Has anyone applied to the MedStart program yet?

Also is there anyone still on here who applied the past few years and would like to share their experience?

Thanks

I'm applying right now! I'm waiting on a LOR and that's it! Anybody know when they start sending out interview invites?

I'm not sure, I applied three weeks ago, still waiting on an AMCAS to send it over. But I supposedly heard that they don't send them out until November.

Have you heard anything about the program? I haven't been able to get ahold of them that much.

hey all

i just submitted amcas on sept 9th. haven't received a secondary but am working on the essay, anyway. I'll post again when I hear from them. As of now, my AMCAS status is "AMCAS has received a copy of all required transcripts and has placed the application in line to be reviewed by an AMCAS verifier.

I've only heard good things. Also, they have a whole bunch of full-ride scholarships that they give out--which apparently is an incredible rarity among medical schools. It'd be nice to have a scholarship worth about 300,000 bucks. You could buy a really nice house with that.

Toledo's med school is interesting because it funnels so many people into surgical specialties--their numbers rival those of schools like georgetown and uchicago and NU-Feinberg.

Hopefully this is not a burden, But submitted my AMCAS and just received my secondary a few days ago. So from AMCAS submission to secondary it will take about 6 weeks. It is good that you are completing your secondary! If you have it done all you have to do is submit it when you apply. FYI you can create a account and finish the application (have it ready to submit when you get the email). The email only tells you to create an account!
Good Luck!

Thats awesome that they give out so many scholarships. Do the MedStart students get a special priority or branch of scholarships?
Also have you applied to MedStart yet (or are you planning on)?

If I am 2013 matriculant class, then do I use the 2012 AMCAS application? The 2013 one is not up yet.

I don't think they have any specific scholarships for MEDStart, nor do I think that they give them preferentially to MEDStart students. But I'm not really sure. I haven't inquired into it too much, but I would assume that since the descriptions don't say "Preference given to MEDStart", the scholarships are open and competitive to anyone.

I completed my secondary on 10/4.
Let me know when you hear back from them (of course ill do the same!)

So what is Toledo medstart? I applied to their regular MD program, what is the difference?

if you applied to their regular MD program it means that you have too many credits to apply to MEDStart. MEDStart is for college juniors with less than 90 credit hours.

Just got an email saying that my application was complete. Waiting on an interview decision...

I got an interview Invite a few weeks back, (the first week of december)!
I finished my secondary app in early october

Received my interview invitation today (1/4/12)! Very excited! One of my letters of recommendation was very late to arrive.

For anyone who has yet to receive an invitation, I talked to the admissions office and they are supposed to have all invitations finalized within the next week...keep your fingers crossed if you are still waiting.

Just interviewed there on Jan 9th, and I have to say I'm really impressed.
The admissions dept may take a long time to reply to some phone calls or emails, but when I actually talked to the physicians/professors, I felt everyones number one priority was the students.
I'm familar with UT, and have to say I was blown away by how good it actually was.
Good luck to all the other MedStarters!

Well said and definitely agreed! A fantastic school, one I would be proud to attend.

We must have been on the same wavelength today. I emailed admissions and they said that ALL Medstart applicants are reviewed by committee on Valentine's Day. We will be notified that week.

the wait is going to kill me! although it can only mean good things if they're reviewing our apps on valentine's day 😉

no kidding, I interviewed on the 19th and they said we had to wait till feb 17th to hear back... If you guys get accepted what to you plan on doing this summer? the whole two week internship is killing most of summer job plans

yea i don't really know. i applied to a summer internship at toledo in addition to a lot of other programs. if i get into both the summer program and medstart that'd be nice. crossin my fingers.

While the wait is rather long, I am glad they are waiting until all Medstarters have interviewed, despite the fact that I interviewed all the way back on 1/9 (which seems like forever ago at this point). Seems like the only fair way to handle it...

For my summer, I am going to relax mostly but am planning an independent research project that shouldn't be overly time consuming.

I think it will be today. The decision has been made so why would they wait until Friday? Looking at the regular applicant thread, if people don't find out on Tuesday which usually is the case, then Wednesday seems to be the day.

Do you guys know if we will find out by snailmail or email? I fell like I'll be checking my email every 10 mins if it's email though!!

Quote from the admissions officer:

"medstarts are reserved for one special committee meeting. That will be on February 14th and you will receive an email by the end of that week of their decision and a letter in the mail will follow shortly after that."

well looks like tomorrow is the day... good luck everyone!

Nope....all of us will need to keep fingers crossed a bit longer. They couldn't get through all of the candidates in one sitting so they will review the rest of the pool--and make decisions--next Tuesday. Decisions will be emailed between next Tuesday and the following Monday.

Sorry I have to be the messenger of bad news....

Please tell me your joking?
I can't bare to wait any longer.
If its true, can you call in to see if you were reviewed, I have summer internships and REUs im applying to, and am waiting on this to apply

I am being 100% honest. The admissions officer said that it doesn't matter if you were reviewed yet--they do not make decisions until they review everyone. If you get into MEDStart, what's the worst that could happen...you withdraw your research applications? Seems like a safe investment.

Ahhh. Thats too bad! I was anxious to find out. Oh well, another week, at max, won't hurt.
I would apply, but there is a half dozen that I want to apply, and I need Ref letters from different professors, so I don't want to complete everything then withdraw.
Regardless, its definately worth the wait; a few days compared to months and months of AMCAS is worth the while

Any word on if they finished all the applications today/when we will find out?

given what's happened this year, i wouldn't be surprised if we had to wait until March.

One of you guys should give them a call. I am pretty sure they are bored hearing my voice every two or so weeks over the past few months.....

Just got an acceptance email!
Very excited and relieved, the wait was well worth it!

Did anyone else have an email that stated the freshman class beginning 2012 and orientation on August 6th?
I hope this is wrong, I would assume our dates would be all 2013, right?

congrats hankmed! same here! when does our financial aid package come?

Wow, no email yet here....nothing worse than a cliffhanger. I thought my interviews went exceptionally, exceptionally well and I have great stats:

3.96 GPA and 31 ACT
club leadership
strong LORs

If you guys wouldn't mind sharing, what were your statistics?

Yea! I got in too! So excited. HankMed, my e-mail also said welcome to the 2012 entering class, but I'm guessing its just a generic acceptance letter they send out regardless of program. I'm assuming the subject title of the e-mail specified the MEDStart program.

Would you mind sharing what time your email was sent? So that, perhaps, I can get my heart to stop beating so quickly.
