2020-2021 Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM-Carolinas)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I received that and thought that was the complete email but I just received the complete email and it was in my junk mail but it says: “
We are pleased to learn of your continued interest in the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. I can confirm your application is complete and we are in receipt of your Secondary Application, processing fee, and all required letters of recommendation.

We will continue to interview into spring 2021. Once your application is reviewed, we will be certain to provide you with an update on your status.

Considering we utilize a rolling admissions process....,”

When did you submit your secondary? You might have mentioned it before but I don't see it anywhere.

Anyone else get the invite for the how to interview online zoom session? Confused why they send that when they didnt even mark my file as complete yet. Also why are all these events in the middle of the work day? I can never attend them since I am at work.

I also got it. I’m thinking they probably just sent it to everyone who applied, but maybe it means they’ll start extending II’s soon?

Just applied. Good luck everyone!

Is this also the thread for the Virginia campus? For whatever reason I can only find this one.

It's a panel of physicians I believe, whatever it is it's only an hour and didn't sound like I need to be camera-ready for it. I have quite a bit of shadowing but I thought I'd sign up and try to squeeze it in during my lunch break at work. If it doesn't work out, I think there was one at 5 p.m. to hop in on.

I messaged them to see if a camera is required, i work until 5 but can hop on a work computer after to join, however i dont have a camera or microphone and will be in my work scrubs. I dont really have any shadowing but have thousands of hours working directly with 15 doctors, which i feel is more insightfull then passive shadowing. Never the less would like to join the session.

same situation here! wondering if I can attend the noon session during my lunch break at work. if they got back to you, can you let us know what they said?

Did anyone receive an II yet from this school? My file was marked complete on August 7th, but other VCOM branches seem to be sending their IIs... Thank you in advance! :)

No not yet. So the individual campus sends invites ? Not just VCOM itself?

1. For the question that asks us " Have you ever been charged with a traffic violation such as speeding greater than 10 miles over the speed limit or reckless driving (excluding parking tickets), misdemeanor, felony, summary charge, or any other criminal charge? Please list all charges, even if you were found not guilty or if the charge was dismissed or expunged as these still often show up on your record. If yes, please detail the charge and results of the charge (whether or not you were convicted)", how are we supposed to access and remember that information? What if we don't recall if/when we received a speeding ticket and what the outcome of that was?

2. For the CV section did you guys just copy and paste the activities from your AACOMAS into this section, or how did you approach it?

I would really appreciate the help. Thank you.

I haven't gotten to the secondary yet. I find it kind of ridiculous they ask for speeding tickets just doesn't make sense to me. So if I was going 9mph over it doesn't matter? I can understand disclosing a reckless driving charge. I received one speeding ticket out of state in New York years ago.... there's no way in hell I'll be able to find the information on that ticket lol

I can’t help you with Question 1 cause I can’t relate lol but for Question 2, I just copied and pasted!

I believe for the CV it asked for a brief description so I didn’t copy and paste, just wrote a sentence for each thing

For number 1 if you did something like accidentally run a stop sign or go into the carpool lane on the freeway, is that something you would have to report according to their question?

No, not unless you got a ticket for it.

You don't have to. All you have to do is answer "yes," then it will ask for an explanation. Simple as, "Received speeding ticket in out of state in NY. Did not know what the speed limit was, and thought I was driving safely. Paid my fine and ticket was resolved / attended court / traffic school / etc.. and ticket was resolved."

No not yet. So the individual campus sends invites ? Not just VCOM itself?
Correct; the specific branch that you are chosen to interview at will send the invite.

No, not unless you got a ticket for it.

Yes, assuming you got a ticket for both and went to court. For the carpool lane ticket the cop didn't show off so I was off the hook, and for the stop sign ticket they showed up and I had to pay the fine.

Also, for the CV section where they say to list "Educational experiences" would I list "Attended ______ College" under the description and for years put something like 2004-2006, or does that go without saying? I'm thinking of listing all the years I was in different colleges and was wondering if this is required for this section. Thank you.

