2023-2024 UTMB (Sealy)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Check your email. You should have received an email kiratalent inviting you for the interview that will show your time! Email them asap if you can’t find that email
Found it! Since the orientation already happened on Friday, we only have the MMI that day right?

For anyone who has done the interview already, how was it? Does it feel chill/laid back or is it more intense/grilling session like? I’m so nervous idk how one can prepare for this

does utmb normally not have many interview dates? according to last year’s interview tracker only 8 dates were given… making me nervous bc 3 have already been sent out
Are you checking the invite dates or interview dates?

UTMB is used to calling 50+ people each week, every week, starting early August or so until almost end of November or mid december. That should cover 1000+ people.

Also remember SDN is a small sample size, I’m sure there’s some invite waves that go unrecorded here.

There are a TON of interview days so hold tight!!

Advice needed yall.

Is 3 minutes too long for a “sell yourself and your interests to JSSOM” pitch? im struggling to get this down to the 2 minute mark 🙁lm keeping it pretty organized so i dont think im word dumping, but im worried i may lose their attention.

I think it depends on what you're putting into those 2 or 3 minutes. Ideally, you want to offer something up about yourself in those three minutes which align with the school mission (of which you may have several). Then I think leaving room for your interviewer to follow up on the lead they think is most interesting would give them time to actively listen and respond. Between 2 and 3 minutes ought to be reasonable.

Don't memorize a sales pitch, y'all. What happens if you "forget your lines?"
You're speaking to a human being, so watch their face to see how it's going and whether they are going to join in a conversation with you. 😉

Thanks yall!! This is probably the only interview I’m going in with a “pitch” since they’ve been open about having a station where we need to sell ourselves haha. Definitely will allow the conversation to flow 😁

Yep. The way I do it is to have bullet points floating around in my mind and just filling in the rest through the conversation.

The MMI stations (unless they've changed it) are like ~7 minutes long, and you want to give the interviewer time to ask follow up questions and have a discussion. 3 minutes nearly half of that so I would try to trim if you can. Give them enough to pique their interest and they will ask for more details. It is meant to be a conversation, not a pitch.

Thank you! I had it today and it was definitely a great conversation 😁

The faculty were all so supportive during the MMI and really seemed interested in my responses.

Thanks for the info. I am excited for my interview next week!

Anyone know how prematches work here?

Is it prematch heavy (like do most ppl get accepted via prematch compared to match or WL movement)?

How do adcoms typically decide who to prematch vs who to match vs WL vs reject?

Take a peek at last year’s thread to see the pattern of prematches. With some new adcoms and a new Dean I would be a fool to try to predict this year’s events.
And my mama didn’t raise no fool

Lol thank you! I did look at last years thread but honestly I couldn’t really see a pattern so I asked here! I guess we’ll have to wait and watch but my assumption is that prematches are likely for the higher stat folks (LM > 70)

Don’t count us mid stat applicants out 😤😤

Not sure how things will change with the new dean and adcoms.

In the past, UTMB interviewed over a 1000 people and admitted a full class or more by match day through multiple cycles of prematches starting the first date allowed (I think they actually waited until 22nd of oct last year?).

There is no rhyme or reason on who gets admitted when since it all depends on who they have interviewed in a particular batch. A lot of prematches fall out during the match process and so many more do get admitted during match.

Hello, for those who have attended the orientation day, is it weird to have my camera off the whole time because I'll be at work that Friday morning? Is it held on Zoom? Thanks in advance!

Agree with @Rite1234 definitely keep the camera on and treat it like interview day. Business casual is fine but most of us were business formal. I can see them saying “@realnamedoesnotmatter had his camera off the entire time so is he really interested in us?”

+ it’s a great way to learn if the school
Is somewhere you’ll wanna attend so try and get off work!

Take all interview events seriously and engage with them, you won't regret doing this.
If your ultimate goal is admission to med school, missing a day of work for an interview is nothing.

What if you don’t have a LinkedIn?
I imagine they were going to check our social media at some point anyway just to check for obvious red flags so I don't think it's a big deal if you don't have a presence on LinkedIn. I am curious since I didn't expect them to be checking it so early (and whether that is a good thing).

My LinkedIn is also getting a lot of views, but I don't think it really matters in the grand scheme of things if you do not have a LinkedIn @Hypertension!!

It should be standard practice for anyone interviewing or admitting someone to check on that person. They will google you and read whatever comes up that is visible to them.

Dont have any publicly available posts that might be political, controversial etc on FB, twitter, instagram and wherever else. OTOH, make sure any positions held, posters, presentations, papers are readily visible if you have a way to do so. Usually putting it all in linkedin with links is the easiest way.

I submitted the secondary questions a week prior, but had not submitted the asynch videos & they sent me this. Received that email 7/13

"Hello,

Next Thursday, our admissions committee will meet to make the first round of interview invitations. We are very interested in your application, but we are missing your asynchronous video responses via Spark Hire. Please know that in order for your application to be screened for an interview, we must receive the supplemental application, a $70.00 application fee, and your ASVER responses. If you would like to be considered for the first round of invitations, please send your response by Sunday, July 16, at 11:59PM so we can move forward with the processing of your application. Please use this link to access the asynchronous video questions."
Did you end up getting an interview? Just received the same email!

For anyone who has interviewed here: is it open or closed file? I’m assuming closed as it is an MMI but just want to confirm as I’m going over my notes for my interview there tomorrow

bruh... what is the point of that email then? Got me excited for nothing 🙁

does everyone get that email?
@bluebluepink it's to remind you to do your taped interview if you have not done it.
Those who did the SparkHire interview didn't need to get the reminder email.

Thank you for your response! I got a reminder email for SparkHire from their standard email address before but this email is a bit different, its from the assistant dean and has a "soft" deadline to it. I am confused why I received a different email than the one I initially received
