“Plan A” is for you to matriculate to start medical school in 2024. We certainly hope that Plan A includes NEOMED. As we have shared previously, if this admission cycle is similar to years’ past we will offer quite a few seats to great students on our alternate list through May. Our admission cycle has a long way to go until our AMCAS Choose Your Medical School Tool“commit to enroll” date of June 5th.

We also know that every year about 50,000 candidates apply to allopathic medical schools through AMCAS and around 40% will receive one acceptance offer to a medical school in the United States. Having a “Plan B” is a good idea to consider no matter how great of a medical school candidate one is. It sounds incredible, but over 20% of applicants with MCAT scores in the 95th percentile and above will need a Plan B to improve their credentials for the next AMCAS application cycle as they go without an acceptance offer.

There are several great options to consider: medical scribing, clinical research, university-based research, employment in a clinical field, or pursuing an advanced degree that will help improve your credentials and further your career once you get into medical school. If you are considering an advanced degree, you should know about a new approach we are taking at NEOMED.

We have launched several master’s degree programs that take only one year to complete that are intentionally designed to position M.D.’s as health care leaders as they advance their careers. These programs also have opportunities that are paired with early assurance to our M.D. program in the next academic year. You read that correctly: a gap-year advanced degree credential paired with a reserved seat in medical school.

You were right, also followed up with them and they said this

"Thank you for reaching out and for your interest in our Graduate Special Program!
In the next week, you will begin receiving detailed communications about the one-year masters programs that are options for this program and a link to a short secondary application to fill out.
If you stay on the alternate list through the rest of the admissions process for this year, you can choose to complete the Graduate Special Program and have a deferred seat in our 2027 matriculation to the College of Medicine."

So it seems we'll have the chance to apply instead of just doting on an invitation. Or maybe it was like this in past years too, can't tell.

Nothing specific but they did say things like “we will be very busy in May” and “be sure to keep an eye on your inbox.” Most of the conversation was about their masters programs which they said pretty much anyone interested is able to get a spot in an early assurance masters. Other than that it was just about curriculum, campus life, research, etc.

Ok, this paired with the master's program email sounds like they maybe are expecting similar movement to past cycles. Might be coping, but I'm praying this is true.

Did they talk about how competitive the masters program is to get into at all?

Wait is this real? Doesn't that mean basically everyone on the AL can get into the MD program? How is that possible if the AL is 800 students and the med school class size is only like 200? Sorry maybe I'm misunderstanding something but it sounds too good to be true.

You have to successfully complete that year to get into the next year’s class. Not an easy task.
I would expect most of the alt list would reapply to other schools, especially if they have already done an SMP to get this far.

Definitely not! I filled out super late last night and then got off the AL right away. The app even says on the bottom that this has no impact on your waitlist standing. If anything, filling it out early might show to them that you really consider the school a top spot
