I was accepted to TCOM through the early decision program! Notified Friday 🙂 So happy!

How long does it take to receive a portal account after completing the secondary?

YAY! Congrats! I hope I hear good news on October 15th and I can join in on your celebration too! 😀

I know TCOM is one of the top osteopathic schools in the nation, if not the top. For current TCOM students, would you say there are any compeititive specialties that are completely off limits to DO students at TCOM. I know dermatology, radiology, and opthamology are particularly hard to match into for any MD or DO school. Would you say it's possible to match into one of these fields coming from TCOM if you work hard, ace the boards, and do research (not including military residencies)?Apparently it seems that it is very difficult to make time for research at TCOM, so does that make it very unlikely to be able to pursue one of these fields?

I think at one point in time, being a DO put you at a disadvantage for competitive residencies, but I don't really think that's the case so much anymore.

Here are the residency matches for TCOM for last year's class. They include radiology, dermatology, and ophthalmology, among other competitive residencies.

I met a graduate of the class of 2012 who matched ACGME Radiology. He told me that his class matched around 5-6 ppl into rads. Just got to work hard. Derm is possible too, especially osteopathic derm. Just score well on COMLEX, get a strong class rank, complete a combined FM/Derm osteopathic residency. Anesthesiology is really quite easy to match with a solid 220+ USMLE. Just apply widely and broadly. Ophthalmology is also doable but you gotta score well and really impress on your audition rotation -- advice from a person that matched ACGME Ophthalmology - class of 2012.

The common theme for all the above success is just hard work. Believe me you will learn the meaning of hard work when you hit 2nd year. There is no substitute for squats and oats.

How long from turning in your secondary did you get your portal log in? I still haven't got mine. Please help.

I don't want it to seem like I'm ignoring your post, but I received my login stuff 2 years ago. But, I did a search through my e-mail and it looks like the last time I applied I transmitted in mid June, and received my e-mail for my EUID login in early July.

does TCOM call to your cell phone or home phone number for the interview?? Just want to make sure...

Just wanted to post some approximate stats they gave last week at an interview.

Applications - 2700
Interviews - 850
Accepted - 600
Matriculated - 230

They said about a third of their class comes from pre-match, a third from match and a third off the wait list. So odds look pretty good if you get an interview 🙂. Good luck everyone!

(our admission lecturer said he also likes to watch SDN around match and pre-match season!)

Well Mr Admission Lecturer, if you read this, please know that I like you, and I would like you even more if you invited me for an interview! You know, I am a nice guy...😀

Hah, I just imagined your avatar saying, "I am a nice guy." It made me laugh out loud.

I put down both my home and cell numbers but they only called and left a message on my cell.

Lols

Received interview invite this morning for 10/5.
I'd say I have very average stats with above average ECs.

3.45 sciGPA, 3.65 overallGPA, 28R MCAT, currently enrolled in a master's program for sports medicine

Better for us who know what up with TCOM.

It's pretty baffling. Pretty much everyone I talk to at my school (minus one who just started there this year) didn't apply to TCOM, and I don't understand it at all. I'd love to go to TCOM! My letters packet finally got uploaded this week and I'm crossing my fingers for a call from Caroline in the next few weeks.

Are you in Texas?
I don't know anyone that applied to TCOM either but I'm also OOS. They see the 90% required in-state acceptance and don't even bother. Plus having to do two common applications really deters OOS people too. I decided to apply anyways because I loved the school enough to put in the extra effort and take the chance. Lucky for me it paid off with in interview!

I hope you get a call from Caroline soon! The school is awesome and Caroline is awesome too.

I keep hearing great things about her, and I got a little bit of that when she emailed me this past week to let me know they didn't have my letters. No other school did that, that ups my desire to go even more.

And yup I'm in Texas. My school made up for 7 of this years TCOM class lol. I'm sure you'll own the interview!

is anyone else having trouble getting on the student portal page?? is it down?

It's working fine for me. And thanks for the kind words! My interview was last month on 8/24. All I have to do now is wait until October 15th. UGH. That's almost 2 months of waiting. It's like torture.

In my opinion, if someone really wants to practice medicine they shouldn't care whether they have an MD or a DO at the end of their name.

BTW, I love mango shakes.

