2019-2020 UT Medical Branch

I agree, if there is something that I learn about this cycle so far, is that I am thankful for the opportunities to be considered. There are so many qualified candidates that I have seen during my interviews, and I realize that they deserve as much, if not more, the chance to be accepted and to start their dream as well. Regardless, wish everyone great health to cope with the stress of this cycle !

Prepping for an interview! Anyone know how to dress for the social?

Social is very chill and has no bearing on your interview. The med students wore t shirt and jeans. A couple of people did as well. Some ppl came business casual but it’s completely up to you how dressed up you want to come.

Has anyone else still not received the complete email? My primary was transmitted at the end of August. I'm bummed because I love this school and my chances keep going down because I'm not under review yet.

Submitting your primary at the end of August seems like an afterthought - any reason you delayed?

Working 45 hours a week, doing an MBA, bought my first house in May, continuing to volunteer, finished AACOMAS app first b/c I'll have a better shot there. I wanted to get it submitted earlier, but I just didn't have the time.

Regardless, 5.5 weeks is a long time to process a primary app.

I was transmitted at the end of June and still have not received a complete email. I am OOS.

TMDSAS processing time by the end of August was on the order of 2-3 days, so your app was sent to Texas schools back then. If you would like to check with UTMB to see if your application is now complete, a polite 1-sentence email will do the trick.

Reapplicant here. I interviewed at UTMB last year and was waitlisted. I was really hoping for another chance from here!

I didn't receive the complete email, but the director of admissions emailed me back and said my application is under review. Could be the same situation for you?

That happened to me as well. I don’t take it as a good sign considering I was complete end of June with no interview. IS.

Yes, I was complete 6/12. Nothing from UTMB

I was completed 6/10. Also nothing from UTMB. URM. GPA 4.0 and MCAT 516. Any suggestions or explanations?
Maybe they’re looking for a particular aspect in which your application lacks? There might be a mission mismatch. Who knows? I wouldn’t lose all hope; I’d say there’s maybe a month and some change left for IIs.

Hey guys, interviewing this week and had a question from someone who has earlier. So i know it says 2 interviews by faculty.

So were the 2 interviews different? Obviously they don't know what one another ask unless there is a long break between the two so I was wondering if one interview focused on application/behavioral and the other more technical/ethical or did you find overlap between the two interviews?

just 2 different interviews. Just be yourself, practice an hour and don't overthink it.

I had two faculty interviews, one MD one PhD (not sure if this is the same amongst all interviewees), in completely different departments. Each had a rubric and were taking notes a little but it was mainly a conversation. I would say it is a mix of both factors to answer your last question, and yes there was a slight overlap, just based on the topics we discussed about my application, not so much overlap about the "typical" interview questions. It also depends on who you interview with. Some fellow interviewees were had a subjectively more difficult interview, as they were asked more pressing questions about why medicine and some aspects about medicine. It is a very relaxed interview, so know yourself, know where you stand on things, and enjoy being at UTMB.

What do you mean by technical/ethical?

Both were very conversational and about 30 mins apart for me. I don't think they had any sort of communication with each other.

@wysdoc - at my interview here, my interviewer made it very clear that she knew what other TMDSAS schools I’ve interviewed at and referred to them both by name before telling me to consider UTMB.

I thought TMDSAS didn’t let other schools’ adcoms know who is interviewing where, so that kind of threw me off. Are they supposed to have that information?

That's really interesting because one of my interviewers thought I was a great candidate and that I had multiple interviews lined up. He told me to highly consider their school and funnily enough, that was the only interview I had received.

I guess he got his short term memory of facts mixed up! As long as he remembers the part where he said you are a great candidate!!

opinions on asking semi-controversial questions at the end of the interview regarding issues in medicine.

Think NP/PA issues, pharmacist prescribing, single payer, etc. Should I avoid it all together?

Depends on your interviewer. The topic was brought up and I spoke about how I felt regarding the topic. I personally wouldn't have brought it up myself but since it was asked, I contributed and expanded on the topic even. I would ask more personal and relevant questions to the interviewer, like, "How long have you been here? Do you like Galveston? What exactly do you do (research, clinical, etc)?" Show that you can listen to them speak as well.

Unless you genuinely feel passionate about political policy in medicine, have a stance that is fleshed out, and depending on your interviewer, then maybe, but I think there are better questions that would contribute more to the reviewer's comments about you. Sure it is nice to know where faculty stand on certain things but having a conversation about their career and experience at UTMB might be more beneficial.

that makes sense, thanks for the response!!

Has anyone stayed at AMWA student host housing at UTMB? Did you get to sleep in a room or a couch? How was your experience?

I would suspect different people will have different accommodations and it will not be uniform irrespective of the feedback you get here about room vs couch.

Varies from med student to med student and where they lived. You could get your own bed/room or sleep on an inflatable mattress. I didn’t really mind bc it was $20 but if you want assured comfort and have the means then you could also get a hotel.

I've hosted, it can be a room or a couch, depending if the person has a guest bedroom. More likely a couch.
