2020-2021 Texas A&M

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just wanted to tag on since I'm in similar position. Obv covid cancelledd some of my activities, but nothing like a real "hardship." I don't have anything close to 3500 char that for sure. So I'm curious if this is truly optional?

I'm in the same position. I'm also worried that on the other hand, if you decided to get involved in something currently, how you could possibly respond to them asking you why you chose to possibly endanger others during covid. Can't really imagine many would have a volunteering experience that is actually making a significant difference rn. Truly a catch 22 lmao.

If I want to do research continuing even after medical school, do I have to do medicine academics (teaching med students as faculty) as well? I am interested in medicine research but not academics.

How is this question tied to A&M application?

There are many things one can do after medicine. People have gone into business consulting, started companies, started working as administrators in medicare/medicaid etc. What you can do depends on when you want to start and whether you will be paid on par with a medical degree. One can take a research position right after medicine or after residency or after working for a while as a doctor or so on.

You might be paid on par with post doctorates if you join after medicine, on par with starting doctor if you join after residency or on par with medical faculty if you join faculty with research and teaching responsibilities. Most people dont go into research only positions because they dont get paid as well as a doctor. An example is that there is a research gastroenterology fellowship at many locations but you see lot of them going unfilfulled each year since the expected research positions after completion are no where close to being as remunerative as a GI practicing physician after 26 years of education.

The optional question asks what areas of medicine appeal to you, so I put medicine research as one. And oh okay that's good to know! Appreciate it.

For the specific field of medicine that interests you question, is it ok if we talked about being interest in something like pulmonology or does it have to talk about academic medicine or something along those lines? I was worried as I did research in pulmonology and volunteered with one as well, so was worried it might be too specific

I don't think you can go wrong either way. Just honestly tell them how you picture your medical career looking right now.

Anyone want to further explain the "two brief interactive encounters with our standardized patients via [Texas A&M's] telehealth platform," for the interview?

For the third question, I was wondering if it would be okay to write about a family member's mental illness that you helped them through?

Does anyone know how clerkship locations are assigned? Do students get to choose/rank the sites, and if so do most people get their first choice?

This was talked about in the tmdsas courage session with A&M.
Start watching around ~11:30

for anyone else interviewing tomorrow, how many interviews do you have? I have 3, 30 minute interviews, but on the website, it says each student will have 2 interviews and someone I know who interviewed last week also only had 2

Hi! I am having a lot of trouble figuring out what exactly is meant by the human condition.. I am not sure what type of anecdotes to include that would fit with "the human condition", because it is so vague. Can anyone provide any examples that could help me?

I interpreted this as being something involving important life events or experiences, so I wrote about some of the more impactful things I saw while volunteering.

Another example could be seeing someone reacting to their loved ones death, but in a way you didn't expect and made an impression on you.

disclaimer: I could be completely wrong about this but to me "human condition" is the type of event that you don't forget

Thank you! I have just heard so many different interpretations, so I wasn't sure. This is definitely the hardest question I have had to answer on a secondary app so far haha

The human condition is the universal aspects of being alive and being born human. They are the events, thoughts and feelings everyone has experienced even if to different degrees and is part of the reason you are able to be empathetic with someone else. Illness/injury, suffering and death are common health care related topics. The prompt is intentionally really broad and you could write about anything from experiences that made you more culturally aware to your personal experiences with / people you have met with chronic debilitating diseases, etc.

Does anyone else who has already interviewed not yet see A&M pop up in your TMDSAS "School Rank Preference" tab? I interviewed 30 July and am wondering if there's anything I need to be worried about.

Thank you so much, that helped a lot!!

I do not even see this tab on my TMDSAS and I interviewed on the 23rd. Probably nothing to worry about

Would you guys suggest straying away from essay topics mentioned in the primary apps when answering these secondary questions? For example, for the "Aggie Core Values" question, I want to write about either my medical trip or my job as an RN, but I already wrote about those in my primary apps. I could write about my job as a chem TA but I just feel like the stories I have for my previous two are more interesting; I just don't want to sound repetitive.

If you could expand on your medical trip or job (maybe a specific experience?), I would do that. It highlights something that was obviously impactful for you and it will shine through your writing. My $.02 cents!

They REALLY like those Aggie values - for this school write about at least one of them. How do you show honesty and integrity in your life?

Are y'all wearing your suit/interview clothes for the SPE?

I started the secondary on my own without an email invite and submitted a couple weeks ago. However, the portal still hasn't marked my primary application and MCAT scores as received. I'm starting to get a bit worried that bc I didn't get an explicit invite they're taking a longer time to match up my secondary to my TMDSAS application. For people who started the secondary without an invite, is this wait normal?
I'm having the same issue, were you able to get yours resolved?
