University of North Texas (UNTHSC/TCOM) Discussion Thread 2013 - 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
From what I was told, your application goes into committee review about 3-4 weeks after your interview and that is where they make the choice to reject, accept, or keep it as a maybe until further review. The further review may very well develop into a waitlist thing. As far as pre-match is concerned, they give out a huge chunk of the spots a few days after pre-match. They then give out spots a few times before january. Then after that the class spots have been given out and the waitlist period really begins.

So does this mean if we interviewed a couple of months ago with no rejection so far, our chances of acceptance increase?

No. My portal says I'm under review but I only interviewed recently.

I'm really surprised they rejected you, I feel like they have no reason to other than thinking you'll end up going somewhere else regardless of their decision. I've heard of TCOM doing that to other high stat/good app applicants.

I am surprised too; however, I also recall Gandalf having trouble answering his secondaries. Perhaps TCOM got the vibe that he wasn't interested in osteopathic medicine. That's the only reasonable answer I can think of because there are plenty of high stat/good app ppl who get accepted.

Sorry to hear about the rejection Gandalf, but with that sexy MCAT I'm sure you will get lots of good news elsewhere!

I checked with a few other people with high LizzyM scores who also received rejections.

I didnt shadow a DO so that might have been a possible reason. Regardless, I am not worried about it since I cant do anything about it anymore.

I wanted to specialize anyway and DOs to emphasize primary care....

Ya but why would they interview applicants with high stats if they're just gonna end up just rejecting them in the long run? That theory doesn't really make sense. It must have been specific aspects of the application that wasn't to the school's liking. Every applicant is different and I'm sure they look at specific interests in an applicant prior to accepting them.

I agree with this. TCOM can be very particular about things. I applied last cycle and got rejected. When I asked what my deficiencies were, I was told that everything in my application was perfect, except I received B's in two science classes that are apart of their first year curriculum. It's these minor things that can make or break an application to the mind of a reviewer. Just things to keep in mind! Then we follow up with this cycle, where I have gained several MD interviews with virtually the same application, but still silence from TCOM.

Really puts things into perspective huh?

Yes! This is the reason for why everyone wants to apply early. Applying early means that they see you before everyone else and they are more inclined in picking you when they haven't seen everyone else. They would have more spots at the beginning of the cycle and are not going to be as picky as the end of the cycle.

After reading through the last week of posts, I saw that some OOS were accepted so I just checked my status and it says..

Congratulations on your acceptance! Official notification will be sent you via U.S. Mail.

As I mentioned, it might also have to do with the fact that I did not shadow a DO and mentioned that I was not especially interested in primary care.

But in the end, any conjecture here is merely speculative.

Nick, where else have you interviewed besides El Paso?

I interviewed at A&M and a couple OOS places.

Congrats man!

Ya I totally agree, it's all a speculation there is no telling what they are looking for. But you have great stats and a good amount of interviews I'm sure you'll have multiple great acceptances coming for you in the future 🙂

Does anyone know if you get any kind of preference for current cycle if you were waitlisted last cycle?

I'm not sure about preference, but being waitlisted means you were qualified and they liked you a lot (but just didn't have a seat for you).

I am interviewing here November 8th. I just don't know what to expect on this one! Any advice??

I got a rejection letter. No specific reasons were given for the decision. I have no clue...

True. I still haven't gotten interview for this cycle and its making me anxious so I was wondering. I have heard of other schools offering acceptances to those who were wait listed on last cycle without interviews from what I understood.

Stats?

I haven't heard anything for an interview either... 🙁

Stats: IS
GPA: 3.7
MCAT: 27

I'm worried and wondering if I should just start prepping for another MCAT..

I don't think a waitlist is carried over from one year to the next at TCOM. In fact, a waitlist is good for only one cycle at every school I know. All prospective 1st years have to apply/reapply, with reapplicants given a fresh look based on current information. Did you send them a statement of interest to highlight your case, separate from your application?

Yeahh I'm in the same boat. Just not sure when to start thinking about that and looking for jobs to keep me busy a year...

For those of you that have been accepted, how did you portal change? Did it change to your application has been reviewed or did it change to your application has been reviewed?

There's always the med sci program if you think your app needs improving.
I was a MedSci who was waitlisted with the rest back in May, so now reapplied but heard nothing. I wonder if they are just going to lump us previous MedScis back in with the new ones for December interviews

How long does it take after your interview to see the school reflected in TMDSAS's ranking list?

A little more than a week for me. I interviewed 10/10.

I interviewed the next day and still haven't seen anything yet! Has your portal changed to "being reviewed" yet?

I interviewed at UNT last week. At my interview, there were about 6 med scis and 3-4 OOS. I was surprised that they were still interviewing OOS this late.

My stats:
CGPA - 3.6
SGPA - 3.5
MCAT - 27

Both interviewers liked the fact that I shadowed a DO and my experiences that I wrote in my essays. I've seen people on here with higher stats and didn't get an interview invite...I think UNT consider both ECs and stats when sending out interview invites, especially to those with lower stats.

Anybody else experiencing the slow processing time for AACOMAS? My app is still processing even though I submitted everything on 9/12.

10/18, eight days after interview.
Don't worry, it's not a big deal. They'll get to you soon!

Hopefully 🙂 If you hadn't said that, I would have asked you what time you saw the change
I was nervous since my II came very fast (< 1 week after completed) and this one has taken a lot longer

Thats what I figured. I havent sent them letter of interest yet but i'll start working on it soon. I am also a former medsci so hopefully that helps. Thanks for your responses.

Are they still sending out interview invites for this year?

Yes! I didn't interview until January last year. It was my only II and I ended up matching on February 1st. Don't give up hope. I didn't shadow a DO but did a lot of research about the profession so I could hold a conversation when I was asked "why DO?" You WILL get that question by the way, so be prepared.

Thank you for your words of encouragement. I'll keep my fingers crossed. 🙂

Indeed thanks.

Has anyone not been able to sign into the portal? I know that I have the right username and password, but every time I try to sign it there is an error

Just tried. Working for me. Just wait, maybe they're doing a maintenance in sections or something.

Does your status ever change for any rejections or holds? I've been complete since early September and still haven't heard back and my status never changed either. I called them a few weeks ago and they said I'm still under review. Should I call again?

Just wait. You've probably been put in the "maybe" pile that they re-review every other week or so. If they want you they'll call you. Think of it like a girl you are dating; if you keep calling, she'll get turned off. Just forget about it. Maybe you'll get a surprise in a few months if TCOM comes knocking!

I hope so! Does the status change specifically though if one is rejected?

Does anyone know if TCOM accepts AP physics credit for the physics requirement?

Not 100% sure, but I think if your undergraduate institution accepted those AP credits and had them listed on your official college transcript, TCOM shouldn't have any problem accepting them. You can call TCOM and ask about it.
