Anyone else having difficulties with choosing case vs cheaper state school (U Iowa)? My state school is about ~19k/year less (thanks to generous financial aid). I want to let go of case as an option (and will have to by tomorrow if I do) but I loved case and I really really want to go there. I think I would feel stupid no matter what decision I make, either go in a lot of debt, or give up a chance at a school that I think is incredible. Anyone else feel that they are in a real conundrum? 😕

Btw, I received around ~14k in grants from case too.

I feel ya. I am in kind of the same boat. I was also accepted at a state school (Ucincy and Toledo). Ucincy is a great school with a brand new building, but in my eyes Case tops them.

And honestly, I'm not too worried about the debt. Either way it is a massive investment and i don't want to have any regrets at all like i did for my undergrad. For me, i am going to the school i like best regardless of cost (within limits). Is case worth 20k (+ interest) more a year to you?

You will get a great medical education at either school. But in the end, it is up to you.

I don't know, I dont think I really have a concept of money as I have only made about $20k in my life. Its just numbers on papers, but form my calculation I would pay about $140k more in the end at case, which means a small, but nice, house.

I am totally with dakker here. The value of each school is very similar in that both will give you a quality education. Feeling disappointed no matter which school you pick is a terrible result! Focus on the positive aspects of each school and take a moment to realize you are choosing between two amazing opportunities. No matter what you choose, you are going to go to an amazing medical school and have the opportunity to pursue a challenging and fulfilling career. Either school is a fantastic result!

I'm not sure if it was here or in the other Case thread, but this is what that TED talk I linked about synthesizing happiness is all about. Fretting makes you unhappy, no matter which you choose.

I'm not saying the choice is enviable or easy, but fretting won't make you happier with your school. In fact, it tends to make you UNHAPPIER (which is not a good result imo). I wish Gilbert had some data about how to wisely make these choices but no such luck. I guess the best advice is to go with your luck and not worry about water under the bridge.😱

You're right, I'm just a little bit overwhelmed with the decision coming so soon as it is, I feel like I've been on the fence the entire time, switching between sides.

ugg, I meant to say go with your *gut,* not go with your luck...whatever that might mean. Coinflip I guess!

Seriously, though, I think a lot of us are facing a similar choice and feel your pain.

Do you guys think your earnings potential increases with Case over a public school? Do you think there is monetary value in going to a school you "love" over a school that's adequate, but cheaper?

Personally, I think the opportunities at Case does equate to at least a marginal improvement of earnings potential. The higher USMLE scores and the match list indicate more prestigious (and thus more lucrative) placements.

I also think that you will perform better at a school you *want* to be at than one you accept being at. It's the difference between dragging yourself to a job you hate and leaping out of bed to a job you love. Since the curriculum will be largely similar, I'm not sure if this aspect of things has a huge impact, but it's something.

I'm not sure if those add up to $140k, but those are the main differences as I can see them. Oh, if it's a factor, being close to a strong support network (friends/family) would also be something to consider.

Hi guys! Even though my dreams of going to Case are about to be put to rest, they will never be forgotten and I can say the same for those of you I met at SLW. Keep in touch on facebook 😛

I just wanted to chime in briefly regarding the Case vs state school issue, and say it's been discussed in a separate thread in Pre-Allo (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=622735).

It's going to be different for everyone, that's for sure. I mean, Cheasus's state school is one he's been at for undergrad! So he might not be thrilled about staying in Iowa City for another 4 years. But on the other hand, Iowa isn't even close to being a step down from Case, so it would represent better value. What I suggest as a consideration is: if you feel that you will be close to being as happy at the other school as you would be at Case, then it's going to be hard to justify the extra expense. But if you feel like you NEED to get out of Iowa City or dislike Carver, then it may justifiable to spend the extra $ to go to a place you know you'll be happier at.

Or, maybe you have family or SO at one place. That can be a big consideration as well. As an example, let's say cheasus has a SO heading to Cleveland too or is already there, for something else. Money will be earned in the future, and the debt paid off eventually. But 4 years together with your SO is something you can't get back. You know what I'm saying? At that point, you could justify the extra cost because it means that much to you.

Either way, as long as you're at a place where you're happy, you should be more productive and successful. The SDN dogma is that Step 1 scores and the residency you match in is largely a product of your own efforts, not the school you go to. I also hear this in real life from my PI and other attendings/residents/fellows that I come into contact with at work. Either way, "happiness", however you define that, is paramount. I'm lucky enough to have a cheaper alternative to Case that I liked just as much (though I still give Case a slight edge in the gut feeling department, I blame you guys for that! 😛) so that's why I went the way I did. It'll be different for everybody, but either way things have a funny way of working out in the end!

Hey guys, quick question.

I got my aid package today and was curious if mine was better than normal. I know quite a few people got all loans, but i got 15k in grants (a year) and expected family contrib of 3k a year, and all the rest is loans.

I thought that was pretty good. Anyone else get a similar package?

That's about twice what I got, so it looks pretty good to me.👍

Case definitely gave me the best financial aid package of any of my schools. If I get off the waitlist for my state school, it'll be about 10K cheaper, but I don't know if I'd be willing to give up Case for that.

