University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Texas residency has become fairly easy to acquire. A lot of Texas schools offer scholarships for $1,000 that will grant you eligibility for IS tuition rates. I believe TCOM is one of then. If you choose the second route, you will still be applying for the OOS seats though.

Would moving to Texas just to obtain in-state residency boost chances of getting into one of the several medical schools in the state?

I'd imagine Texas is very competitive with all the people applying.

Michigan is also pretty competitive...Michigan, MSU, and Wayne have so many pre-meds it's awful...

Yes, moving to Texas to establish residency would increase your chances because after one year you could be classified as in-state for tuition and admission purposes. At least 90% of seats have to be given to Texas residents! You need to have an established domicile (own real estate) or have had a full-time job in Texas for 12 mos. I moved here years ago and attended college as an in-state resident after 12 mos. Plus, Texas is the best state anyway! I love my adopted home!!

You can only establish Texas residency by working for 12 months prior to school or by buying property. Just attending school full time in Texas does NOT count for Texas residency.

So you can't apply as an in-state resident until you have worked full-time for at least 12 months. So if you applied for a cycle and you have been living in Texas for 10 months, it wouldn't count?

I am a senior now but I won't finish college until Fall 2014 (have to take an additional semester). I'll be applying next cycle (2014). But let's say I don't get in to a school of my choosing.

So even if I did a theoretical move to Texas in January 2015, I wouldn't be able to apply for in-state residency for 2015 cycle even if I continue working in Texas for that year?

I am interested in applying here for next cycle as an OOS applicant. Can anyone tell me if I have a good chance of gaining acceptance? Here are my stats: 4.0 GPA, 31 MCAT (ps:12, vr: 8, bs: 11), Undergrad: UC Berkeley, and average pre med ECs (ie. research, volunteering, leadership, clubs, etc.). I do have ties to Texas since 9/10 of my mom's siblings live in Texas, specifically the DFW area. I have visited the DFW area several times and would love to go to med school there! It's pretty hard to find the avg. stats of accepted OOS applicants on here so I am not sure where I stand in comparisons to other OOS applicants who have been accepted to TCOM. Do you guys think I have a chance at TCOM? Thanks!

I suspect the OOS stats are a little higher, simply because Texas med schools have tended to expect 'better' credentials from OOS applicants. On that basis, I'd say you would have a great chance for an interview.

3.2 cGPA 3.16 sGPA and 34 MCAT. Messed up my first two years and my last 80 hours is 3.96, so upward trend. Also, have multiple publications and lots of clinical experience. What do you guys think? will TCOM show me some love?
Two of my scribe friends are there this year. One got in with an okay GPA and okay MCAT, but lots of clinical experience as a scribe and with research. The other was in their biomedical master's program, had a 3.5 GPA and 24 MCAT, again with great clinical experience. I think DO schools in general (from what friends and docs have said anyway) they they look pretty heavily at your extracurriculars and clinic work. Produces some quality physicians and medical students, so good luck to you although your MCAT score will blow most out of the water. Props

Any ideas if/when OOSers will hear about decisions today??

accepted!!!! I checked my portal status and it said it there!!

Thanks! I'm super excited I have been in love with this school from day one!

3.85/4.0 28 MCAT. OOS

Application complete in early June, I interviewed during their second interview week.

Yay!!! Congrats!

Just a follow up....After missing Caroline's call on Friday and playing phone tag for a few days, we finally reached eachother. I have an interview scheduled for the first available date, Nov 7th. Can anyone give me some advice or insight about what my experience might be like with the interviewers? This is also my first interview 🙂 Thanks!!!

Congratulations!

I'll try to recall as best as possible. Rolled up. Checked in and received name badges. Hung out in the admissions office lobby for a bit while being greeted by Caroline and talking to fellow interviewees. Walked to orientation. Normal presentation about the school. Had lunch with medical students. Same students took us on your and walked us to sim lab, library, cadaver room. Students walked us to our interviews. I1. I2. All done.

Interview feedback available on this site was very helpful for my interviews.

