Thanks! This is my third time applying, you'd think I'd learn my lesson by now 😉

uGPA 3.5 SMP GPA 3.9 MCAT 511
Great ECs: EMT, Medical Assistant, Scribing, 1000+ hours volunteering in free clinics, 500 hours non clinical volunteering, 4000 hours research (over 4 years), 3 sport athlete in college, several leadership positions
Complete: 7/23/19; II: 9/13/19 1:08 PM EST
White, Female, from PA, living in MA

I have applied to UVM twice before and never gotten an interview until now. What did I change? After the first time, I did the SMP and got a better MCAT score. After last year, I got my app in way earlier and wrote much better essays. Timing and secondaries matter!!

I know I asked before but my neuroses is acting up. Did anyone get a complete email before getting the interview invitation? All I got was the secondary received email; but portal says complete.

I know a few people at UVM who didn't interview until Feb! Don't count yourself out yet 🙂 This is my only ii so far so I feel you with getting nervous

Last time I applied I got one for December and waited +8 weeks to hear back and was rejected. I just want another chance cause my application has improved.

For people within driving distance, (4-6 hours), what is the best way of getting to this school?
Train or bus?

Amtrak train will likely be more expensive than a bus. I would honestly look at both options to see how many transfers either might require and weigh the total timing and cost together. I did a search of Amtrak from Boston to Burlington (not sure where you're coming from) on Amtrak on a random day and it was a nine and a half hour journey.

For a Greyhound or Bolt, Do you know how accessible the campus would be from the dropoff point? I haven't done my homework on this yet but just curious to see what others have done.

Definitely bus, the dropoff is on the campus, about 2-3 minute walk from the student center and then about ~10 mins from where the interview building is! (I went there undergrad so I am very familiar with the campus!)

A lot of students who live in Boston or NYC or other places usually would talk the bus home during school breaks (of course that is more referring to undergrads, but I am referring to the convenience factor of where the bus drop off/pick up is)

How is uber here? Debating on whether I should choose a more expensive hotel that includes a shuttle to the campus or a cheaper one (where I would have to use uber)

Would you happen to know which bus drops ppl right off campus? Bolt? Greyhound? Other?

Best II day food so far!

Probably one of the more engaging II days I’ve had as it consists fo the II, group activity, student lunch with medical students on a specific topic, and a reception/meet and greet at the end.

Switching to a very active learning curriculum and it shows as they try to reflect it in everything they do.

I was concerned about the location coming from a big city but Burlington was cozy and beautiful with the mountains/greenery and Christmas light ready downtown.

Probably one of my top OOS choices if not taking into tuition/ financial assistance.

Interview day was amazing! The food was fantastic, and definitely a benefit of attending. The fellow applicants I was with were very friendly and enjoyable. You can easily see they pick students because of who they are, not just the score they possess on paper.

I'm interested in their motives of moving towards an active learning curriculum, where they push towards a 100% lecture-free campus. They gave us an example of "active learning" at lunch, so it was nice. It seems like a great idea, and I see why they're pushing for it, but we'll see!

The interview itself was engaging and unique! You'll enjoy it, and I was honestly having fun by the end of it. They've tailored it to learn more about YOU and how YOU think. The location is fantastic, but I love small towns and areas. Also, the temperature is MUCH better than the midwestern heat and humidity lol 😛

This school seems like a decent choice, but I'm not sure about it with that OOS price tag :\

If you get accepted-to and matriculate into UVM I hope you don't regret complimenting Vermont's weather when you're there in January! : P

Glad to hear you loved interview day. Being from southern New England, going to UVM and being a part of their Connecticut campus would be really cool. To you and other interviewees, did they talk about that much?

Haha, I love the cold! I'm down for those freezing temperatures 😉. But yes, they talk about the Connecticut campus a TON at the end of the interview day. They even have the Dean of that campus talk to y'all!

unfortunately I am not exactly sure which bus company, I also realize they might have changed the route the past couple years. If it drops you off on south winooski ave that is a of a hike from UVM, it's a little over a mile and mostly uphill

For the secondary is there a question about what you did with your gap years?

Not specifically, but they have an "additional comments" prompt in which you can address this if you'd like.

Awesome! any advice on how to prepare for it?

How was your interview experience? and best of luck!
My bad didn't see this til now...
Last time it was 3 years ago so I don't know how applicable it will be for this year's applicants. But it was decent; Dean talked about the school, we broke off into groups, mine did a group activity thing first, then the standard MMI, and a tour of the school/hospital, finally the diversity thing. It was a long day for me (definitely wear comfy shoes) also I didn't eat much cause I have allergies, but everyone else loved it.

Signing that NDA, I can't really give specifics on what you should know, but know YOU. You'll have opportunities to talk about your personal experiences with different interviewers. I'd also suggest being familiar with some ethical situations.

Btw, just so everyone knows. IS applicants are reviewing on a non rolling basis provided you interview before Dec 8 2019 with IS decisions released on Dec 20. OOS decisions are rolling. UVM really wants to consider as many IS applicants as they can

So when do they release the OOS decisions if they aren't rolling?

D3 varsity cross country, swimming, and track. I went to nationals for swimming, academic all american. I ran for cross training and because the teams really needed people and I wasn't too shabby.

Would a fourth-author publication be worth sending to Vermont pre-II? I only ask because they don't have an option on the portal, and the website says to simply email their admissions office with any updates.

Do you have any other pubs?

Do you have any other pubs?
Yep, a third-author basic science pub back in my sophomore year of college. This fourth-author pub is clinical, and was published in a mid-high impact journal. I'm guessing Vermont doesn't value research nearly as much as other schools? Maybe not worth it.

When I tried to update them, someone from the admissions office said that the committee does not see updates, only admissions staff. so not sure if updates are actually accepted?

+1 they said this during the interview day as well. They said they accepted them last year, but are really trying to move away from it.

At my interview, they told us that the committee does not look at/consider update letters.

Agreed -- it is a beautiful spot-- but you were in Burlington on a very beautiful day in September. it gets ****ing FRIGID up there. All those mountains and greenery disappear quickly 😉

what is the rationale behind this?
Because updates are a logistically ****ing nightmare. And in all honesty is an update really going to change whether a school admits you, sends a II or not? I have to imagine rarely does it make a significant impact.

Agree 1000%. I think updates can be overwhelming for most schools. Especially if they dont have a large number of staff etc
