2020-2021 University of Washington

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I think it's because they're regional and each state has to handle theirs separate. I don't doubt that there could be a technical solution (such as everyone uploads to a portal that processes them and sends it to the right office), but it could also run in to potential legal questions, such as are Washington state employees (remember UW employees are state employees) allowed to have access to personal data from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming applicants?
Ah, yeah, that makes sense!

OOS here. Received an email today about my status saying that they have received my primary app and they will be doing a review soon that will take 2-3 weeks. I have strong ties to WA-- grew up there, graduated from HS there, my permanent address is there. I'm taking this as good news!

MD, OOS - got an email asking me to write an essay about how I meet their mission statement.

I have no ties to this school or its regions, but I loved its mission. I just received an email saying they reviewed my app, and based on my experiences, “they invite me to write a short statement on how I fit their mission.” They say this isn’t a secondary. Is this the norm for everybody? It seems like people are just getting secondaries

+1! Got this message today! LM 70 OOR

Oddly enough, the prompt just askes about your experiences with underserved populations. There is also an optional disadvantaged essay, and they mention you can literally use exactly what you put on AMCAS.

OOS applicant. Received this last night:

"Thank you for applying to the University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSOM)! We have received your AMCAS application, and conducted a preliminary review of your materials. In order to continue in our process, you will need to take CASPer, a situational judgement test. If you have already taken CASPer, make sure that your score will be released to the UWSOM. It can take about 3 weeks for the score to become available to schools."

Recently sat for the CASPer so hopefully a secondary is on the way soon.

You may have already gotten this (not sure when CASPER is required) , but they do a "how do you fit our mission" and then will review that before sending a secondary if you're OOR

+4 on this. My residency is not super straightforward since I went to school out of state so I'm wondering if they are putting the more complicated people later? Idk

+5. I don't think so. I have had 18 years of continuous residence in WA and still have not heard anything for over a week despite the email saying "Hopefully tomorrow" 🤣

No email but the secondary is available via my portal

Incoming MS1 at UWSOM. If anyone has questions about the cycle, I am happy to help answer any questions!
Hello, I have a question about the secondary. What’s meant by this? —“ Please use this space to supplement your AMCAS Personal Comments. (MSTP will consider information provided here as well as your AMCAS Personal Comments)”

Is the request for verification separate from that residency history form? I received a secondary but not anything else

About the trust program.

So there is the normal UW cohort. Are TRUST students part of the normal cohort, or are they another separate cohort? (i.e. are there extra seats in addition to the normal UW seats, specifically reserved for TRUST students)

The way I understand it, the TRUST program involves
  1. 1-2 weeks in a summer experience before you begin Foundations courses
  2. Return to your continuity community
  3. Complete one or more selective courses or events during each term of the Foundation Phase with a focus on underserved rural or underserved small city practice
  4. Return to your TRUST continuity community for two other key continuity experiences:
    • Participate in our Rural Underserved Opportunities Program (RUOP), a one-month program during the summer months of your Foundation Phase
    • Participate in WWAMI Rural Integrated Training Experience (WRITE) during 18+ weeks of the Patient Care Phase of your medical school training.
So does the extra time involved with TRUST mean students will have to cough up more $?

"TRUST Scholars will generally choose a primary care specialty (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine or Pediatrics). However, other specialties with physician workforce shortages lend themselves to underserved practices, such as: General Surgery, OB/Gyn, Psychiatry, etc. In general, participating in TRUST will be advantageous preparation for students entering most specialties." So I get that TRUST students don't have to do Primary Care, but does enrolling in TRUST bar students from specializing in ortho, derm, ophth, and cardiology or specialties that are not among "physician workforce shortages?"

Also does enrolling in TRUST, just offer more rural/underserved opportunities for medical students while in school, or does it guarantee specific specialties after medical school? Do TRUST students still do the match and then get into the residency that they want if qualified (like dermatology for example)? If so, how does TRUST ensure that students will serve in rural/underserved areas? Is there a contract for this?

And if UW does require that students go into one of a certain set of residencies, what is the advantage of TRUST over the regular program (I have heard that regular students still have access to WRITE).

It's a "Anything you would like the MSTP admissions counselors to know about why you want to apply to MSTP" question. You can expand on why MSTP, or add something else like a diversity or adversity statement.

has anyone who had to do the verification of legal residence been able to create a UW NetID? it says to submit the residency packet via the web portal but you need a UW NetID and i don't have the info to create one through the link that's given.

Any non-trads out there submit the residency verification paperwork but did not include a parental tax return or affidavit stating your financial independence? I haven't been a dependent of theirs for years now and saw in some places (UW website, part of the form we submit) the age of 24/25 being the line where you no longer need this piece. I emailed their office but know how swamped they must be right now.

