Every lab is going to vary tremendously by PI, team, subject matter, luck, etc. It can be a challenge to find the right fit for you at any institution sometimes. If those labs are already all in your main area of interest then it may be tough to find a better fit at UM, but if you're planning to pursue different avenues of research you might have better luck with different teams. I can't compare to UF or USF but I will say that overall there's lots of research opportunities here and myself and many of my classmates have been able to be very productive.

If it makes you feel any better, you can always fly to Miami and do it from a hotel room at 8 AM! :laugh:

This is how time zones work, and you should be extremely grateful, not only that you have the opportunity to interview, but that present circumstances allow you to avoid the inconvenience and expense of cross-country travel. A 3 hour time difference, at 5 in the morning, should honestly be the least of your concerns. JMHO, and good luck!!

I obviously know how time zones work. It's not too difficult to push back interviews a few hours to accommodate us. At the end of the day, they're also the ones who want to convince us to attend their programs.
I've had other east coast interviews that were more accommodating.

Are you familiar with the term "sellers' market"? They have already accommodated you by not forcing you to travel during a pandemic. Every school has not done this. At this stage of the proceedings, most schools, and certainly Miami, are a lot less concerned about your convenience than you apparently believe.

If attending a virtual interview at 5 AM is really such a burden, no one is forcing you to do it. I can see by your signature that you are fortunate enough to have other options.

I never said I'm not grateful or am not willing to do an interview at that time. But moreso just curious what's stopping them from pushing it back to 10 AM EST? Also just wanted to hear from others in a similar position.

It’s not really accommodating to not make us travel. It’s sort of the state of the world right now. I don’t see anything wrong with having a morning interview option an an afternoon option so that students have some flexibility. That said, there is definitely some truth to this, I would probably just go to bed early and wake up early to make the interview, especially if it’s one of your top schools. We’ll have wake up super early plenty of times on rotations so I mean why not have a little practice now I guess? 😂

Just search the term on SDN. Schools in general treat applicants like crap because they can. A market in which 60,000+ consumers are competing to be permitted to purchase one of approximately 22,000 US MD seats creates what is referred to as a sellers' market. Not moving an interview start time to accommodate people on the West Coast is a very mild manifestation of this. As I said, just search the site for much more egregious examples.

Nothing, other than they are generally inconsiderate of applicants, and they don't have to because they literally have several hundred equally qualified applicants who would happily agree to stay awake for two days straight for the opportunity to take your place. For the record, the Miami admissions office is notorious for being one of the most user unfriendly. It is what it is, and we all put up with it for the opportunity to be admitted to a pretty good school in a pretty awesome location.

Idk why you're making it such a big deal?? They just said it was annoying, not that they were going to throw away the whole interview all together

Dude what’s your deal? Person was just venting about something completely understandable. hopefully you’re not like this on the interview trail… I wouldn’t want someone who’s like this in my class. also, if you start med school you better get ready for a lot more complaining from your classmates. med students complain about the most asinine stuff

I honestly don't know what to tell you, other than that, as someone who is very grateful that I don't have to spend thousands of dollars and wake up at all hours of the night to travel to an airport to fly all over the country for interviews, I guess I was just venting, on behalf of the 93%+ of Miami applicants who are going to get to sleep in and never have an opportunity to interview for a spot in the class, about someone who applied to a school in a different time zone and was then annoyed that the administration didn't schedule its interview day around the desired sleep schedule of cross country applicants. 🙂

As I said before, the don't have the easiest admissions office to deal with, but it's a really good school in a really good location, and the people I know who go there are happy, so it's definitely worth putting up with whatever you have to in order to score the A.
 
I submitted my application by mid of Aug and my status is still
Your Application is currently under review by the Admissions Committee at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
I see people submitted after me and got interviews, does that mean my application will not reviewed? I was told that they can't review all submitted applications!

Submitted mid July and still under review.

I am an MS4 here that has done research in my desired speciality both in a gap year year at another FL medical school and here throughout medical school. The question to this entirely depends on factors like PI and department. All the schools you mention do good research. Feel free to reach out.
 
I have a feeling that many applicants will stay under review until the end of the cycle. Seems like they are one of the ‘never communicate and silent R’ schools.

It also seems that the timeline for UM is extremely variable and of the current students I’ve spoken to they all interviewed and were accepted towards the end of the cycle February-April despite being complete August-October
 
There may be higher attrition rates with earlier interviewers? Presumably they get higher scores and may have more options?

Don’t think it’s that because I’m somewhat high and haven’t been scored. Like I mentioned in an earlier post, I’m guessing that an individual or small group review app. If it makes the cut, it goes to adcom for scoring. If not, you stay under review. Don’t have inside info, but this is my hunch.

They send an itinerary laying out the whole structure the day before. It's a pretty standard interview day with a mix of info sessions and two one-on-one interviews.
 
I applied MD in July and want to now add a designation for MD-MPH. Would adding that send my MD application to the back of the queue? Or are MD and MD-MPH applications reviewed separately?
