2020-2021 Toledo

Is anyone who interviewed on March 12 still waiting to hear back?
I interviewed on March 2nd and nothing so far. You're not alone man. They told a few of us that we would hear within two weeks. If they are true to that, then we should hear back no later than Tuesday.

Wishing for As for everyone!

Thanks I sent the update last night though. Should I send a 3rd one?
Looks like next week's probably the last week they'll be sending out IIs (given that someone just now got a II for May 5th, and said the last dates are May 11), so maybe send it first thing monday morning as a reply to your recent update. Just shoot your final shot, don't worry about sending too many updates at this point.

You can be like: "I once again would like to reiterate why I believe Toledo is my current number one choice for medical school because:..."

Good luck!

II!!!! Scheduled for May 5th. Available dates were May 4,5, and 11th. I cannot believe it. So excited! There's still hope, fam.
Were these the last available dates or the only ones you were allowed to schedule for?

Thanks it does look like a nice school so I'll send that last hail mary.

Wow if that’s the case I interviewed on March 23 and it will be a month next Tuesday. So I probably won’t be hearing back till April end or May first week.

I'm hoping that, since they're getting later into the interview cycle, everyone will start hearing back sooner. My guess is that they wanted to interview a lot of people before making definitive decisions. Now that they have a larger pool of interviewed applicants, they may potentially provide results sooner for individuals interviewed at later dates.

I'm literally guessing though so who knows.

But some people from dates later than mine have already heard back, so you could be receiving an email at any time.

Hey could I pm you the letter of interest to look at it before I send it tomorrow?

Yeah for sure! And my DMs are open to anyone else who wants to ask anything else about Toledo
Thanks I went back and read your post and I really would like to go there since they are p/f and have a good mission statement

Are they true P/F , so no hidden rankings at all ? With Step 1 also going to P/F, I thought class rankings would mean more...

Nope, no hidden rankings at all, no mention in the final dean's letter that summarizes your 4 year performance. I was worried about this point so I asked directly to both the dean and vice-dean of student affairs and they confirmed it.

And that's a great point, I think it's important to address it comprehensively below. So I had the same thought too. It's undeniable that now there is a shift to other factors in your app since step 1 is pass/fail. And it makes sense to see class rankings as one of the more important things. However, we have to look at the risk/benefit ratio here. Just because there is a benefit to keeping class rankings doesn't necessarily mean that it's a good option.

So let's dive into this a bit more:
  • The first obvious con for maintaining rankings is inter-class competition. Elimination of rankings will not only reduce gunner-ish behavior, but will actively also promote cooperation as I've experienced myself. You actually WANT to help others and there isn't that voice in the back of your mind saying, "But they might cause me to drop in rankings if I share this". And other classmates will feel the same way as well, meaning they actually want to help you too. It seems horrible to be stuck 4 years with others who you see as competition and who see you as competition.
  • Without class rankings, there is also more time to spend to do research, ECs, network. If you want to remain in the 1st quartile, you are going to have to study at least 2 hours more per day than the average student to cover all the taught minutiae. That time can be used to do research, ECs, network which I think are more significant factors to increasing your candidacy compared to class ranking. Even if we have rankings, it'll be a small one line in the dean's letter that will be glossed over in favor of your research, ECs, etc. What would you prefer? "1st quartile, 1 pub" vs "3rd quartile, 5 pubs"?
  • "But if I'm 3rd quartile it means I'm not keeping up for the boards! I much prefer having good steps and minimal pubs than mediocre steps and a high amount of pubs"
  • Well, great point. But just because you're a first quartile in class doesn't necessarily translate to good boards. I know several M4s actually who were scoring way above average in their preclinicals, thus overestimated their abilities come step and ended up with 220s and 230s. This leads to my next (and most important) point...
  • Flexibility. You can study using high yield board materials without feeling guilty that you're dropping in rankings. This is what I did. I don't even watch lectures anymore, I just skim over the learning objectives and key slides to make sure I'm on track. Most of the time I just study using pathoma, question banks, sketchy, B&B, etc. Not only is this done in a fraction of the time necessary to go through lectures, but it's more engaging and fun tbh (Who wants to wake up to 4 hours of lectures in their backlog to watch?). I do slightly above average on exams and quizzes still (around 2nd quartile), but when time comes for what really counts (for the end-of-semester NBMEs) I was fortunate to have scored in the 88th percentile for our class (which translates to a 254 for step purposes) and that's beyond good enough. So you're not doing a disservice to yourself if you don't remain in the top quartiles of your class IF you study the correct way, and the correct way is the way that's tailored to your steps instead of your in-house exams.
  • In-house exams test on what is taught in class, as the name suggests. This doesn't necessarily correlate with what is focused in your steps. Make that mental distinction early and you're able to have your cake and eat it too (as in get good steps, while still having the time to be productive in pubs/ECs/etc.). And this is made much easier if you don't have class rankings.
So in summary, I agree that keeping class rankings can provide that bit of edge come residency application. But honestly, when choosing between class rankings vs no class rankings, the lesser of two evils (and by a significant margin) I believe is having no class rankings.

Edit: I suppose this brings up the question/concern, "How can I do research then at Toledo, especially since Toledo isn't a major research powerhouse?". Well, read through this if you havent: 2020-2021 Toledo. And if people want a more in depth guide specifically for Toledo research I can write one up.

So if class rankings are not considered at all, how does one obtain a strong LOR? i.e. What things do you have to focus on?

LORs really don't come into play until M3 years. It's really not like undergrad where you have to reach out to the lecturers that taught you in class to get their LORs. Residency programs don't really care about that, instead, they care more about how well do you function in a clinical setting. And that's something that can only be assessed in your M3 and early M4 years. So don't worry about that for the next 2 years.

The more urgent thing that you can do as a UT student in your preclinical years if you want to boost your residency application is: research, network, and have interesting/personal ECs. Opportunities to pursue these three things will be more open as step 1 is p/f now and you don't have to work as hard as your upperclassmen on steps.

Any point in sending a 3rd update? No idea if they will be sending out any more II's

Waitlisted today. Interviewed 3/16. Best of luck to everyone else.
Don't worry. Keep them updated about your intent, I'm expecting there will be a big wave of acceptances from the waitlist just like last year. Many others and I got in this way.

Received an interview on 4/16, scheduled for 5/4. It seems a little late for interviews?? Anyone else have anything similar here or at other schools? OOS, no ties.

Waitlisted today. Interviewed on 3/2. Wishing the best for everyone else who is waiting.
Good luck on the waitlist! I'm just curious, what time did you receive the email? I interviewed on 3/19 and I'm patiently waiting for any email.
