Good luck everyone!

What date did you submit the mission statement?

What is the difference? I am from Michigan!

For UW purposes:
Out of State = not a resident of Washington State
Out of Region = not a resident of WWAMI (Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, Idaho)

UW has a very strong in-region preference; less than 1% of matriculated students come from outside the WWAMI region. The OOS thing can trip people up, because I believe MSAR counts Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Alaska as "out of state", making it look like it's much easier to gain acceptance from OOS/OOR than it truly is.

As a Michigander, you're definitely OOR. Based on previous years' UW threads, it seems normal for OOR applicants to not receive a secondary or mission verification. It's incredibly hard to receive an acceptance from UW if you're out of region. I of course hope it works out for you, but don't hold your breath for this one unless you meet UW's mission for OOR candidates (underserved background and extensive service to underserved communities).

Best of luck with the rest of your cycle!

received the mission statement request on 7/30 and submitted same day

Ah so sorry 🙁 i submitted 7/31 and this makes me nervous. Do you identify as disadvantaged and have extensive service to underserved communities, one or the other?

thanks :/ its okay though I had low expectations for UW
I wrote about both groups: first-generation + low-income & founded + currently manage a nonprofit that works with medically/mentally ill low-income
I am a Business Admin major though so maybe take my rejection with a grain of salt?

Fingers crossed for you ~ hoping for good news from you soon!

Awesome! Do you guys need to submit residency verification packets?
Nope. Lived in, and have been a resident of, Washington state all my life. Just had to fill out the standard residency form that everyone had to fill out initially before receiving a secondary.

For the residency packet/parental letter, do y’all think this will suffice?

To whom it may concern;

This letter is in regards to Memelord’s dependency.

We did not claim him on our 2018 taxes, and are not going to claim him on our 2019 taxes.

Looks good to me. Simple and concise. Do they both have to physically sign it and scan it back to you before you can submit?

Just make sure they capitalize Lord.

jk I haven't seen the packet so have no idea what UW is asking for besides everything under the sun.

I'm sure that will suffice. Mine was very similar to that. Also, I contacted the office and they said a scanned copy of the notarized letter is fine if you don't live near your parents. Mine just scanned and emailed it to me.

Thankfully my parents are just 20 minutes away so that works

No email yet, but my portal is now showing as complete (including CASPer!)

I lied, the email did in fact come through. 🙂
Ya my CASPer is showing up, but i still cant submit due to the damn CUSP page still being marked as incomplete despite me marking the "not interested"

Ohh, so that’s still not working, bummer.

You can choose to wait and see if they fix it, or check boxes ABC on that page and write an explanation in one of the fields that you do NOT meet the criteria, you’re working around the portal bug - that’s what some of us did, I don’t know if that’s the best option though!

anyone know how many MSTP secondaries make it through screening?

I noticed that the University of Washington has already issued interview requests for people who submitted their apps through July 31st. If we didn't receive an II or a hold, should we assume we have been rejected? My application portal still says under committee review.

No, way too early. Uw has hardly sent out any IIs, and I think maybe only to MSTP applicants so far. I'm a reapplicant, and last year I got an II from them in October, so dont worry, there's plenty of time.

To clarify, I am an MSTP applicant. Can any MSTP applicant (past or present) comment on not having any feedback from the secondary application yet? I know some portals say something about getting a letter in the mail but mine still indicates I am under review.

Rec'd secondary! Submitted residency verification (just the regular form, no follow up packet) on 8/6. Ready to get 'er done!

As part of the email:

"**Please note that we are having technical difficulties with our secondary application, which is why we have been slow to send it out. Currently there is an issue with the CUSP portion of the secondary (which is optional), but you are welcome to work on the rest of the essays now."

Has anyone OOR heard anything after the mission statement request?

Looks like one person got a post mission R. I submitted my mission statement on 07/31 and I haven't heard back yet.

I am 90% done with my essays for this, but still struggling with the first question. I just don't like what I'm writing. How are you guys writing about yourselves? Stories from your life? Characteristics about yourself? Plain old (short-ass) autobiography?

To be clear, I'm addressing this part: "let the Admissions Committee know more about who you are in addition to being someone who wants to be a physician."

I really hope they fix that by tomorrow, I don't want to submit using the workarounds, I feel like that could cause issues.

Submitted with the workarounds about 2 hours before the "hold tight" email went out. No ragrets.

Def need to finish up that residency packet though...I just...I just don't wanna go buy stamps.

You are just under review. After review, they immediately tell you II, hold, or reject. Aka they haven’t looked at you yet

Just for everyone's peace of mind (including my own), I'm planning on emailing the admissions office tomorrow morning and asking if our workarounds are okay. I'm 99.99% sure they are and adcoms won't give a ****, but knowing how increasingly neurotic we all will become in the coming months, I'll take one for the team. 😉

Thanks so much! I appreciate it. This process is making me kind of crazy haha. Do they not review applicants in general in chronological order of when they submitted? I think my angst comes from seeing people who submitted with me/after me getting responses (either IIs or Rs) while I hear nothing.

The hero we needed!

You the real MVP
BTW, I ever mention how much I appreciate the everchanging Elmo avatar. Gold

Alright you lovable, impatient, neurotic people. Here’s UW’s official response:

Thank you for your email to the University of Washington School of Medicine. Yes, those responses are fine. Ideally the system would have been working properly, but I know a lot of applicants did the same thing as you and it should not confuse the Admissions Committee.

SCREW IT IM DOING IT!

Thanks SeaHusky, truly a legend. Is UW heavily influenced by how early you submit in the cycle?

Absolutely not. UW is one of the few schools who truly sticks to the “rolling admissions” philosophy. I have a mentor on the adcom, and they’ve always emphasized this.

For peace of mind then I may weight... not sure, I'm so bloody neurotic but I do want an earlier interview than later and just get this all over with haha.

There are a lot of factors that affect the order (URM, stats, connections, etc). There is absolutely nothing to worry about, UW seems to have good turn around and I suspect that they will get to you soon!
