2022-2023 UT Tyler

The real issue is that you are picking a date that makes you ineligible for first prematches that are announced on October 15th.
Yeah that’s a fair point, but I doubt this school even sends very many prematch offers. They might send like 10 considering their class size is so small. Also they may take an approach like Baylor and not even send the first waves until November.
TBH, even interviewing shortly before pre-match day doesn't assure that they will have discussed your interview day by October 15th.
I think TX applicants put way too much pressure on themselves about a pre-match offer.
And I agree. I would like a prematch just so it can relieve stress, but most the people I actually know at Texas schools didn’t even hear back till March so it’s not something that worries me very much.

I wanted to schedule mine asap but only dates available when I logged in was in November and afterwards. I was a little bummed about it
Holy cow that’s insane, I wonder how many IIs they’ve already sent out.

I guess if we use U of H as an example (similar class size initially) they’re probably only planning on interviewing maybe 300 applicants so not many interview spots at this school as compared to other Texas schools.

No one knows since this is their first year. You might be the high end of the local recruits for stats so I see you as having the best shot for a prematch. Since the early dates are no longer available, it might be a moot point.

People should choose the earliest date available as far as possible because it gives them most opportunities to be in the different match pools if a school releases prematches every few weeks. This is basic advise I would give everyone.

Wondering what the Casper quartiles have been for those who have received IIs thus far if anyone is willing to share

if there's any students who go to undergrad here and want to do some mock interviews together to prep, dm me! I can't believe I'm only a week and a half out.

Seems like there were a few days of very quick movement through the apps and then like no movement. Not to be a drag, but does this indicate that they are relatively full up interview-wise? Anyone hear anything from the no-II side of things? Last I saw the earliest slots were November and they only interview until January, so that's the only reason I'm getting a little worried.

Nothing here, and submitted same week secondary was received ~week after TMDSAS for it opened. Being a small class size, I’d imagine they will interview less than other schools. But assuming possibly a 10-1 interview-acceptance, I would think many more IIs will be going out. I guess it’ll just be a long painful waiting game for us.

Interviews start next week, so I'm sure there will be movement as they interview 🙂 I'm sure they want to extend prematch offers to those who really fit that mission, so they're being prioritized. Everyone I know who has an II (myself included) has a realllyyy strong mission and area fit.

The schools have a preset number they will interview each year and UT Tyler will do the same (may be fewer or too many this year depending on which side they want to err).

So even if they find lots of people they like in the early rounds, they want to ensure they complete the expected number of interviews and they wont close in November claiming they have enough good candidates or they wont decide to interview more because they only had bad candidates!

Well, thank you guys for quelling my pre-med neuroticism monster. Tbf, my backstory is a confusing one with moving around a lot for military reasons, but being a TX resident all the same and being from NE TX (my HS even played Tyler in a few varsity games, it's a less than 2-hour drive from where my resident address is). But I was very worried that it would hurt me that my rural med experience working in clinics was in other states than my resident state. I pre-wrote my secondaries and submitted them as soon as I could. The waiting game is a tough one! I just love this school's mission and the chance to go back home for good. But I don't know anyone else going the TMDSAS route so I wasn't sure what timeline is the most normal, especially for the smaller programs.

Sounds like your on the right track. You’ve got a unique background and if your able to convey that you are looking to stay in ETX after medical school, that’s a big focus that they’re looking for in applicants.

10-1 interview acceptance seems very low, but I do agree that many more IIs are to be sent out.

Thank you, Whimsy. As they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder. The idea of moving around, at this point, is the worst part of a medical career to me now haha Everyone discussing prematch and such had me thinking the ship had sailed. Good to know that things are still moving as time goes on.

I have a family friend that is on faculty for UTT SOM and they just started extending interviews in the past 3 weeks and they emphasized that there are still many more II’s to come with the high volume of applications they’ve received. With such a strong mission focus, I think locals are just easier to identify and extend II’s to since many locals have letters, research, shadowing experience, etc with the faculty and hospital system here. They’ve already had thousands of applicants so it’ll take some time as a new school also configuring the application cycle.
I second this. They have been extremely intentional about making themselves known to the undergrad premeds, and many of us have met admissions faculty.
Right. What is the class size? I would say 6 to 7 times.
40. So 240-280?

That's what it sounded like to me. They said they were probably going to end up interviewing a higher number of candidates so unfortunately even after getting an II it will still be pretty competitive to get one of the 40 spots.
Exactly why I was thinking 10x. Because even with having such a small class size, I’d imagine there’s going to be quite a bit of competition for those spots.

In theory, schools admit more people than 40 because they have to worry about yield. Schools like UTMB may admit 400+ students after interviewing almost 1000 students and end up with the right class size of 220+ (there will be some JAMP admits etc to fill the rest). A&M over admitted by 50 people in 2021 and had to request many to take a deferral. So it all depends on whether UTT will admit 80 or admit far fewer knowing they will stay in the region due to regional ties.

I also imagine UTT will have to be very strict about the 40 rule because they absolutely cannot go over. I am willing to bet they will be very conservative with prematch offers.

Also, as a side note it never made sense to me how a Texas school over admits students. I always felt like the match negated that possibility.

No, schools with prior experience have numbers that tell them how many they lose during match which is why they overadmit. Otherwise no school will do prematches if they need to be exact so everyone can be picked based on their preference of school vs having multiple admissions and seeing if anyone gives them money and if not choose prestige.

In my opinion: some of the extreme over-acceptance events have been due to someone thinking they can do better than to go by past precedents, or decisions being made based on incomplete or inaccurate information.
Subsequent years will have an over-cautious offer pattern until the numbers are normalized.
If I ran an admissions team I would not over-admit for the match, and would fill gaps created through losses with my WL.

2 sessions a day, so 24ish total. UTT Prehealth Advisor shared that number with a friend. I can verify after my interview, though!
Interesting, that is a very small number! If that is true UTT is only interviewing 240 people this year

I wonder how many people will rank high and take an acceptance at UTT over other schools strictly because of the tuition scholarship.

It is surprising they have not had a medical school until now. I noticed they have fellowships and people are discussing applying to cardiology.

And given the fact that it is in the UT system with a well established hospital network, this school doesn't really pose any risk. I think it will be a phenomenal opportunity
That is true! I know most people are hesitant towards new medical schools, but with Tyler being part of the UT system, I completely agree with you.

Just a heads up to anyone traveling: they have a Meet and Greet the evening before! They just emailed me about it 🙂
Ah man, that means I’m gonna have to get a hotel room. I live an hour away and was just planning on driving up the morning of but that won’t make sense now. Do you know what time the evening event starts at if you don’t mind me asking so I can plan ahead of time?

5:30-7 pm

interview day was awesome. y’all are gonna fall in love with this school.

insight:
140-160 interviews
prematches in december
MMI questions are true MMI, no “why medicine”
They're only doing 140-160 interviews in total? Wow that's insane! Also great to hear about prematches in December. That means interviewing even in October/November won't have much of an impact.

And I really appreciate the insight. I hope you did amazing!

so at least a 25% post interview acceptance rate!

they also noted today that they’ve extended enough IIs to get them to december
