2020-2021 Rochester

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got an II recently! I'm from California though and am concerned about how north the school is. Can someone tell me a bit more detail about the school if possible? Is it diverse or mostly white? Is the surrounding city/town diverse/interesting? How cold is it (worse than Boston/New York weather)? What's the relationship between the school and the communities around it for service?
when were you complete?

I was interviewing on a Wednesday and got the 'further information' email the Monday before at around 5:30 PM (eastern)
Could you describe what the "further information" entails? Does it tell you the specific interview times? From the website it seems like one on one interviews can take place anytime between 7:30am to 7:00pm, which could be a big inconvenience for some.

Yea, essentially the zoom link for the interview, troubleshooting tips, and telling us that our schedule for our interviews is available through the applicant portal. So yea mine told me the exact interview times through the applicant portal under the Interview tab (click around and should be able to find it. If not, dm me and I can help you). I feel like they kept it to a reasonable 8:30 am - 5:00 pm ET but that was just my experience, might be different for different interview dates. I hope that helps! 🙂

I just saw my schedule for the day on the portal. But there was no zoom link. And I haven’t received any email as well

They might be a day late. Every interview date is going to be a little different, but hopefully, you get it by tomorrow :/. Sorry I couldn't be of more help

Does anyone know how they view letter of interest/ letter of intent post interview? Had mine recently and I am IS with strong ties to the school despite my lower MCAT score. This is my top choice and I want to send a letter of intent but not sure if it would be premature especially so close to my interview date?

Do not know specific to this school, but in general, letter of intents sent so early are construed as untrue acts of desperation. They may come of use in May or June if still on waitlist.

I would say a letter of interest would be appropriate. They view them positively and it shows genuine interest according to the 'All Access' podcast segment with the Rochester Dean of admissions. I would, however, hold off on the letter of intent.

is there on campus housing? do most students live on campus or off campus?

I don't think there's on campus housing. They said at my interview that most students and residents live in a neighborhood behind the hospital that's a 5-15 minute walk to the hospital/medical school building, which are physically connected. Rochester is a super affordable city, which imo is a big plus.

Also, FYI asking the same question in a lot of threads at once gets kind of annoying because it spams people's alerts.

thanks for answering, and sorry if its spam but I needed to know for multiple schools. not sure of any way to get around that.

For those who have interviewed, how important were the 4 most important activities and 2 short essays during your interview? Did the interviewers refer to them a lot, a little bit, or not at all? Also, did they try to match you with interviewers who might share common interests with you?

for my interview, it seemed like they used those as conversation starters; rather than focusing on all of them, my faculty interviewer focused on one specific aspect and we talked about it the entire interview. and yes, they matched me with interviewers who shared common interests, but more so people who were very similar to me (they also mentioned that rochester tries to do that, but not sure if that's true across all interviewer-interviewee pairs)

I have an interview coming up. Just to clarify, does the "student panel" portion of the interview day itinerary refer to the interview?

Can anyone familiar or current students describe the interview format a bit? I'm not seeing much in the way of description of its format. I'll read some of the recent messages as well, but I think many might be interested in a general primer, as I do get the sense their format is "non-standard" in relation to other interviews I have had. Thanks.

The interviews are blind except for these 4 essays.

The student panel is just a group of students who are available to answer questions about the school. The evaluative portion is two blind interviews (they get your undergrad institution and your Rochester essays), and a group discussion of an ethical case with a moderator.

How do you cancel an interview? Is there a way on the portal or do I have to email admissions?

For other schools, I've been emailing them and that has seemed to work. I don't think there is a way through the portal.

just to add the interviewers will also know if you have an IA on your primary

Given the email they sent about still reviewing apps, can we assume that all interviews left will be sent in the next few days? I thought they scheduled into February usually though.

do you know who would be included in that wave, I interviewed last week. or is it just 6 weeks from your interview date
I interviewed 11/18 and reached out because I hadn't heard anything. What I was told is that the committee got a bit behind over the holidays and because of COVID, and that I would hear a final decision by next week. So obviously anything is possible, but I would be extremely impressed if they were able to pull off such a quick turnaround time!

ah okay! yeah i ask because i saw people who heard back early December some had interviewed only 10-14 days before I'm assuming its rare but possible. if they experienced a delay though I'm sure they have a lot more people to go through so wont keep my hopes up but good luck- hope things turn out well for you 🙂

Very same question..... I'm curious if we'll (people who have not hear much besides update emails) all hear their decisions (II, pre-II R, WL/Hold) this week/next week Monday?

Sending all the positive energy their way! and good luck to you, friend!

I know haha I was so anxious for a long time after seeing others accepted who interviewed after me. But I guess it also all depends on when both your interviewers submit their reports, because that determines the order in which they're reviewed. So really who knows! Thank you so much, same to you!!

Are you able to submit the "activities and essays" a little less than 3 days before the interview? like if the interview is on a Wednesday, can I submit them on the Sunday evening before or does the portal get locked exactly 72 hours before the start of your interview? Thank you!

My interview was on a Wednesday and I submitted on the Saturday before hand. Sunday evening may be cutting it close, but I am not too sure about the portal locking or anything
