I got off the waitlist in April. But either way, the odds are good that you'll come in off the waitlist. They tend to go through half of the list in any given year. But you never know, your letter might just be waiting for you when you get home today.

Congrats, MP! All you waitlisters, hang in there. Stay in touch with the admissions department. They're awesome, as you probably know by now.

I also got the 'alternate' letter a few days ago. Judging from this discussion forum, it seems like a lot of people get waitlisted. Anyone have the stats on how many people get waitlisted vs how many people actually get accepted off the waitlist in any given year? Also, is it going to be another letter or a phone call if they accept you from it???

I don't have the statistics, but everyone here agrees that there's a whole ton of waitlist movement. I can think of 8 people in my class off the top of my head who got in off of it, myself included. I got an acceptance letter, but if you get in just before registration, they probably call you to save you a few days of mail correspondence. Maybe admissions would be willing to give you a rough estimate of how many people get in? I think I recall asking and getting an evasive answer, but it's worth a shot.

The year before I started they told me there were 65 on the list and that they generally went half-way through the list in any given year. This was 3 years ago, but I don't imagine that their method/philosophy has changed all that much...

Plus with the increased class size they can take more oos students.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'm an OOS applicant who applied to many schools, and just as a general observation I thought arkansas was the most helpful and really guided me through the entire process. Linda Dupuy even gave me her personal cell phone number the day before I interviewed so I could call her in case I had any problems. It says a lot for a medical school to treat it's applicants like real people. I also thought the facilities were very impressive and it seems like an awesome time for the school with the new hospital opening and everything. You guys should be very proud to attend there! I'm an alternate this year, but maybe I'll see some of you this summer:)

hey milkman-
I noticed from your mdapps profile that you double majored with a pretty heavy course load during undergrad. just wondering- how does your medical school schedule compare to that? I'm in a similar situation...

It looked to me like the rural practice interviews were today. You waitlisters should hopefully start seeing movement in the next couple weeks. Good luck!

Hi Milkman: The rural practice interviews are on April 13. I believe the UAMS Spring tour was today.

Ah, okay. That makes sense, too. I just couldn't think of anything other than the rural practice program that would necessitate a bunch of UAMS College of Medicine banners all over the place and the admissions staff on site.

Hey, I was actually told that the Rural Practice committee meets to make final decisions on April 13th. So I don't think they would interview that day since they are making decisions that day as well. An interview last week would make sense with timing.

So waitlist movement will be starting next week!! SO excited... From next week till the end of May is going to be an exciting month and a half. Good luck everybody! And remember, if you've decided to go somewhere else don't forget to withdraw from UAMS...

Very few will be sent out early as offers to try to get people to commit to UAMS but I've heard it happens to some of the top applicants who also got accepted at top schools (apparently they can see this info from AMCAS).

For the rest of us, awards start spitting out about half way through the summer and may continue to show up after classes start. I'd imagine the big scholarships are passed out first.:luck:

Thank you JD. Yes. All students approved for the program will advance to the top of the wait list (hence, a little more waiting). I believe there were about ten students who were approved for the program. There is also the option to decline the scholarship and retain ranking on the original alternate list if one chooses not to participate in the program. Either way the letter states that a large number of alternates who do not commit to rural practice are accepted, so in reality the alternate list is really not a bad place to be as historically, the chances are good that a large number of alternates will eventually secure a spot in the College of Medicine :)

Being accepted to the program pretty much guarantees your acceptance off the alt list. Congrats.

I wonder when they will start pulling from the waitlist then... Hmmm, I know they had said that waitlist movement would start this week but it sounds like that just sent out Rural practice acceptances. Congrats again Doc, hope to see you next year!

Honestly, I think you're going to have to wait until closer to May 15th. They probably just mean that the waitlist can start moving now, not that it necessarily will. I'm sure there are a few people who've relinquished their acceptances, but the vast majority of spots will open up in the middle of May.

Yea, I figured so much, but hey it doesn't hurt to hope right? :)

Thanks for weighing in with your experience! My wife and I think we want to purchase a condo/house when/if we move down there and so the earlier we hear the easier it is on us, so I think that is why we have been hoping to hear sooner.

But hey, the wait continues!!! Congratulations to those of you who found out about the Rural Practice program! I think that is an amazing program... Heres to hoping we start to hear soon!

So how long did they give you Rural Practice recipients to respond to the acceptance?

None required for responding to acceptance but since this whole process is time sensitive if an approved applicant were to decline, I think they would need to do so in a timely manner.

I actually got a phone call from Dr. South this morning about a couple of scholarships the financial aid committee is willing to give me! Now I have to reconsider where I'm going to attend...the plot thickens...

Congrats on your great acceptances? Which school are you leaning towards? Wake Forest? With this offer are you deciding between UAMS and Wake?

Congrats!

I was leaning towards Wake Forest. They also offered me a scholarship (roughly the same amount of money), but there's just no negating the fact that Wake will cost so much more than UAMS. With my wife working, we'd hardly have to take out loans for living expenses so I could leave UAMS with "relatively" (would still be a big number, lol) low debt.

My wife and I have always wanted to leave the state and start something new, but now we have to decide whether it is worth the price tag. Oh well, it's a hard decision, but it's still a great position to be in. :) My other two schools haven't offered squat so they're pretty much out.

Well, hey, congrats on the scholarship. That's awesome. Maybe now you can leverage Wake for some more cash? Also, there are some decent places available right next to campus that 4th years are vacating.

Yea, like Milkman said, I bet you could probably get some more money from Wake now too! Of course this would just make your tough decision that much harder! Congrats on having such a great decision to make. Let us know once you and your wife come to a conclusion!