I'm in my mid-thirties. They legally cannot claim me even if I wanted them to. UW's residency clarification office is VERY strict, though. Any extra mile you can go now....do it. I am having my folks send a notarized letter verifying I am not, have not for over a decade, and will not be dependent on their federal IRS in the future.

For independent WA residents: I cannot stress this enough. BE AS THOROUGH AS POSSIBLE. They will send your application back with questions about items not even listed in the request form (ie i'm including WA ESD unemployment benefits even though its not requested and last year I was requested to give a backlog of bank statements in addition to my financial aid documents to verify that I paid for college myself). There is a 2-3 week turnaround for initial review, if they request additional documents, it takes another 2-3 weeks. This seriously delayed my (and many others) application last year. If something doesn't feel completely airtight, include documentation, notarized statements, whatever you may need to ensure it's locked up on the first attempt.

Yikes, that is thorough! Thanks for the heads up! If you don't mind my asking, do you think they asked for your college finances because you paid for it by yourself? My folks are extremely private and already reacted very poorly to my asking for their tax return/an affidavit. I had to guesstimate a lot of my childhood/college finances on my primary because they have a severe aversion to discussing money...

Do you know approx how many people need to verify? I did not receive a request for verification so Im wondering if that means I got skipped for that, or if they are gonna have me verify later or something

I am also wondering this

Idaho residency verified email yesterday and UW complete email this morning! I've been pretty bummed about no interviews so far, but at least I don't have to jump through any extra residency hoops. I am right at the 8 year mark after my high school graduation, so this is pretty good news!

47 Primaries? Respect. And also RIP my friend.

Can I just say you're awesome for being able to do 45+ secondaries and stay optimistic? 🙂

On an entire other note, bless UW's transparency on when interview scheduling would happen if it was for the 2021 cycle x.x

If you're over 26, you can try submitting without the notarized letter. I can't imagine they could dispute this because in the eyes of the IRS you'd be too old for your parents to claim as dependent. However, they want unexpected and obscure data. I had to send text message screenshots and gas records from when I moved to Seattle.

I recommend attaching a formal letter explaining any gaps you may have. The more info they have, the less likely they will be to request additional documents.

Not part of TRUST, but can hopefully try to answer some of your questions.

1. TRUST students are part of the regular cohort.

2. Not 100% sure on this...To my knowledge, no, they don't need to spend extra. Every student has to fulfill a research requirement called Independent Investigative Inquiry (III for short). TRUST students would fulfill their III by doing a RUOP. Every student is also required to do 6 core clerkships. WRITE would be a part of a TRUST student's core clerkships.

Not 100% sure on the special courses required, but I don't think they will cost extra-the curriculum budgets for some electives.

3. No, TRUST doesn't bar anyone seeking competitive specialties-from what I know, it actually makes you stand out in your residency applications. It's not like NHSC where you MUST go into primary care to qualify. A lot of people who do TRUST go into primary care, but doing TRUST doesn't pigeonhole you in terms of specialties.

4. The first part of what you said is correct. As TRUST, you have more opportunities to work in rural/underserved areas. You would do the match like any other student and then get into the residency you want if you qualified. I'm not sure how to answer your second question here-my guess is that there's self-selection involved for TRUST; you have an active interest in rural/underserved healthcare, (usually) would like to do some sort of primary care, and therefore apply.

5. There's no requirement on what kind of specialties you have to enter...Being a TRUST scholar is a distinguishment. As TRUST, you participate in extra experiences and opportunities that other students don't always get. Your medical education is more tailored for primary care/rural healthcare and if you get into TRUST, you come in with valuable rural experience too.

Yes, regular students go into WRITE. There are 40 spots for WRITE, with 32 reserved for TRUST students. The other 8 spots are open for regular students.

I have no idea. I'd give admissions a call. In last year's thread there were a bunch of folks that did not need to verify. I assume folks that are current residents, childhood address in WA, high school in WA, and parents current address in WA do not have to verify. It seems as if a lot of people (even that have lived in WA for many years) have to verify.

Well thanks! I honestly feel like I've been having a hard time. I'm just trying to find joy in the little things. The application cycle sucks, for real.

I’ve lived in WA my whole life other than 4 years in AZ for college. My parents live here, I currently live here, and I never switched my official residency to another state and I still had to verify residency

They're coming your way. Just email the schools youve applied to the link to the U-Mich SDN thread and show them the pure gold post you made of Michael Scott. Your inbox will flood with II!

I think all folks that went to school OOS have to submit. At least thats what I gathered from last year's thread.

This is probable true. Seems a little unnecessary to me though since my primary app lists a WA high school, a WA childhood residence, and a WA address for my parents and myself
