did you guys talk about primary care/do you think that's a requisite for an II/accetpance for the first essay? I haven't really shadowed/worked with PCP's and seen rural medicine....

I do have experience with primary care physicians/Pediatricians from shadowing/community service and received a II. But I doubt that it's required.

i've a question: Does inviting to interview mean dmu is fine with our academics (stats)? now the acceptance will depend mainly on how we do in the interview?

I believe that is the case.

No. I was told by one student interviewer that they were "surprised by how little the interview matters." That it goes to committee after the interview, and they look at your application as a whole; not that the interview is the "be all end all" part of the application.

That was his feeling.

i concur with this sentiment.

there are plenty of interviewees that absolutely ace an interview, but are rejected (essentially) because the committee review that looked deeper into the app didn't like what it saw in comparison to students it usually admits. giving an interview varies from school to school, but it's usually stat oriented or a general good feeling after skimming the app. keyword here is skimming. medical schools simply don't have the time to sift through the thousands of apps that they get, only the ones that have been interviewed.

honestly, it's a real shame that admissions is handled like this, but there are plenty of prospective medical students more than eager to line up and take the travel cost hit for a chance to go to med school.

I'm slightly skeptical of the above comments. Last year DMU accepted about 2/3 of their interviewees. When you throw in 15-20% of the interviewees just botching the interview, that means that almost all the good interviews got accepted.

The sentiment is false and concurring with it is false. Interviews at DMU typically result in a 60% chance of acceptance, by even a rough estimate.

Thinking your interview doesn't mean much and that it won't have an impact is a huge mistake. The interview can make or break your application and the recommendation your interviewers give plays a big part in your chances.

you misinterpreted our sentiments. no one said that interviews didn't matter, only that it isn't on the level of importance of "got an interview? only that matters now". refer to uvrsol and gandy's message above.

i still stand by the idea that there are people who perform very well on interviews but get rejected/waitlist rejected.

Does anyone know if DMU truly follows their 60-day rule regarding a decision? Their complete e mail states: "Your file will remain under review for up to 60 days and you will be notified of your admission status via email once a decision has been reached."

Except you should treat it as the interview only matters now, and DMU is a huge school that looks for how a student FITS with the atmosphere, the only way to judge how a student fits is to see them in the atmosphere and see how they interact with faculty during the interview. The students giving you tours and everyone you interact with is paying attention to your behavior and how you interact with your fellow interview candidates and the current students. Interviewing well at DMU means something different entirely than having an answer to every question. It isn't about how smart you can appear or how much you brag about your experiences.

The vast majority of rejections are likely related to fit and interviewing badly.

Yes they follow it quite well, I received my invite on day 59.

I contend that this proportion of people is small enough that people shouldn't worry or care about it. If by skimming the app they thought "we can interview this person" and then you back that up with a strong interview, I doubt they are going to find an utter dealbreaker in your app going back through it.

I didn't think it was possible to really check "fit" during an interview, but even after only spending 3 weeks with my class I can tell you I have a lot in common with the majority of my class and I do genuinely enjoy hanging out with all of them. 'Fit' is big here, and I'm glad for it.

I think @JPickos9989 is right on - the interview is a big deal, but I think he would also agree that the interview day at DMU is VERY relaxed. Out of the interviews I went on, DMU grabbed my attention the most and as soon as I left the school I knew if I got an acceptance this is where I would be going.

It may be a little premature, but so far, I absolutely stand by my decision.

@JPickos9989 @osteohack10 @O Grady Can any of you guys comment on availability of research opportunities at DMU?

Depends on what type of research you're interested in. Bench research in relation to the basic sciences, DMU has excellent resources here and a plethora of faculty researching different topics from physiology to pharmacology and microbiology. However, in regards to clinical research, DMU is very limited and opportunities in the DSM area are limited as there is really only Mercy and Unity Point that are large enough to take on the tasks of clinical research.

This is a link to the current faculty performing research and if you click on each one it discusses the various topics they are covering.

I will be there in 12 days. Hopefully, I can secure an acceptance from this place by mid September.

The fit thing is crazy here, I feel like they multiplied me by 200 and made our class. Genuinely great people obviously. Also, wait until you meet Dean Polk, you will have the utmost confidence in your future as a physician knowing that he runs the show.

I added this school recently as well and received a secondary less than a week later. I thought it was a very quick turn around!

Interview day was great. I seriously fell in love with the school, students and city. Side note do NOT stay at hotel ft des moines, super low quality and not cheap either. The admissions staff was great, the dean was awesome and really sold me on the school. All the students were super super nice, seriously no gunners I could identify. The student giving us the tour was hilarious. I interviewed with Dr. Steele and a student named Brian. They had some softball questions and some that I wasn't prepared for. I really hope I get in. This school has shot up to the top 3 on my list. Let me know if you have any questions. They said we'll hear back within three weeks but the guy we toured with said they let him know a week after his interview. Good Luck!

I feel like they have been easing us into these past couple weeks with some lighter classes, but it picks up quite a bit very soon (at the end of August we have 5 exams in the space of 2 weeks). It seemed like first year we got a barrage of difficult classes right away like biochem and anatomy.

It's difficult to tell so far if 2nd year is harder, but most current 3rd years I talked to would say that it is harder, but more interesting/applicable than 1st year.

Thanks for the reply! Im definitely interested in DMU. Also is it true that a few students left during first year? Idk how big the class size is...im assuming it was a very small percent?
