2021-2022 UC Davis

Pre-II R yesterday! Guess it wasn't meant for me and that's okay. Sometimes rejection is just redirection.

Sending hugs to everyone else who got the R and also to those who got the A! Each and every one of you should be very proud of how far you have come. šŸ’›

@folks who interviewed - did y'all get the finaid documents email from admission today?

Did you think you did well post interview?
I thought I did well haha. But how Iā€™ve felt in my interviews and the results have been all over the place. At the MD I was accepted at, I walked out thinking I nailed it and got in. On the other hand I thought I bombed a DO interview and also got it. So who knows haha

Can anyone who interviewed w Davis let me know how bad the mmi was here? You didnā€™t have to give specifics at all I know you signed an NDA, just how stressful/painful it was. I got put on the interview waitlist and am not super excited by the idea that I might have 0-5 days notice to prepare for an mmi (never done one before). Thanks everyone :)
It wasn't too bad, just some personal questions and scenarios. It's stressful because of the time limit but most questions you answer before the time is up. It feels like the interview went on forever, but it was only like a little over an hour, I believe? You've got this!

Do you know why avg indebtness for UCD SOM and COA seem so different. Google says ~200k. But the email says ~75k/yr which would be closer to ~300k before interests

Because some people are offered scholarships thus leading to indebtedness going down. Additionally, some students have their tuition paid by their parents and thus the amount of debt they take on is lower.

what are everyone's thoughts on davis' ranking going down in the past few years? kinda shocked that the school went from ~T30 to T50 in just 3 years or so... with step 1 becoming p/f there will definitely be more emphasis on ranking too so it's kind of concerning

as far as i know they've implemented a new curriculum to primarily better prepare students for step 1 but as i mentioned, it'll be P/F anyway
does anyone know what else the school has done to amend that drop in ranking?

Was not aware. What usually causes ranking to decrease?

Just withdrew my application from Davis but I want to tell all of you, GOOD LUCK AND YOU WILL DO AMAZING! This is a rough road but you all got this!

In 2020, UC Davis had a low step 1 score (around 220) compared to the national average (around 232), yet a good portion of their class placed into strong PGY1 residencies:

24 UC Davis Med
11 UCLA
7 UCSF
4 Oregon H&S
3 U Washington
2 UCSD
1 Stanford
1 NYU
1 Cedars-Sinai
1 USC

ā€¦.and others that I am not aware of. It seems like UC Davis does a good job of helping their students get into well-respected residencies.

Also, there are many arguably more important factors going into residency admission like Step 2 scores, recommendation letters, the personal statement, clerkship grades, and the interview, so I think a drop in tiers is a trivial setback in your candidacy. I know UC Davis prestige is no Harvard prestige, especially at a national perspective, but there is more to an applicant than just their school name. In the grand scheme of things, I say don't worry too much about school tiers and worry more about your abilities as a doctor.

Where were you in the process? Completed interview? Or pre-II?

Very valid points; thank you for your thoughts.
I agree that the 2020 match list included some very solid institutions. I also agree that candidacy relies on different variables and not just school ranking. However, I think it would be amiss to say that even with Step 1 becoming P/F, the weight of a school's ranking on a residency application remains unchanged. Most physicians, medical students, even some advisors I've spoken with have agreed that the loss of one major quantitative factor (Step 1) will shift the weight to another quantitative factor (ranking, research, etc). This may not play as huge of a role in primary care, but there is reason to consider its impact in competitive specialties.

Just based on their public match-list trends, when Davis had a higher ranking (2018, T30 --> 2019 #40), there was more variability and a greater number of matches in competitive specialties compared to 2020 (#48) Their ability to match at well-respected institutions for primary care has not been affected. Specialties, though... arguably has.

However, now at #48, I am curious as to how it'll be once new classes with Step 1 P/F will fare when the time comes to match and Davis' ranking is not improved or potentially worsens. I wish for more transparency in what Davis is currently doing to improve itself, and I believe prospective candidates have the same sentiment and right to know. We're invested and all the more curious as to how Davis will recover from this trend and grow overall. It is still a really fantastic school, and I believe they have the potential to be on par with more prestigious CA schools like UCLA/USC. Yet, given how Step 1 will be P/F in 2022, likely increased emphasis on ranking, and generally increased competitiveness for matching it's important to know what they plan to do.

TL;DR -- I agree with you. Ranking is not everything, but Step 1 P/F will shift emphasis to another quantitative variable (ranking). Davis has demonstrated continuous decline and it is unclear what concrete steps they are taking to recover (other than a new curriculum which we don't know how effective it is yet). Prospectives should be aware of both this as well as the school's plan of action.

Was not aware. What usually causes ranking to decrease?
Honestly, not entirely sure but at least based on US News Methodology it's a mix of
- residency director assessments
- peer assessments
- research funding and research
- overall competitiveness
etc.

So not sure exactly what affected Davis and can't seem to find anything definitive besides Step 1 average

What did admissions say when you emailed them? Could you email them if not? Did they say besides new curriculum, x, y, z?

Accepted at higher ranking school? Or why no on Davis?
I was accepted at another UC Iā€™m more inclined to go to than Davis. Although Iā€™ve withdrawn from pretty much all of my OOS acceptances, Iā€™m now trying to withdraw from some of my IS ones and narrow it down to hopefully not take up spots that could go to other students.

you are more than welcome to email them
Oh you are too since you seem more aware and curious of all this. You started the discussion on the ranking and lack of transparency on UCD. Before you mentioned it, didn't even know UCD dropped in rankings and to that extent.

Congrats on the multiple acceptances and thank you for doing that unlike the other hoarders.

if you'd like more answers after i've provided the information that I have, then it would be more beneficial for you to reach out to UCD rather than ask me to do so on your behalf.

Nah I have enough information now
