2019-2020 UT Southwestern

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
@mtrotchie

During my interview, every guy, except for one, had a full suit on during rounds. During the afternoon session, every guy, except for the handful that didn’t attend the rounds, had a full suit on.

You really aren’t given time to go back to your car. You go to lunch after the rounds. From there, you are guided to the north campus for the afternoon session, which includes boarding a shuttle. You could go back to your car at that time , but then you’ll have to find out how to get to the north campus on your own, then look for the building, then figure where the auditorium everyone is already in.

Thank you for the response!

For clinical rounds, is it necessary for women to wear a blazer? I know its recommended for men, but it says nothing about it for women.

Any idea when the next wave of pre-matches are coming in? Interviewed 10/26.
Also interviewed 10/26. 2 top choices, UTSW and Baylor. Interviewed both , now hoping to get accepted to at least one.

Does anyone know if UTSW is done sending out IIs?

Sent them a letter of interest + update this past week and still waiting since July 31st 🙁

Is the registration button not working for the HIPAA training for anyone else? Can't tell if it's a computer issue or what.

UTMB started showing up on the ranking list for a lot of people two weeks ago, and a few days later they received a prematch email! Definitely a good sign!

I thought they showed up on the Pre-match offer withdrawal page...doesn't every school you interview at show up on the ranking list regardless?

This is correct. There are 2 separate lists and all schools SHOULD show up for ranking. Withdraw list contains those who admitted you which is what suddenly showed up for UTMB interviews before they were notified of admission.

UTSW showed up on my TMDSAS school ranking list one day after interviewing yesterday.... positive sign or just arbitrary?
UTSW showed up on my rank list an hour after I interviewed so hoping its good news. I'm not sure how the rankings show up on our list since it varies for each person but I feel like its arbitrary. UTMB showed up on peoples prematch withdrawal so that's a different situation.

Sorry, this is correct. I misread and assumed we were discussing offer withdrawals page, not the rank list. Sorry!

Yea haha I made the same damn mistake, and deleted my earlier comment to avoid confusion...i feel dumb...maybe its why UTSW hasn't given me the A yet 😛

Do yall know how many prematch waves they have sent out? / when the next one is coming?

I hear they do one mid December, I checked last years UTSW admission page awhile back and you could kinda see when they did it based on when people got their prematches last year

does UTSW accept post-II updateS?

I am also curious if someone knows. I will try emailing them today and calling tomorrow. I have a publication update and am hoping it'll pull me through. Kind of worried that I interviewed on the 1st date and no news so far...

I’m and URM and I just got a follow-up email from the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion. They just talked a lot about their available programs to promote inclusion and asked me to reach out if I had any questions or concerns with a personal phone number.

Did any one else get this? Is it a positive sign to receive this or it sent to every URM. I interviewed on 10/26 btw.

I am URM as well and interviewed on the same date. I received this email but I don’t know what to make of it.

Hey were any of the recent acceptances from out of state? Also, did anyone who got accepted interview after the start of November?

OOS applicant here - very very happy to say that I was also accepted on Wednesday!! Interviewed on 10/26, LizzyM score 71, non-trad with a master’s degree. I absolutely LOVED my interview at this school! They also offered me in-state tuition and a minimum of 1k/year merit-based scholarships!

Congratulations! The 1k/year is what gives you instate tuition per Texas law. Anyone receiving a scholarship of that amount is required to pay only instate at Texas colleges.

Thanks! I didn’t realize that but I’m happy either way! The less money I have to pay, the better☺️

Right. What they gave you is a scholarship equivalent to the difference between instate and out of state + 1k.

Based on the second link, your scholarship value is 19650 + 1000 or 20,650.

Hey y’all. Current 4th year at UTSW. Let me know if you have any burning questions about UTSW. I’ll be sure to give you the honest truth. Actually took a gap year so I’ve been here for 5 years and know almost everything about everything from word of mouth between my peers and talking to faculty and deans. ask away or DM me! I’ll try and repost any questions asked that I think will help you guys out. Hope interview season is going well!

Is a gap year common at UTSW and if so for what reason?

Thanks for taking the time to help us out! Is there anything you'd recommend that we do now or things you wish you did before you started at UTSW?

Enjoy your free time, travel, get married lol i do wish I truly grasped the time commitment that medical school requires. Truly is a sacrifice and you can easily get lost in all the knowledge you’re required to know, step scores research etc and forget that you’re doing all this for your patients and your community. There will be golden weekends and breaks (UTSW gets two weeks of spring break every year which most schools don’t get any) but yea come in refreshed and ready to learn!

Is a gap year common at UTSW and if so for what reason?
Yes but mainly for people who are applying to competitive specialties. I know people who took gap years who were at the top of our class for dermatology and plastics just cause it’s just becoming more and more competitive every year to match as more applicants apply. But to each their own. Utsw attracts a very competitive cohort that you won’t feel during your first or second year but reveals it self during clinicals and beyond. Its personally been a privilege to be around such a high achieving group of people but it can get annoying and intimidating at times.

It seems like a lot of people are prematching, does anyone know the percentage of ppl who prematch vs normal match in february?

Asked this at my interview, it's pretty high. While I couldn't get a definite number, no student that we met knew of a classmate that matched. Everyone I talked to pre-matched or came off of the wait-list. That said, it was their impression that because of the high number of pre-match/match ratio there is more wait-list movement than normal. I'm sure people match and this had quite a bit of sample bias but UTSW is noticeably more pre-match heavy.
