2020-2021 Texas Tech, Lubbock

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How are officers chosen? Just volunteer for the spot?

Class officers are voted on during the first block (COA). Everyone who wants to run for an officer position will submit an application and then the options will be sent out to everyone in the class and then the class will vote on each officer position!

10/30 here. Nothing yet :/ fingers crossed.

Is tech your first choice?
I think so! I’m really hoping for the FMAT program too. Do you know if they tell you yay/nay for FMAT if they extend a prematch offer? Or do FMAT offers come separate?

I'm not sure, but I'm aiming for FMAT also 🙂 let's hope it's a double package deal! I'm surprised there are more people interested in FMAT!

Yeah same here I got the invite in August and interviewed within the first half of September :/
hey it’s okay, don’t stress yourself out. at this point you can’t change anything and it’s best not to worry about something that is completely out of your control.

take it easy and wait until match day, it’ll all work out for us : )

Random thought but do you think they might be getting all IS applicants they want first and then getting the OOS last (match day)?

Honestly, it's impossible to say. Last year, one person said that they were accepted on October 15th as an out-of-state applicant. Then two more people said that they for accepted in early November. I haven't seen a single person say that they have been accepted out of state for this year, but obviously not everyone that is accepted talks about it on this thread. It definitely would make sense that they would prioritize getting their in-state applicants because they have to retain at least 90% of them, but I have no idea why they wouldn't accept any out-of-state applicants so far. I just wish that the admissions office would tell us if we have any shot of hearing back before March. That is such a long time.

OOS students do not participate in the TMDSAS match so likely not the case. Also, most applicants end up matriculating to a school they did not hold an acceptance to before Match day so it really is not over for any IS applicant until Match day (or much later if you have been waitlisted).

Thank you both for the insight. I only applied within Texas so I'm glad you both shared your perspectives so I can learn more about the process.

Will someone who attends the next interview ask when OOS applicants can potentially expect decisions?

Their website has very limited information and they haven't responded to an email. I understand that they may not be able to give everyone an exact date, but I have heard absolutely no estimate for any OOS applicant and have no heard of any OOS people getting accepted this cycle. This is despite some OOS acceptances rolling out in October and early November of the last cycle.

The class ahead of you will create the Facebook page, as our beloved wysdoc mentioned, on/after the match day. They’ll send out an email to u so keep an eye out for that.

Interviewed yesterday and the experience was great! TTUHSC does a phenomenal job at creating a calm and laidback environment and they're really good at answering any questions you may have. The staff is so supportive and the interviewers are beyond sweet! They really go the extra mile to make you feel comfortable and to not come off as scary or intimidating. Good luck to everyone!

Did they tell you anything about when you can expect to hear back? I know IS has pre-match and the match, but they haven't told us OOS anything.

So do they typically prematch the higher stat applicants and then later match the majority of normies?
Yep, at least from what I've heard that is the case. I think it's because they know higher stat applicants will get multiple acceptances and some of them will deny the acceptance, which in turn opens more spots for those they actually want to match on match day

Ah interesting! Thanks for explaining this! You've helped calm my nerves a bit 🙂

This makes so much sense and makes my low-stat self feel a little more secure

Does anyone know how often prematches are sent?
They told us on my interview day (early November) that the admissions committee met on Nov 12th to decide on applicant rankings for prematchs. They said anyone who interviewed before that could hear back after Nov 12th up until Jan 31st.
Edit: Also read somewhere that they prematch around 25% of their class (idk how true that is tho so dont take my word for it)

Did they say anything about OOS?

Did they say anything about OOS?
I think an OOS applicant asked about that & from what I remember I think they said most OOS acceptances go out on or after TX match day in March. Again, dont quote me on this. I think they also mentioned OOS can get an acceptance before the Match since OOS doesn't participate in the match. Keep in mind they can fill up to 10% of their seats for OOS applicants. Its a long wait, but we have to trust the process! 🙂

What constitutes a worthy update?

@wysdoc
Send them your Fall term grades when they are final
Add news about research publications if any, or awards.
If you feel your total application lacked in one area (like shadowing or clinical volunteering), but now you have some, include that.
Say one thing you like about the school.

If you have no new things except your grades, just send those.
Saying you have more hours in activities they already know about won't add anything to your app.

The doc has great advice and knows more than me. I let them know I started working at a clinic and explained my position since it was a position created for me. I also explained how I started volunteering (finally) after much search.

I graduated already (nontrad) so not much to update on grades.

Would I send fall grades by sending my transcript if TMDSAS hasn't requested transcripts? Or can I send an unofficial transcript via email? I guess I can also update my grades on TMDSAS too

TMDSAS only requests transcripts from admitted students so you only need to send an updated transcript if you need to update a transcript they previously requested of you.

You can definitely updated your grades on the TMDSAS course work section or send an unofficial grade report to schools individually. If you update TMDSAS course work section, all TMDSAS will get notification of updated grades.

Hey everyone,
I posted this a while ago in this thread, but wanted to put the offer back out there since its been a while. I am currently a 2nd year masters student here at TTUHSC (We do most of the 1st year with the med students & then the 2nd year we TA the MS1s). If you have any questions about Lubbock, Tech, or anything else feel free to reach out to me! If I don't know the answer I can reach out to some of my friends here who might know. I am so excited to hopefully meet y'all during spring training this year 🙂!

Texas-Tech El Paso has this on their secondary portal. Does anyone know if these are also applicable to Lubbock and if OOS can no longer receive acceptances after 12/31?

El Paso's dates for prematch & interview period are wrong on their portal. The booklet they send in the mail when you interview has the real dates of prematch from Oct-Jan31st. They interview into feb.

An OOS applicant could get an admissions offer any time between October 15th 2020 and the start of orientation for the school in July/Aug 2021.
Our TX match dates don't apply to you.
And yes those dates quoted above have not been updated for our COVID-19 cycle.
TX residents could get a prematch offer until Jan 31, 2021.