Hey everyone, I am a VCOM student albeit at another campus. I checked in on this thread just to see what was going on. It appears that there are a lot of questions going around.

Feel free to ask me any questions, or DM me if you are uncomfortable with asking them in the thread!

Right, if you get a ticket for a non-moving violation, then you have to report it.

Also, I did not have a CV section when I applied to the school that I can remember. I do not know what the best way to approach that is since you technically already had to send your transcripts anyways. Your best bet is to fill out the entire CV section like you would for a job / like you would if it was your primary. But again, I am unsure.

Okay so assuming you report a non-moving violation (what does that exactly mean btw), what if you don't remember the exact year/date? How the hell do they expect us to get that information? Thanks.

A non-moving traffic violation is basically any violation in which the car is not moving. Ergo, parking ticket, blocking fire lane ticket, parking in handicap, etc. Meaning you should report any violation in which a police officer had to actually pull you over eg. speeding, failure to yield, ran a stop sign, etc.

Does it specifically ask for month/day/year? I don't remember if it asked me that, but I know for certain that if it did, I can remember the month I got pulled over in. Of which, I would simply answer with the first day of the month, for example; 06/01/2017. Further, you could simply put in the description that you can't remember the exact date but its close to the listed one. They aren't looking for you to be EXACT. They just want to know that when they pull your background check, what they expect to be there is there (or better yet, not there) - that there won't be any surprises.

I applied late - in October. So, it only took about a week to get my secondary. I didn't get an interview until March. Interviewed in April. Accepted in July.

Its a long process, and its early. Hang in there, and be patient.

I received my 2ndary almost 4 weeks ago but due to many other obligations going on I still haven't been able to submit it. I'm waiting on feedback and plan on submitting it in the next couple of days. When would you anticipate I would hear back about a potential interview invite once submitting my 2ndary in late August?

No one can answer that. It depends on what kind of applicant you are, what your story is, etc. etc. Most of my classmates that submitted in August though were interviewed by the end of January.

VCOM is dedicated to educating students in many medical specialties. Those specialties in shortage in
the Appalachian Region, Southeastern United States, and Delta Region are of particular interest to
VCOM. Please prioritize your current top three (in numerical order) of the specialties listed below.
Please be advised your response does not guarantee or exclude admission.

They then want us to rank 1st, 2nd, and 3rd specialty choices...

Do they want more primary care, or do they want some people to fill the openings for other specialists like urology, ortho, rads, vascular... ? I'm not sure what to put since I don't even care rn, I will decide on my rotations. What do they want to hear (yes I know they want to hear what I truly think, but what they want an optimal applicant to say?)?

Yes, I read that, but I could not find any lists that show which specialties are in a shortage in the "Appalachian Region, Southeastern United States, and Delta Region"... I have found lists that say stuff like such and such a specialty is expected to grow by XX% or lists of national averages of specialties that are in a shortage, but many of these lists contradict each other. I'm trying to find out which specialties are in a shortage in the relevant regions. Do you know where to find this information?

Does this school have a strong preference to admit students from Appalachian Region, Southeastern United States, and Delta Region regions? I'm a Cali resident so just considering my chances

From VCOM's website... 72% of matriculants were from their targeted states.

Yes, they do prefer those applicants. But we haver several people in my class from California, so it is possible.

II just now! Missed the call but they sent an email right after. LM 70, completed 7/30

Anyone else submit around 7/7 still not receive a complete email? Everything is checked in the portal. Not sure if I should reach out or give it a few more weeks.

Also, just breaking this down; there is no IN-STATE vs OUT-OF-STATE for VCOM. It is a private school so where you live doesn't matter. Their only preference is to the applications from the appalachian region, delta region, and southeastern US.

anyone else not recieve a secondary yet? I had gotten an email saying they would review my application 8/10 before sending a secondary and I still dont have one yet.

Has anyone received an interview utilizing the last “120 hour” rule?
