there are 400 that interview for Seattle.

I've heard they prefer applicants to be "honest". Basically, if you are a better fit for Seattle (not a lot of rural interest/experience) just put Seattle because they won't consider you for Spokane anyway. It looks better if you're upfront and aware of where you fit in, rather than looking desperate. It gives the rest of your statements more weight if you apply where you fit the mission. (Of course we would all go anywhere, but this is what I've heard from a very reliable source.)

What if you don't have a preference and put down that option in the application?

I wouldn’t read too much in it, nor would I waste time thinking putting “No Preference” impacts your candidacy significantly. If you truly have no preference, then put that.

What SeaHusky said. The option exists for a reason and some people might be a good fit for both programs, but if you are only doing it to better your chances and you aren't a good fit for one of the campuses, it could raise an eyebrow.

I am the same. I could justify Spokane for the COL and support network, I could justify Seattle for the better area and more opportunities. I check marked either and just let the fates decide. As a full life Spokanite with a child, they will likely assign me Spokane.

Same here. I'd be perfectly happy with both options 🙂.

Regarding interview location assignment, I believe they might do it based on space availability? But I'm not sure, and we'll find out probably within a month.

I believe that if you marked a specific site they interview you there, but if you are either-or then they will do Space available and interview location is supposed to not have an impact on where you are assigned. I think.

Oh, that's interesting. Do you think initially marking Seattle or Spokane has some sort of an impact on your interview, opposed to marking either location.

I know I asked this at EWUs MED student panel last year...but I do not remember. Sorry! I have a hunch that it might even if the say it doesn’t...

Has anyone actually had their residency packet approved yet?

It's ok! I'm just curious because it seems like the Spokane campus is catered towards students who have experience in rural medicine. Since I don't have experience/shadowing whatsoever, I'm wondering how they'll assess my application or interview. But we'll see how things work out!

You def can expect rural medicine experience while at Spokane Campus, so that would be interesting to know. My rural experience is limited to a week of shadowing in Montana...so...we’ll see!

Do the people in Seattle and Spokane have the option of doing rotations throughout the WWAMI region or are they confined to Washington? I know the reverse is true. The WAMI states can do rotations in Washington, but not sure exactly how that pans out.

I'm pretty sure that students in Seattle and Spokane have the option of doing rotations throughout all the WWAMi region.

The Seattle Campus requires you do at least 6 months outside of Seattle across WWAMI and the Spokane Campus requires you do at least 6 months in Seattle with the rest across WWAMI.

UW is awesome in that there are like 300+ possible clinical rotations with only a few dozen being ‘selective.’ Unless you wanna be in Anchorage for their dope rotations or Jacksonhole or whatever....You can do almost all of your rotations across the realm, or you can do almost all of them within a 50 mile radius of Seattle. It really is an individually driven process.

This can potentially suck for students with non-mobile families, however. On that note, if you have a stay at home spouse or they have an at-home job and the kids are too young for school, doing home schooling, or you just want to move for the summer then UW will pay for your family to move and housing at many clinical sites.

Submitted my mission statement on 8/4 and still haven't heard back for better...or for worse 🙁

I did not realize they actually pay for the move and housing!

My partner would definitely be up for that. He is constantly talking about "buying a van and living down by the river".
Just be aware, they specifically title it as "Family consists of Spouse and Children" so you will need to be married if you are not.

This is not true. Sorry, but the requirement is either 8 or 12 weeks outside of Seattle. -current student