I wish I could get an interview from this school!!! This is the only d.o school that I would be instate for me

I have a few questions about transportation. If you are flying into the Dallas international airport, are their fairly affordable shuttles that you can take to get to TCOM or Fort Worth? How do most students get to campus if they fly into the airport? How much would a taxi, shuttle, or whatever cost to get from Dallas international airport to TCOM. Looks like the commute to TCOM is about an hour from the airport.

I also have a question about TCOM's class schedule. Is it pretty much 8-5 M-F for the first two years. What is the attendance policy? Will podcasts, powerpoints, notes be available to students? What is the grading system? P/F, numerical, etc?

most people who fly in just rent a car. from what i've heard, shuttle prices vary quite a bit, like $30-$70 one way. you should call and check. you can use either unthsc or kimball museum as your destination.

there are holes in the schedule, but most of 1st semester is 8 to 5 on campus, lots of stuff going on. 2nd semester is not really 8 to 5, there are more short days, cadaver lab is winding down.

2nd year you definitely get to stay home more, which is nice. and classes start later, which is even nicer. however, exams are now way harder. it takes serious studying to keep up with the pack.

attendance policy is up to the course professor. some are picky about your attendance, some don't care as much. every professor gives you powerpoints ahead of time, and lecture recordings that you can download. exception: clinicals and labs have special rules like attire, and mandatory attendance, for obvious reasons.

people share notes, we also get them from previous students. letter grades are given in most classes. class rank is calculated using your actual numerical scores

I rented a car for super cheap from Budget. It was so worth it because I was able to drive around and see the area. It was a lot cheaper than a shuttle or a cab.

Class ranking sounds extra stressful. How much does this influence where you match vs your usmle score? Can you still match into a competitive residency or specialty if say you are ranked in the bottom half of your class but have an amazing usmle score or are you pretty much done for ? Would you say ranking puts students at a disadvantage compared to other schools that are p/f or that don't rank?

yes, good board scores + good rotation evals >>>>> bottom class rank --> nobody cares.
(conversely: top rank + failing boards --> something wrong with student/school)

having said that, class rank is a fact of life, even at schools that use p/f because residency programs want to see it. p/f schools put a p/f on your transcript but i would bet they use exam scores to derive a rank, quartile, or some kind of comparative measure.

nobody stresses out over class rank unless you tank the boards. personally i don't worry about it

May I ask why you say October 15th? Did you apply ED or something? Or is there something I'm completely missing when it comes to dates for TCOM?

About military experience: There was an Iraq vet (medic) in our group. He said TCOM loves military - the president of TCOM was a USMC officer, and his predecessor was a prominent Army doctor (his bio here).

P.S. My interview went well, and I absolutely love the campus and the people I met. Good luck to everyone! 🙂

I know someone who had to go out of state because he couldn't get in. But there is an article from the TCOM website front page that has interesting statistics on the military connection:

"Since 1996, 80 Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine students have received military commissions upon graduation. Currently, at least 35 students are veterans, and more than 20 are in the military. Our faculty and staff include 68 veterans."

im curious too

May I ask why you say October 15th? Did you apply ED or something? Or is there something I'm completely missing when it comes to dates for TCOM?

I believe JaBoomDay was referring to this.

Non-Texas residents, MD/PhD, DO/PhD, MD/MBA and Assured Acceptance Program applicants are NOT included in the match process. Medical schools may begin extending offers of acceptance to these applicants beginning October 15

Oops sorry to confuse you guys. I am an out of state applicant so my release date is different from the Texas match thing. Early decision people already had their release date on September 15, then OOS find out on October 15, and I believe Texas residents find out in November.

Thanks rzoo!

Just found out TCOM will be contacting me for an interview. I'm stoked!!!

My stats are 29 MCAT, 3.7 GPA, UT engineering major, no DO letter. I work in a biomedical field, dealing with automation and genetics, but I really prefer people. I thought I had a good chance and I applied very early, but nothing - nothing - happened until today! It was frustrating to say the least.

I'm going over the old posts to prepare. These threads are full of little gems... Thanks, guys.

And Good Luck!! It's only September, don't give up yet.

I was complete in June, that was 3 months ago. Looking over the old posts, it is really hard to figure out any pattern...

Congrats man, patience is key.

Thanks. Yes, gotta have patience (easier said than done...). And September is still early.

I wonder where the disconnect occurs. This isn't the only school to have different stats on their website than what they reported to USNWR. - Perhaps the websites are more up-to-date.

Yeah, I bet the websites are updated after the first week of classes and USNWR receive stats prior to that date, missing some of the last-minute WL movement.
