Marian University (MU-COM) Discussion Thread 2012 - 2013

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If you don't mind me asking what were your statistics as well as extra curriculars?

I don't want to post everything on the forum as it may give away too much about my application/identity as adcoms tend to visit but if you PM me I would be glad to give you my stats and Ecs 🙂 Always willing to shed some light and help anyone else out!

yours seems a bit more specific than mine. My email stated I was overall slightly less competitive. Sigh 🙁 Im really interested in this school too. Let's see what happens and hope for the best

well getting put on hold is definitely better than a flat out rejection so there is still hope. if i was you, i'd ether email or even better yet call them and see what their reasoning was and see if there is anything you can do to improve your chances for this year. at the very least if it comes down to it, you will be improving yourself for next cycle if you dont get in anywhere. best of luck to you

Thanks for posting the info; I'm going on the third interview day, so I'm glad to have some feedback from prior SDNers to know what to expect and how well it's worked out before my turn, and still probably be in the first round to have decisions made.

I'm preparing my reading up on Duke's MMI's just to have an idea of an established program's take on this format. Couldn't hurt.

If I'm not mistaken, the first rule of MMI is...you dont talk about MMI. I dont think we will be able to give you any advice.

Let me repeat: "to know what to expect and how well it's worked out before my turn." I thought that was pretty self-explanatory. Having never done an MMI, I'm wondering more about how it will all flow that day, if it's relaxed or if those interviewing before me felt rushed, etc. I think maybe you mistakely thought I'd be asking for the prompts or something, and that is not what I meant.

I knew what you meant. I can definitely give some feedback on the run down of the day/the feel of it. I'm super nervous about this MMI deal too and it'd be nice to know how other applicants felt going through it (aside from specific questions)....too bad I can't ask anyone before mine! 🙄 Boooooo

You all should definitely check out the publication below. It will help ease your mind about the MMI. It gives the history and the reasoning of the MMI, and even possible scenarios in the appendices section. 👍

I'm sure u will get your II soon 🙂

Don't know if I trust you anymore, Dr. Meows, you've been saying I am getting my CCOM invite soon and nothing! Seems like you are quite the trickster!

Hahahaha I just have so much faith in my SDN friends! And you have no proof to tell me u aren't getting a CCOM interview either. Be patient...Dr Meows is always right! 😀

I'm with DrMeows on this one! It's coming! I was complete 8/29 and II came 9/11, so they are rolling with II's now!

LOL! I hope you guys are right! I am excited to visit Indy, I've never been there before!

I love this city. Not suffocatingly big, White River State Park minutes from downtown, Colts football........... not that I'm biased or anything. 🙂

I love White River State Park, and the Canal Walk. There's also Holliday Park north of downtown (closer to Marian). Carmel is a pretty nice area just north of Indy, especially if you like shopping; Broad Ripple is known for nightlife and the Monon Trail. I do not live in the city since I'm a country girl and love my green space, so I'm not really all that familiar with Downtown, apart from the Circle Center Mall, Banker's Life (formerly Conseco) Fieldhouse, and Lucas Oil Stadium. Southport Rd. south of Indy has several restraurants (Cheeseburger in Paradise is one of my favorites...).

Thanks for the input! I'll look into all that 🙂

Yep I do, the wife and I are flying in Thursday staying through Sunday morning🙂

You guys are getting me excited! I am pumped to visit Indy now! I've heard nothing but good things about that city. Big town with small town feel, I like that!

Good luck! Indy is great. Sometimes the traffic on the loop can be a little icky but it's really not a big deal. Definitely visit Broad Ripple for night life or to see what the younger town is like. Downtown is always fun. Surprisingly, there's a lot of good food around as well...yummy. I went to school in Terre Haute and most of my friends live in Indy. Great place!

I think we're both hoping for good news....I've got so many fingers and toes crossed it's ridiculous!

Just got an II!! I'll be there on October 19th in the 12:30 slot!! 😀 Excited!!

