2022-2023 UT Tyler

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From the TMDAS live they say they are open to both OOS and out of region TX residents, as long as they can demostrate genuine interest and commitment to pratice on EXT, that said for anyone OOS then they might be looking for HIGHER stats/ECs than the regular pool to balance things out. At least thats the case in most OOS unfriendly schools.

OOS No secondary have ties and special interest on EXT texas, really want this school to thrive....

Now tell us how many of those three you're interviewing at 😉 You're killing it this year
Haha I appreciate it! I've been very happy this cycle so far especially after not getting in last year. I love all the schools I have interviews with so if I can get at least one A I'd be so happy!

Just got the email about the Meet and Greet for this school this morning and I'm really excited to check out the campus and everyone there

Let me know if you have any questions!

I only have relatives in East Texas and went there to visit them several time. Do y’all think I can get II? Submitted my secondary in 8/15 fyi

if I have to guess, they're now moving on to people not from East Texas but who fit the mission statement.
Thank you. I emailed them asking about how my app goes and they’ve just responded to me asking if I have any ties to East Texas that weren’t mentioned in the primary app

II today. Never been to East Texas but have a primary care focused app. Shocked would be an understatement.
Would you mind sharing LizzyM or stats? Wondering if they are still primarily focused on mission moving further out from ETX or if they’re looking at higher stat applicants?

I sent an email to the UT Tyler SOM email account because I had an update about ties to East Texas that I wanted to ask about. Does anyone know how long the average turn around time is for email response ? Just curious.

I’ve only emailed them once but it took like 2 days I believe

Does any one have info on the school grade system? Pass/Fail/Honors / letter grade etc?

For those who went to the meet and greet the day before the interview, did y'all dress business casual?

Any OOS here who got an interview?

I am OOS strong ties, got a secondary but after radio silence.

On my interview day, I met one student not from Texas, but I think they ended up moving for school (but not from ETX).

So they are from texas and just left the state for school? also which week day was your interview ? is it always on the same day? Thank you.

Anyone submitted/completed application later and still happened to get an interview ? (Submitted in October ).

Also do y’all think they actually do not look at academic things after we pass the initial requirement check or that’s a lie probably ?
They group us by different stat ranges but then are blinded and are using a metric that predicts 95%> chance of finishing medical school according to a doc I talked to on adcom.

What does it mean by being out into different groups? If high stat applicants are in Group A, for example, wouldn’t there still be bias and they’d be more likely to accept applicants from that group?

Thank you for your response. Does the prediction involve stats or does it include other things on our application like our essays ? If the prediction is based on our stat ranges doesn’t that mean it is essentially based on the stats ?
There’s no way ECs can predict likelihood to graduate from medical school (as it would be very difficult to collect data on that). Stats are a lot easier and there’s a ton of published data on it. Typically if you score an MCAT between 502-505 there’s a ~95% chance you’ll graduate school on time, and higher there’s a 98% chance. When you couple it with GPA is becomes even more accurate (I’m not sure what those numbers are tho).

As you can see tho, the stat requirement to have a 95% likelihood you’ll graduate is actually pretty low. So if this is true then that means stats will have little weight post II.

However, if we get put into different groups based on stats I feel like there will still be some bias.

I think they mentioned grouping students based on GPA, MCAT, Casper, Connection to ETX, and mission in their TMDSAS Q&A. So I would agree that those students in Group A would likely have higher chances, but it may not be on stats alone.

For the given explanination by the dean, the groups are not STATs based as in MCAT and GPA, but based on what did you do as undegrad, your experience, ties to EXT, and Casper scores.

So just to make sure the different groups are based on a multitude of factors including stats, or stats are not included at all?

For what @whimsymed mentioned tho, I only know of predicting student pass rate based on MCAT/GPA so I believe that has to be involved to a certain extent. Still tho I believe what you said is the most likely method as having ties to ETX and mission fit will be extremely important

Stats are definitely included in the initial groupings from what I have gathered, but not sure how stats or groupings play into post-interview admissions decisions.

Yeah that makes sense... this process is a lot more nuanced than I can imagine! I do not envy being an adcom lol

MCAT and GPA are not the only factor. The value of the MCAT score is singnificantly reduced if you have been out of college for 2 or more years before taking the test. For this reason they will also look at other factors. For example how hard was your undergrad curriculum, do you have a graduate Degree ? how much do you really know about the pratice of medicine based on your ECs and also wether you are trully interested in a Rural med path that will serve EXT in the long run. etc etc. Based on the narrative they use a kid with a 525 MCAT and a 499 MCAT could both be in group A if all else is a good fit, and they have a hight MATCH Duet from the casper. is trully holistic. They set the MCAT GPA cut off ( Dean's words ) low to give consideration to kids who might have struggle freshman etc being first generation etc, But show promise later on their academics. So the extend that stats are included are not hard cut off in the traditional sense and not the single factor that place someone in group X...... is not like UT SOUTHWESTERN. is more like their group 2 broken by mission fit.
