2019-2020 Wake Forest

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
You can’t check the status. They just email you if you get an II

Technically there is a hub on the ApplyWeb link (that includes apps from any schools that use ApplyWeb) and it at least shows if you are complete. I have other schools using the same system that actually have the status beyond complete so I guess it's up to the school how much info is actually on there.

So I interviewed here a few weeks ago. Do they wait until October 15 to tell you ANY news? Or if they've rejected you will they let you know before?

I just hate the idea of waiting 3 more weeks if I got rejected lol!
how was your interview experience? any advice on preparation?

Interviewed here and absolutely loved it.
sketchy, uworld, pathoma included in tuition costs
cadaver lab is new and doesn't smell (6 people per cadaver; 8 hours per week but split so that you're only dissecting in groups of 3)
strong ultrasound integration
faculty and admin actually seem to care
students are nice and attractive
new facility is amazing and the study spaces are incredible
the professors take practice step exams so they know what to teach and also dissect first aid and integrate it into their classes
high step (233 98% pass rate 2019)
track how you're doing with stats and can predict your step score
cost of living is reasonable and Winston Salem is cute
matches well into competitive specialties
P/F preclinical (does count for AOA) but students aren't ranked
lecture attendance isn't mandatory and lectures are recorded and posted around 2 pm (not live-streamed)
edit to add: they also have unlimited free printing that people like to use during anatomy
edit to add: FREE PARKING FOR STUDENTS

This makes me want an interview even more badly!!!

they said to us today that if you've interviewed now (or earlier) you will find out on Oct 15 or 16 what your status is. If you're accepted or rejected, it will be on the portal (after 12:00 pm) and if you're waitlisted, you will get an email. If you're put on the waitlist, you have to submit a letter of interest within 4 weeks to stay on the waitlist. Their incoming class of 2019 had about 30% that were accepted off of the waitlist.

Can confirm, this school is amazing and I couldn’t be happier to be a student here. I’ll gladly answer any questions y’all have (dm or on this thread)

Additional comments from a current first-year student because it's time for a study break and I want to share how awesome it is to be here. If you have any questions feel free to send me a DM or just throw me a question below.

Every and any textbook or resource you may use or need is also available through the school e-library along with physical copies as well.
cadaver lab is new and doesn't smell (6 people per cadaver; 8 hours per week but split so that you're only dissecting in groups of 3)
Some blocks of anatomy lab are stinkier than others. While the lab doesn't smell, even with the tables with the vacuum system, the odor from dissections is just inevitable. On a bright side, masks are available upon request for the more pungent blocks. You also have 24/7 unrestricted access to the lab and it is encouraged that you study from the other dissected bodies so that you can learn the variations of structures between individuals.
strong ultrasound integration
The curriculum changes every year so I can't say what future years will have. For our current class, integration is not only limited to ultrasound but also radiology and histology through our different anatomy blocks.

This is going to be a common point at most medical schools. All med school faculty members are there to teach you and make sure you become the best version of yourself by the time you leave their sides. At WFSOM, professors do not have "office hours" since you can just go to their offices and ask for help whenever they are not lecturing or having a meeting. They are here to help you so make sure you take advantage of their availability. In addition to readily available lecturers and professors, the school offers a plethora of programs like free yoga, salsa, fitness, cooking programs to ensure student wellness and health. Not only you'll have the support from your faculty and admin but every single one of your classmates will become a valuable asset during the rigorous years of medical education.
students are nice and attractive
You obviously have not seen me around.
new facility is amazing and the study spaces are incredible
Yes. Five floors of classrooms, study and common areas with giant screens where you can project your screen from the computers that are provided to you.
the professors take practice step exams so they know what to teach and also dissect first aid and integrate it into their classes
They are also updated with their literature as well so they will provide the most updated information and admit to their mistakes if they ever make any.
high step (233 98% pass rate 2019)
track how you're doing with stats and can predict your step score
You can meet with your advisors at any time for feedback.
cost of living is reasonable and Winston Salem is cute
If you're from a major city, you will at some point feel like Winston does not have enough to do. That's when you drive an hour out to Charlotte or Greensboro and enjoy what is not available here.
matches well into competitive specialties
I hope this statement applies to me in the future too.
P/F preclinical (does count for AOA) but students aren't ranked - I hear stories from other schools where this is not a thing and makes me very glad to be here. All (most) of our classmates know each other and we are able to just walk into any room and study with each other.
lecture attendance isn't mandatory and lectures are recorded and posted around 2 pm (not live-streamed) - You can watch lectures at increased speeds of 2x or even 4x if you are physically capable of understanding someone 4x.