II for 11/2!!! I'm super excited. I'm from the western U.S., so if anyone is still wondering, they are taking people from far outside of Indiana. Good luck to everyone.

Happy Friday everyone!

I had submitted my secondary/letters/fee on 8/20. However, I emailed them last week just to "check in" on my application status. They hadn't officially marked my letters as complete even though they had them. So then I received my official complete email on 9/11. So I don't know if they considered mine complete on 8/20 (since it was) or on 9/11.
Good Luck to everyone still waiting to hear back!!!

Same thing happened to me - I turned in all my letters on 7/31 but nothing showed up. I emailed them about it and I got my official complete email on 8/27. However, I was part of the first round of interview invites (and they said those went to people complete before 8/23) - so I'm assuming maybe I was actually complete before my email because my letters were hanging around? Could be the same with you. Good luck! 👍

Well I got the same email some others have gotten that says my gpa isn't competitive enough for II at this time and I'm on hold until fall grades. However I've seen many ppl getting II with lower gpas like 3.2 or lower. I have a sgpa if 3.5. How much better should I have? I'm so disappointed

anyone else get this?

Greetings from MU-COM!

I am pleased to acknowledge receipt of your completed application, which is currently under review.

During our screening, your clear preparation for medical school, for which I congratulate you, was observed. However, your overall application is slightly less competitive than some other applicants, but the committee is still interested in your candidacy. As such, your application is on hold. The committee will review your application again in one month.

If you have questions or concerns, or wish not to be placed on hold, please email us at [email protected].

Thank you for your interest in MU-COM.

Sincerely,
Bryan Moody
Director of Enrollment Management

I think that the problem is Marian is getting so many competative apps from the home state. A friend of mine is an Indiana resident and he says that since there is only one school in the state, many qualified apps are turned down, thus not a lot of people matriculate to a medical school, MD or DO (I think its IU that is the one school? Not sure, someone from indiana correct me if I am wrong).

Marian is most likley getting really high GPA and Mcats from Instaters, and since on the website they said that they want to have a majority from Indiana, most out of state people are being placed on hold untill they meet the number of In state students they want to accept.

You are correct, IU is the only state school until Marian opens its doors next fall.

Then thats probably why alot of people are getting the holds. Must be like the University of Iowa Med School and Des Monies DO school for Indiana residents.

My guess is that they have alot of apps that didnt quite make the 3.6 and 30 MCAT mark from in state students.

What are you guys thinking about Marian being so new? Anyone afraid?

I would totally believe the whole competitive IS vs OOS point except several low gpa/low MCAT ppl have gotten II from other regions.

Maybe volunteering hours/ list of ECs? Maybe they really value medical experience over club activities.

I got the same exact email. When I asked to see if I could do anything or what was wrong basically, I did not get an answer and was told my app would be re-reviewed in a month. Defin disappointed but I guess a hold is better than a rejection ultimately.

I've been working in critical care with hands on patient care experience for almost 3 years. The only thing I can think of is that I'm still in the process of taking my Orgo Chem, but seems like they would specifically state that in my email.... Hey, we're putting you on hold until you complete your pre-reqs, like KYCOM did? But instead they stated it's my gpa, yet I've had mostly A's and a couple of B's and have a 3.5.
I sent an email to get more info but didn't hear back from anybody.

Personally I think it presents some very cool opportunities. Jedi don't get afraid. 😉

This is true. If you take a look at my MDApps I do not have the most competitive GPA, am OOS, and got an interview on the first day. Who knows what this school looks for honestly because it is new and there is nothing to base it off of. I am assuming my biomedical sciences masters degree got my foot in the door, if your post is referring to me in particular, because I remember reading they liked that on their website. That is obviously just me speculating though, I just feel lucky/blessed to get one from here at all!

But at the end of the day, again, who knows. This process sucks in general and if you are really interested in Marian just keep updating them every step you make 🙂 they will see how interested you are in them. Good luck and don't lose faith 👍