Thanks for the advice rr and rhet. rr hit it right on the head, ive been in iowa city for 5 years, but at the same time uiowa is a quality school. I will let you guys know later today what I choose.

Withdrew this morning. Fifth school to withdraw and every time I withdraw I have mixed feelings. Case is a great school with superb facilities. Goodluck Myuu and rest.

Likewise. Good luck guys! And perhaps I'll see y'all during 4th year when I come and do a rotation at CCF 😉😀

Withdrew, with a tear, at 5:00pm. Time to move on. Hope someone else can make use of my spot. 🙂

Yeah, I felt the same way withdrawing from one of my other schools - but we can only choose one, right? Good luck - I'm sure you'll do well anywhere!

Very true. I'm sure you'll do awesome at case as well, I don't think you can go wrong with your choice. Good luck :luck:

I know, right? I hesitated for about 3 minutes with the mouse cursor over "send" on my withdrawal email. I don't remember what went through my mind, but I think I eventually realized that this was the right choice for me and went through with it. Then, I called Christian to seal the deal. At least someone will DEFINITELY be taking up our spot, and it will be someone who wants it bad, like mustang1 or droshan. 🙂

We'll be waiting! You owe us some starcraft game time!!:luck:

You know what, maybe if you guys need an extra person to set up a 2v2 or something in starcraft, I can still join in. There's a nifty program called Hamachi which is basically a VPN.. that way, everyone involved just logs on and it'll be like we are all on LAN.. So I'll get Drizzt to load that up too and we can have an inter-med school throwdown :meanie:

Really sorry you won't be coming in July RR. It was awesome meeting you at SLW. I know you're going to be an awesome doc, and I totally understand why you made the decision you did. 🙂

Depending on when sc2 comes out we'll certainly set up some matches (just knowing my own study habits though, it'll have to be after a block😀)

Hey thanks to you guys for opening up spots for us poor WL people. Best of luck to wherever you all end up!

Does anyone have info on whether Case has over accepted, or is there a 1:1 ratio between withdraws and acceptantes off wait list?

I'm pretty sure that Case overaccepts, as does just about every other medical school in the country. Despite that, however, I do anticipate there being waitlist movement, not only because many decide to go to other schools, but also because financial aid plays a larger role in the decision-making process this year and Case isn't exactly a cheap school that is brimming with aid.

So, if you're waitlisted, make your interest known and you can likely expect to see favorable movement on said list after May 15th.

P.S: I myself had an acceptance and have withdrawn, so I hope that one of you on the waitlist is able to take my place!

from my understanding last year they accepted 300+ for the class due to withdrawals and what not. its a fair bet that at least 30% of the people who have been accepted will go elsewhere which is good news for the waitlist.

Withdrew today. Hard as hell decision, but I took Case for undergrad, time to switch things up. Good luck to all the waitlisters. I'm on a couple myself, stay strong guys!

New computer comparison table is up.

Any ideas of what this "exciting announcement" is going to be about?

Any idea as to when Case will start pulling people from the waitlist? Technically, the last day to hold multiple spots at Case was May 1 so they should have a pretty good idea by now.

free external hard drive + mouse + backpack?

ill take that deal

Now, see. We already know about those. We're still waiting on that big announcement.😀

There were a couple of current students wandering around this thread who might have a better idea. Or, you can call the admissions office.👍

The real question now is

Will they laser engrave them with "Case Med 2013" (or similar) for each of us? 😀

Has anyone heard anything? Some decisions must being coming soonish after Christian's email on Wednesday...

Just got a call from Dr. Mehta yesterday 😀

Now the search for housing begins...

Congratulations to Barefoot!

I am also on the waitlist and have a question that perhaps Barefoot or others could answer. I have an acceptance, but CW is my first choice. However, my other offer comes with substantial financial aid. So...if and when I was offered a spot off the alternate list:xf:, are you given time to make a decision - i.e., once you are given a financial aid package? I know the deadline for holding multiple acceptances is May 15, but how does that apply in the case of waitlisted applicants who are offered a spot? Must they immediately give up their spot at the other school? Barefoot - were you given a timeline to make a decision?

I don't mean to sound wishy-washy about Case, just concerned about finances since we are still paying off my wife's educational debt.

Oh, and congratulations to everyone else who has been accepted this cycle. Case is an outstanding school.

Obrigado!

To answer your question, I was given a timeline as to when I needed to make my decision. I basically told her on the phone I would accept, but she told me they usually give the students a few days to make up a final decision, so they are giving me until 5pm Tuesday afternoon. Fortunately I'm not applying for any aid, but if I was I could see how that wouldn't nearly be enough time to compare packages. Maybe they give more time to people who are applying for aid, but I wouldn't know.

Regardless best of luck with all your waitlists and congrats on your acceptance!

Wow congrats Barefoot, that was quick! I guess i'm out of luck here...

So I finally got my withdrawal acknowledgment letter, and more importantly a survey. I can't imagine anyone checking off the curricular or school aspects as a reason not to go... the only things on that entire page I checked off was "Accepted to a school with lower tuition" and "Case financial aid package was not enough"... oh well, that's how things are meant to be. 🙂

See y'all in the beginning of 4th year... 😉

Thank you guys for WDing!! I just got the call baby YEA!!!!!! Here I come Cleveland!
