2020-2021 SUNY - Downstate

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just read last years thread's posts from early May until early August and saw that there was a lot of waitlist movement/withdrawn As/late As in May, June, and July. Hopefully it's the same this year, so I'm going to do my best to be patient.

Best of luck to everybody! I hope you all get in where you want to go!

For the model release, do you need to fill out your state senator/state assembly member/etc? I’m unsure why this information is necessary.

i've not only heard but SEEN (i was part of last year's cycle) that DS has a lot of WL movement usually, i pray that we see that this year
Did you apply for the next cycle while waiting for downstate last year?

yes i did!, i was part of the infamous "5/6" waitlist (group of ppl who basically never got called off the waitlist compared to ppl put on the waitlist on May 10th) it was disheartening to see and i was on 3 other waitlists as well. i knew i had to reapply because waiting around especially past May was too much of a risk for me.

P.S if youre deciding on whether you should restart your app. it's whatever you feel comfy with. you have time as of now it's only been 5 days after 4/30. take it by week and decide from there

It's just so random. I was expecting a massive A list after 4/30 but it's just a few people every few days but thanks for the info I'm probably going to wait until near end of May

i expected the same too. last year it was a few every random days too. who really knows with DS... they're very iffy. end of may sounds smart to me tbh

Congrats to everybody who has been accepted. I'm a student here, just wanted to say Downstate has been great. If you need help finding housing, below is the Facebook group where you can reach out to current students graduating/moving out of their apartments. It can be a nice perk living with an upperclassman. I would not recommend living on-campus. Also, feel free to message me if you have any questions.

Could you elaborate a little on why you don’t recommend the on campus housing? How does it work? When do we have to decide between on campus or off?

Hi everyone! Was wondering if anyone completed their medical forms yet and if it got checked off their pre-matric checklist. I'm working through mine atm

I didn’t know about that. wow. ughh

do you remember if there was an earlier waitlist wave (like what happened this year on 4/21)?

nope this year is very diff...... last year there was a post-II rejection wave first on 4/24. so for those that weren't on it ( like me), I was happy that i not only survived but now there even less applicants that they need to choose to give an A to. THEN outa nowhere as A's were being randomly thrown out, on 5/6 a bunch of ppl were thrown on the first wave of AL's then basically the other half of people were thrown on the AL on 5/10. as the days after in May everyone noticed mostly on the 5/10 list were pulled off.

this year there seems to be no post-II R's so far and there was ONE HUGE AL wave on 4/21. not only was it earlier than last year but alot of other details are diff as you can see. is this better or worse? i LITERALLY HAVE NO IDEA 🙂 i'm just praying for the best

i sent mine on 4/29 and they emailed me back on 5/3 saying "received" thats it lol. i takes them mad long just to respond t receiving it, it's gonna take awhile for them to get through it

Thanks so much for all your information!! 🙂
what do you think it means for people who haven’t heard anything yet since they’ve already started pulling off the waitlist? Also were there any people who never heard any post II?

thank for the write up. sounds like hell. it really makes me wonder if they did AL instead of post-ii R.. but also, why would they do that when they have so many options of students anyways (i’m on the 4:21 wave)

gotchu guys haha. Not only did i live through last years cycle but i am extremely neurotic and over the past year i have reread that thread over 10 times that i have memorized the dates of everything important that occurred🙂

i don't want to assume anything at all especially because it's SUCH a big diff. like last year there were some people who hadn't got rejected or AL and got accepted, however these people ranged from interviews across from sept-march/april. this year everyone from Sept-late Jan has basically heard a decision either A or AL.... people who havent heard are March-April people and it's ALOT OF PEOPLE who havent heard. so idk what they want to do with those late interview applicants. they been accepting people off the AL but then there was one person who said they got an A off a march interview the other day....

does any of this make sense? NOPE. does DS make sense? NOPE. do i still want to go to this school HELL YEA LOL

Thank you this is amazing!! Loving everyone on this thread being just a neurotic it makes me feel so much better 😂

gotchu, just trying to send some info out there. oh i dont think so! one thing for sure is that there has been only ONE AL wave this cycle. it was that big one on 4/21 which everyone from SEPT-LATE JAN were put on (from those reported here obvi). and so far from the acceptances reported after 4/20. three were AL->A, one was a march interview (unknown if they were on AL since it's late interview), and the last person that got the A yesterday, stuff is unknown too

so i DONT think 4/21 AL was a rejection wave at a all. i DO believe that DS struggles to make decisions timely, so instead of actually making a post-ii R group and a AL group, they threw EVERYONE on the AL to give them more time to make decisions on everyone

This might be a stupid question but is the AL and a waitlist the same thing at this school? Is there a sep waitlist other than the AL that was released?

For any current students what’s student housing like? I live in a walk up on the fifth floor so anything really would be an upgrade LOL

On-campus housing is quite expensive but the building is really old. Most rooms don't have air-conditioning and it gets miserable in the summers. Fire alarms occasionally go off in the middle of the night and there's also a strict no-visitor policy right now due to COVID. The dorms are right next to campus but you can live within a block or two of campus at a fraction of the price (or for the same price, but with much nicer amenities).

lovely lol. time to do this pre matric checklist
also, piggy backing off this, the ds portal kinda doesnt explain where we upload all the information they want. anyone have any idea where we send out transcripts, proof of citizenship and everything other than the health forms bc thats the only thing they do explain lol

But wouldn’t on campus housing be better for meeting/hanging out with people? And maybe covid restrictions will loosen up next year

At this point, since so many March/April have gotten ALs, does this mean if you didn't hear back, it's most likely an R?

I just received an email to select "commit to enroll" by the close of business day tomorrow, but I just logged into my portal and I'm still on the Alt list... ?? Did anyone else get this email

Last year there was a second wave of ALs a couple days after a big AL day like today. So could be anything! Even maybe an A

Does anyone know how they handle the $100 deposit refunds for people who withdraw acceptances? I asked them in my withdrawal email but didn't get an answer. Does it get returned as a check automatically or is it refunded to my credit card?
