2022-2023 Iowa (Carver)

Do they send out IIs/Rs in batches? It seems like people have been receiving responses pretty much exactly 1 month after submitting secondaries. It's definitely been longer than that for me and I'm not quite sure what to make of that.

Can any students here speak on how frequent exams are? I know some schools are weekly or biweekly, is that the case here?

Its variable especially at the beginning of the semester, but once things start moving expect to have an MOHD/Foundations exam every other Friday and then CAPS/MAS exams on the Fridays in between. I think there was about 8 weeks in a row during first semester that you have an exam every week (because you also have Anatomy exams). Second and third semesters tend to have more weeks without an exam.

II just now! The timing of their invites seems kind of arbitrary doesn't it? Doesn't seem to come in waves or batches like other schools.
When did you submit your secondary? Mine was submitted Monday, October 17. Still waiting ...

Interviewed late October and they said they’d get back in 4-6 weeks from my interview date. Best of luck to everyone. Hoping to hear back soon!

Any advice for the interview from those who got the A or already interviewed? Interviewing this week!
Like most have said, everyone there that I met was extremely nice (faculty, residents, medical students, and other applicants). They really want to see how you work and interact with others. As far as the interviews go, the doctors that interviewed me were extremely nice - and truly are trying to get to know you. Be ready to tell them about yourself - I took the approach of explaining who I am outside of medicine. Then they ask three "structured" questions. Be ready to explain "why medicine" and possibly a scenario-based situation. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer because we're not doctors yet, and from my understanding, they are trying to see how you think through a problem and consider the stakeholders, and pros/cons etc (at least that's the approach I've taken with traditional and mmi scenario based questions). Hope this helps, and good luck!!

Thanks for posting this. Have mine coming up soon. Excited and a lil nervous (as usual). Iowa has been so dang impressive. Pen pal, dinner prior to, pre interview packet. They also were my first interview. Pretty nice 😎 lol

I didn’t get any of that stuff 😢

I interviewed in early September and haven't heard anything post-II. I see most people who have posted their A's these past couple of weeks have been late Sept-early Oct, at this point should I consider this a soft R? I remember the admissions person at my interview said we would hear back in ~4-6 weeks and it's almost 8 weeks for me now.

I’m in the same boat, wondering the same thing

+1 interviewed late Sept and the wait is agonizing

The final pool of applicants, they go back later and re-review us to accept, reject, or waitlist
Ahh, so they don't rollover our apps to the next review session and so forth? They'll put us aside and review everyone put aside at one time? Do you know when that would be?

So this is my second time applying to Carver and I may be able to ease some worries. First, the time frame they give you is really just an estimate. They tell everyone the same number but in truth, people have heard as soon as 2 weeks after their interview and many others have to wait months. If you haven’t heard anything it’s not necessarily an R as not hearing just means they haven't made a decision on you yet. In January, everyone that hasn’t heard will either be accepted, rejected, or put in the final pool which means you have to wait until March 15th to know if you’re accepted, rejected, or on the waitlist. I myself was in your boat of having to wait months just to be final pooled but a friend of mine got accepted months after his interview so don’t give up hope!

Well I’m not sure how they decide who/when to accept people or put them in the final pool, I just know that they eventually tell us if we are being put in the final pool to revisit our apps at a later date

This is a much better explanation than I could offer 😂 thank you!

Can anyone else not get a single thing done at work during this whole process?! The wait is killing me

Only good thing about Iowa is that they usually only make decisions on Tuesday so I’m not glued to my phone waiting for them the entire week . Now other schools on the other hand…..

Loaded Question (s): After the interview, I know the admissions committee doesn't review applications in chronological order so I was wondering how do they initially pick and choose how they fill up their seats in the rolling phase? Somewhat curious if they have "encountered" my application at this time point if its been awhile after your interview or if it's completely at random. Also, if you interviewed in September and haven't heard back within a few weeks does that automatically mean you are going to get an R or final pooled and they have already made that "encounter" with your application reading it? Another question: If you are in-state and get that automatic interview for a 505+ MCAT does the committee even read your application prior to the interview like your LORs/EC's/PS? Any feedback or thoughts are appreciated!

Every school orders the applications differently based on different factors. I would guess stats are a big factor and they prob prioritize IS.

They said 6 weeks is the average but again, it varies by where they place your app in the pile. I’ve heard that some hear within a few weeks and others hear months later. If I recall correctly, they will let you know whether you are A, R, or final pool once they get to yours. So my guess is that they just have not gotten to your app.

I can’t answer the last one for sure, only speculate, but I’m sure they look over your application. Not that it really matters, since the interviews themselves are blinded.

Super helpful, thank you! I have honestly also wondered how they place your app in the pile? Kind of wondering if it is based on MCAT/GPA, URM/First Gen/Disadvantaged etc.
