2019-2020 UT Southwestern

Yes but mainly for people who are applying to competitive specialties. I know people who took gap years who were at the top of our class for dermatology and plastics just cause it’s just becoming more and more competitive every year to match as more applicants apply. But to each their own. Utsw attracts a very competitive cohort that you won’t feel during your first or second year but reveals it self during clinicals and beyond. Its personally been a privilege to be around such a high achieving group of people but it can get annoying and intimidating at times.

I’m surprised by the 5th year thing- the 3 month scholarly activity and 3 month summer isn’t enough to get your pubs in?? Is it standard for those pursuing a competitive speciality to do a 5th year?

I believe it is mostly common for derm and maybe plastics. For the rest, people don't usually take a gap year for research.

Does anyone know if UTSW is done sending out IIs?

Sent them a letter of interest + update this past week and still waiting since July 31st 🙁
Hi! Did you send your update letter via mail or email? I assume one of these since I haven't seen a place to do this through the portal.

There is indeed a document upload section in the secondary application portal. In the drop down menu for type, select "additional documents". Be sure to convert the file to a PDF format before submitting.

Oh, I didn't realize! Thank you!

I bit the bullet and called admissions. I was told they are still doing prematches until January, but nothing about specific dates.
Out of curiousity, is this allowed for them to continue beyond what TMDSAS website says? Thanks for taking one for the team tho

I hope they actually match people who interviewed before January this time around! Already preparing for the waitlist struggle.

i'm having trouble logging into my student self service account with the temporary username / password. has anyone else been able to log in?

I haven’t been able to get in at all, and I just got a financial aid package that I would really like to view. I emailed the support desk but then they said I needed to talk to someone else and so they’re supposed to call me back at some point but I get the feeling that may be after christmas

Me neither. Sent an email Monday morning but got a vacation auto reply.

So I'm OOS and haven't heard anything since my secondary... is that normal? Feel like by now normally they've just either sent the R or II so i'm in a weird limbo!

Congrats on the A, class of 2024! Wow it's crazy to think that you guys might be my future classmates if I get lucky with finishing my PhD early. Or maybe the class after youu...

If anyone is still waiting to hear back, Saturday was their last interview day, unfortunately.

Does anyone know if UTSW matches a good number of students on match day? Or do they do a small batch and then have a lot of waitlist movement?

Sorry if this has been asked, but I interviewed way back in August. I'm OOS and haven't heard anything. Since they have so few OOS students and I've already seen a couple on here who got A's, is this pretty much an R?

Anything could happen march/april. A lot of OOS students could choose to drop their A to attend state schools, or a higher ranked one somewhere else. It's not over until it's over

UTSouthwestern offers a scholarship that takes out the difference between instate and OOS for OOS students. Texas has one of the lowest tuitions anywhere in the nation for instate. So I would eliminate cost as a factor to reject the admission. Proximity to family or other factors can keep someone instate. Free tuition or other scholarships can beat what UTSouthwestern offers to OOS students.

Anyone know if UTSW does Patagonia sweaters? Like anyone see any when they interviewed
I work here (CRI) and I have never seen them. They do have sweat shirts (crew and zip up hoodies) that are Hanes, I believe. 🙂

question: for accepted students, would it be ok to take classes for this spring 2020 semester pass/fail? would they rescind their offer if one does take classes pass/fail?

I wouldn't take stuff P/F that you didn't say you were going to, pretty sure UTSW just requires that you complete your degrees per the acceptance email, so maybe if even with P/F classes you'd still get the degrees you said you would then maybe it'd be fine? Maybe some current students have some better info on what grades need to be maintained post acceptance

I have already completed all of my degree and premed reqs, so this last semester I am mostly taking classes that are interesting to me and not related to my major. This is why I am curious as to pass/fail. Out of the 4 classes I am enrolled in, I would only think about pass/fail 1 of them, not all of them. However, if it will not be fine, I completely understand.

If you met your core UTSW requirements already, you just need to meet your university requirements for pass/fail for your major and diploma.

So if we didn't receive an interview yet and haven't heard anything since secondary... safe to say its a rejection and they just haven't contacted yet?

yes, sorry, no interview by Match Day means no chance this year.
