2020-2021 Hofstra (Zucker)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm really hoping they haven't gotten to us yet, not that we were passed over. They told my group we could hear back in Dec but we were super late Nov.
Me as well. Historically, Hofstra has always had a second December A date 1-5 days later. Even though it's usually smaller, it seems to be concentrated on November interviewees. I'm unsure if the second December A date will happen this year since it's already so closed to Christmas.

How was the interview here?
My interviews were conversational, the first one really pressed me on almost every response and didn't express much emotion despite us surprisingly having tons in common, could have gone better. The second was great and interviewer was very excited to get to know me.

For my own reasons, I left the II feeling as if I wasn't a perfect fit, but I am thankful for the chance and would love to attend if given the opportunity, they truly offer an awesome program.

what do you mean by pressed on your responses? like would try to find holes in your responses?

Not the OP, but something like that. Some of the questions were tough and tricky, but I didn't feel like they were designed as "gotcha" questions. They felt as if the interviewer truly wanted to know me and understand why I did things in a certain way.

It's possible we'll get a second round after the holidays. They sent out two rounds for the past few years, so there's hope lol
Looks like they may have accepted some a couple days ago but only one posted on SDN.

For those who have received an A, have you been able to complete the tasks (affirmation statement and the terms & conditions) on the portal? I have been unable to open anything, and I've tried three different browsers.

I had to open it on internet explorer. Chrome didn't work.

Would it be safe to assume that second wave of decisions for post ii would be sometime in Jan?

Yes, I believe that's what they said during my interview date (12/9) - that we should be hearing sometime in January (after the holidays)!
At my interview on 12/9, they told us we would hear back any time between January and March lol so hopefully on the earlier end of that range...

I want to preface this post by saying I know Hofstra's matches have been quite strong and program director and USNWR rankings are not great indicators of much. I got the A a little bit earlier in the cycle and am very excited about Hofstra, but why do people think those rankings have lagged behind? It seems like it has been the new school whose reputation is getting better and better every year, but the rankings haven't changed too much. Match list, STEP scores, reputation of Northwell etc. all point to a quality school. I realize prestige isn't everything, just curious people's opinions.

It's a combination of a few different factors. Hofstra started off above 100 (like most new schools) and has been steadily climbing in the rankings. The two big issues are research and location. The school does have a very solid research program through Northwell's Feinstein center, but it's mostly clinical and translational research. As far as I know most of the wet lab work is done at Cold Spring Harbor, which is closely affiliated with Northwell/ZSOM but (on paper) not part of the school. Since USNWR highly values research funding, this arrangement hurts our ranking a bit. Also, to be blunt, there's a lot of competition in the area: Colombia, Mt. Sinai, Cornell, hell even NYU are all within spitting distance of ZSOM which makes to competition a bit stiff. This is an issue that the school is definitely aware of, and hoping to address over the next few years. I was told during MS1 that their goal was to be in the top 30 within the next decade. I know that in the big picture rankings don't determine how good of a doctor you'll become, but people do look at them so you can't fully ignore them.

Do they make decisions for everyone on a particular interview day?
Long answer: Unless they changed how they do acceptances in the past few years, they release decisions in batches that may or may not include everyone from a given interview day (although they generally try to do so)

Short answer: No

Hey all, just wanted to pop my head back into the chat. I'm sure the past six months have been crazy for you all, and making the decision of where to spend the next four years of your life based on a half-day Zoom interview is far from ideal. I'm a current third year student at ZSOM and I'm happy to answer any questions you may have about the school, Northwell, hospitals, NYC, Long Island, anything at all. No question too big or small. Happy to take questions via PM as well if you want to talk privately.

Hope the next few months go as well as possible, and you find a school you love (ZSOM or elsewhere)!

PS - I am not on the admissions committee, I do not represent the school in an official capacity, I don't report back to anyone, just trying to help a bit during a crazy and stressful time

PPS - I'm on rotations so I might take a bit to respond, apologies in advance!

Hey thanks for making yourself available. Can you speak on how the mandatory scheduling worked out for you? Was it a positive or negative to have so much required programming throughout the week?

There's really not a ton of required programming during MS1 and MS2 - The school has a hard cap of 20 hours per week of required content, they're not allowed to schedule more than that. Clinical responsibilities like EMT shifts and the Initial Clinical Experience rotations aren't included in that but you have flexibility to schedule them whenever and it's not more than an extra four or five hours a week. In short, you won't ever have more than about 25 hours a week of required sessions and clinical work.

All in all you can expect to be busy from about 8am to noon every day, or 1pm at the latest. Once you get the hang of your study habits and skills you can be done studying by dinnertime and have the evening off to relax and do whatever you want. Honestly it's basically the same as a regular 8am to 5pm job, including required sessions and independent studying.

Honestly exactly what I was looking for. Thanks!

Where do the med students typically rotate? Is it common for students to rotate in hospitals in NYC? (and if so, do students commute or choose to live closer to the city?) Thanks for your help!

How long after the vita invite did you guys get a II? (I got the vita invite today, so I am assuming they won't process my completed vita until tomorrow since it will be Thursday)
