2022-2023 UT Tyler

Hey anyone that wants to harbor hope, good for them, but that hope needs to be realistic, because any reapplication actions need to start now.
Completely Agree. If you know what went wrong....Got Promised Acceptances (GPA) and it did not happen,MCAT Scratch Fever, Casper the Ghost Adventures did not pan out, Mask Singer Duet did not receive enough votes, or have not successfully done 50 mock interviews to robot simulation perfection, or not knowing what to do when a Jehova Witness declines medical care etc. then those are the things to work on. One just can not defer to "whatever the hospital policy is" all the time.

Anybody know if they’re done sending pre-match offers? For those who interviewed in December I know they mentioned something about a date but can’t remember :/

I too interviewed in December and they told us we would hear back around the second week of January for pre-match offers. They’re giving out 40 pre-match offers so I doubt they’re done given that there’s still interview days pending.

Does anyone know how we should dress for the meet and greet? Is it professional or is it casual?

It really does seem like they're prioritizing people from ETX who stayed there for school and those with other factors like first gen/disadvantaged/etc. like their mission states for prematch offers. I imagine the rest of us will probably just have to wait until the Match day.

The wait is brutal!

Yeah, I wish I would have not gotten a secondary at this point, as an OOS I got too happy about it! But off to the Caribbean, I go....
Did you not apply to any other school? You have phenomenal stats I'm shocked you haven't heard back from anywhere

No No No No. Re-apply. My best friend did that because he had to get in right away....he made it work with going to Ross, used family connections to get his NY MT Sinai Psych Residency and is doing fine but still........can be a choppy road as opposed to "if only" you tried again and got an advisor to review your application etc. With those stats should not go abroad.

Man just reapply. Don't go to the caribbean

Did you apply DO?
I did not apply DO, no interest in DO.
While there are challenges, some are exaggerated about Caribbean schools
Am non traditional and don't have time to re-apply
I did apply to other schools but no go.
Am sure I can get a recidency match at Tyler once am on the other side.

My best friend was the same way, Anti-DO. Im non trad too, was former MS2, yes things are better than before with Carib schools. If you think you left everything on the football field/baseball field/ on the ice (if hockey/ Basketball court etc. then sure do it but if not, reapply is the only thing to say from someone in same situation who has been there

I mean yes I am waiting on a few programs that might give me a last minute hail mary. That said my ECs will give me a more competitive edge among the average IMG when it comes to the MATCH, and I am doing primary care thus not as bad of a prospectus, just that the Caribbean will be much more $$$.

Also much harder from what I've heard bc less support

Meh if you look at goo residency programs in the Midwest and New York they all have plenty of graduates from The big Caribbean 4. That said medical school in the Caribbean is zero hand holding, takes lot more work, thus is much much harder, and only recommended for those who can be resourceful self learners. It is not Ideal but its not as bad as it seems as long as is one of the Big 4:

  • St. George's University School of Medicine.
  • Saba University School of Medicine.
  • Ross University School of Medicine.
  • American University of Antigua (AUA)

But why put yourself through this instead of going DO?

Because am MD or Bust.... no interest in DO so i rather work a little harder in the Caribbean than studying for the COMPLEX In addition to USMLE and doing 500 or so extra hours of OMM training.

A USMD degree and a Caribbean MD degree shouldn't really be put on the same pedestal (after you match sure). I would personally apply DO in your case, but I believe you will be successful whichever path you take so good luck!

I don't know something probably weird with your app with your stats not receiving some love or a look. I assume not a good enough explanation for non-trad...."why do you want to be a doctor"......generating the dodo response "to help people". Kills a non-trad app if they think you are just jumping ship from a career without solid "wanna be a physician" justification. I think there is something more there.

I know for myself my MCAT was atrocious, did not study for it at all, and was told I just need a 510 to be in the ballpark if I can swing it being old as hell.

My Psychiatrist best friend got ill the past two years and after being MD or bust...his doctor is a DO.

Also, another guy we went to high school with did his diag rad residency at Columbia and makes more money then him...needless to say he still says "can you believe this guy?" Very Jealous.

Irony. Was all MD or bust but years later......jealous of a DO and has one as a doctor. MWahahaha

After you Match and MD is and MD, and there are US MD student who don't match.

Eh there are more spots then there are US medical student grads depending on spec. Primary Care is good for DO. Once the idealistic dreamers graduate and see how handcuffed they are in their ability to truly practice medicine due to hospital politics and insurance ethical games, high cost to maintain malpractice insurance.....yeah a lot jump ship and do other things and we have a doctor shortage with more medical schools open while the population increases so plenty of Foreign docs have to come in and jump hoops. But Shhhhhh would not let them want to know that until.......they are done. #fact.

Lets say I am in career that makes more money than MDs, and while my Eassy is not help people generic, everyone thinks that going to med school for the paycut is stupid, and some US admcoms agree ( actual feedback from a southern school not in TX ).

Am confused here.

He had MD as the gold standard and very anti-DO yet his own Doc was not MD but DO and he was jealous of DO. If you can't see the irony...sorry.

After you Match and MD is and MD, and there are US MD student who don't match.
Literally the only "benefit" of going Caribbean is that you have an MD after your name which boils down to ego (nothing wrong with that). All the benefits of MD such as better match lists, more connections, etc. pertain to USMD only. USDO is favored over Caribbean MD for residency match. If your end goal is to be a doctor period, going DO is the way to go.

More like....he wants to do primary care and DO is best direct path if that is his overall goal DO is best support and best residency option. There used to be a time when DO could not apply to MD residency but maybe not so much now, I don't know.

End of the day he is saying it doesn't matter because he does want to do primary care and is not picky but wants the MD atleast. If he is okay with the tradeoff.....just remember that when you are slummin' living in a cheap roach infested room somewhere in the carribean armed only with one green or blue can of raid (been there).

When you get a quality 2-3 hour sleep and do not need an alarm clock to wake up to go to the anatomy lab becuase you feel a tickle and realize its roaches walking over you when you are sleep. Everyone see's only the vacation side of the carribean islands......when you want to heat up that ramen and open the microwave to see that there are even german cockroaches inside of the microwave...thats when you realize all those medical student loans to attend carib med school have paid off and your truly "living the dream". My experience was only Puerto Rico, and thats a US territory and technically a US med school. Good luck!

I think we're detracting from this thread at this point lol
Yes, let's get the topic back to applications for UT Tyler.
The discussion about other med school plans can go on in another general forum, if you wish

Moderator note:
My mild request to keep this thread on topic was ignored, so I have removed a few subsequent comments.
Discussions of alternate plans can be continued in the non traditional, reapplicant, or Caribbean forums.

Trying not to speculate is killing me, so... I wonder if after interviews are all finished whether they will circle back to those of us who had earlier interviews and extend any more prematches in order to reach 40, or if they've pretty much already decided about us 🙁

At the least I am sure they will continue to compare people who interviewed earlier to the recent ones

only

only 40 prematch offers? how many students are they accepting?

I have a friend who was accepted last week and is etx adjacent! hard to say how many they’ve accepted total at this point.
Thanks, for the news. I have trouble counting these “friend of a friend” got in reports. Is your friend who got in the same friend as someone else’s friend who got in?
But it makes sense UT Tyler has continued making small numbers of offers.