You could be on some internal hold?
People are so quick to assume that every school reviews applications in the order they're received when it seems like very few schools actually do that. I certainly don't want to assume that I will get an interview but I do have very strong ties to the school. Putting others down to calm your fears is neither productive nor realistic. Just sit back and relax. The cycle is still young.

How am I putting him down? I was just giving a possible reason. If you're going to feel put down by a 7 word comment from some random stranger on SDN, then that's on you.

Schools don't necessarily review apps exactly in chronological order, but the earlier apps do tend to be read first. Look at the R waves from other schools and they tend to be targeted to people who apply earlier, implying that they do look at certain apps earlier.

Side note: holy 54 schools man

I'm not trying to start a fight with some random stranger here. I'm just pointing out that it's a little unfair to suggest that I was put on hold only to confirm your belief that your application will be reviewed soon. Not offended. I'm pretty assured of myself and my abilities.

you’re being little bit dramatic they weren’t putting you down just simply stating a possible explanation, i’m in the same boat as you so i actually appreciated someone offering a possible explanation for why i might not have heard back. you’re going into a very difficult and cut throat career field, toughen up and don’t get so offended this person clearly didn’t mean to hurt ur feelings. if you don’t like a comment on SDN or are offended just scroll past it

Once again, not offended. Just pointing out that the "possible explanation" is not necessarily realistic and somewhat pessimistic. Maybe the way I worded it made it seem different than what I meant, but I just don't think there's any need to get stressed out at this point and I don't want people to make it seem like there is. I'm just trying to help. I don't think it's fair to comment on my ability to handle medical school. You don't know me at all.

I'm not going to say anything else. I just hope everyone can calm down a little and let things play out how they will. You've done all that you can, so now you just wait.

To lighten up the mood, here's a picture of cute dogs

Damn that's a long time
Yeah I got a complete email, subject line "Application Complete" from [email protected] via collegenet.com
Interesting, I never found anything other than "submitted" on the portal.

So idk if I'm being paranoid but does anyone know what the "Confirmed" timestamp on the portal means? Mine was confirmed recently (I received the complete email back in August).... does this mean I can expect a decision soon?

Are you talking about "File Complete"?

Just calculated it for the first time just for you : LizzyM 67, but I also did an SMP that I don't know how to incorporate into this score, very non-trad, OOS
Also a nontrad with SMP and got rejected today as well. Maybe WF doesn’t like us reinventors lol. Good luck tho. Im sure you will get in somewhere that is a better fit.

whoa I just checked under the "view details" tab and there it was "Confirmed: 09:14 am, October 02, 2019 (PST)" - I was complete in mid-July - no idea what this means

Lol also have this "Confirmed" timestamp for earlier today. Complete mid-late July

That never showed up in my portal before I got an II but ymmv  I'd say let things just play out and don't read into it even though that's difficult to do

It might mean we are headed to the R pile  if no invite was extended

eh, Wake seems pretty good at giving people the R and maybe this is just a computer glitch and you are headed for an II!
Haha I feel you. In all seriousness I have another school that uses the same portal app and received confirmed status before I got an II there so yeah prob best not to read too much into it.

Oh I’m good haha - didn’t read anything into it - just wanted to post for evidence purposes - sometimes it's just nice to know that others are experiencing similar things - hope everyone is enjoying their Wednesday! 🙂

Oof I just checked and mine says "Confirmed: 08:15 AM, October 02, 2019 (PST)"

Complete 8/12. I would've never noticed this little detail and now feeling a bit anxious which might be a sign I should take a break from SDN 😉

Is it under "view checklist?"

Ah mine was confirmed for earlier today too. "Confirmed: 08:15 AM, October 02, 2019 (PST)"

I don't think so. I don't have it for this school, but another school (II there) has the confirmed note. It is under 'View Details' (right below the school name), and it says:

Thanks...then I am also confirmed...

Edit: @u_raptor - didn't you have an II here? Did you / do you have a confirmed time under "view details"?