To those who have already interviewed and/or been accepted: what do you see on the online portal where you submitted your secondary? Above the blue table that has the term, application number, application date etc. it says "Your application has been reviewed". Maybe this is neurotic but I interviewed a couple months ago and I'm not sure if this is good or bad.

ETA: congratulations on the acceptances guys. Hoping I get some good news here next month.

For me, above the blue box it says "Your application is under review."

Interviewed early September.

That makes sense since the number of applicants increased

How does that make sense? I don't see this having any appreciable effect.

For EY 2012, they interviewed 829/2211 applicants, or 37.49%.

For EY 2013, they interviewed 845/2278, or 37.18% - actually a slight decline in the proportion of applicants interviewed.

The difference is that even though they interviewed more applicants for EY 2013, they accepted far fewer. The proportion of interviews to acceptances from EY 2012 was 62.7%, which fell to 55% for EY 2013.

This means a random applicant's chances of being accepted post-interview fell by more than 12%, apparently because they had much less difficulty filling their class for EY 2013. I think it's a fair question to wonder whether what will become of this trend for EY 2014.

ETA: I wish I had made a note of the EY 2011 stats because an additional data point would be useful. It may be in the interview materials somewhere but I'm not at home to check at the moment.

How long did it take to change from "invited for interview" to "under review" after your interview?

I think the trend will continue. I feel that the competitiveness of applicants is increasing every year, making it increasingly easier for them to be selective about who they admit. This is evidenced by the rising GPA and MCAT average.

However, the decrease shouldn't be as dramatic as 12% this year since they are planning on interviewing around 840 again. I'm guessing 5-10%.

I haven't received an ii either. Emailed Caroline yesterday and she said that they will only be giving out interviews for the next several weeks :/

And then that's it for this cycle? Do they interview after December?

I just called Caroline and they said that they usually plant to stop giving interview invites around mid November but they could continue to interview as late as January.

Check the 2012 and 2011 thread, some people attempted to analyze what "your application has been reviewed" meant. I read it a few months ago, don't recall if it was good or bad. I also interviewed a couple months ago but mine still says "under review". Don't know what either of it means lol. Are you IS or OOS?

Confirmed that it is bad. Just got the rejection letter in the mail. I didn't realize they were already releasing decisions for IS, but evidently they are. Good luck to the rest of ya'll.

Oh wow I didn't know they were doing that either. I'm sorry to hear that 🙁

Hey it's not that bad. At least they told me early instead of letting me hold out hope for a few more months. Actually I think it's kind of classy that they released a prompt decision.

That's very true, I'd rather know early than have to wait all the way till february. I wish all the schools would do that so at least we would could start improving our applications for the following year in a decent time.

From what I was told, your application goes into committee review about 3-4 weeks after your interview and that is where they make the choice to reject, accept, or keep it as a maybe until further review. The further review may very well develop into a waitlist thing. As far as pre-match is concerned, they give out a huge chunk of the spots a few days after pre-match. They then give out spots a few times before january. Then after that the class spots have been given out and the waitlist period really begins.

thanks for the info!

Hey so this was a physical letter that they mailed to you? Not an email?

I still haven't heard back and my status still says that all my application materials have been received..I was complete early September and an IS 3.65/26. Should I stay optimistic or start realizing a silent post secondary rejection?

I got the "this application is complete" status...does anyone know what this mean??

You're not looking at it right. You need to look on top of the box where it says "academic institution" and it should say your status. "this application is complete" is underneath the box.

This is where I looked at. My status is below the " academic institution" box

If you are rejected, will TCOM not be on the TMDSAS ranking page? Or will it still be there?

Will schools that have rejected you (or plan to reject you) still show up on your TMDSAS rank list?

Rejected via snail mail today

3.5/35
3.88 in their SMP program.

It still shows up on my rank list. Just for rejecting me, I will rank them last!

Hey gandalf, what is your status in the portal page?

Bump

From what I have heard, you have until the end of the year to receive an interview invite. They are not done given them out. Just be patient. It really isnt over until way later. I mean, even if you get wait listed, people can come off the wait list in JUNE!
