what does CCLCM think of bench research? I mean, clinical research moves a lot faster and trials are obviously money in the bank. Clinic is private and I can see them having a greater clinical research focus.. but surely there is some interest in generating patents from basic science research? Is lab research uncommon compared to other schools?
Not only are they interested in basic research (that's what the Lerner Research Institute does), but they even have an Innovations Center to help CCF employees get patents and start up spin-off companies. One of the students in the first CCLCM class patented an invention.

Yeah, how much interaction can CCLCM students have with the innovations center?

I was a computer science major as an undergrad, and worked for a few years in the software industry. My title was "Software Engineer," so I guess it makes me an engineer who loves to hate engineers, or something along those lines.

I don't mean to be pick any nits, but last I checked, I was a guy. brb.

Yep, still a guy.

🤣

Nice...Hey! One of 'my people'! I've got at least two brothers (brother #2 and brother #3) who are software engineers. They don't own business casual clothes, have scooters, yo-yos, and fishtanks in their offices, and wear t-shirts with funny, nerdy sayings all the time. Sound familiar?

Sort of. That sounds like a lot of my coworkers. I definitely have less business casual clothing than I should, and I do like the nerdy t-shirts and I have few myself. I never passed the cubicle stage of life, so no fish tanks, and I've never owned a scooter, but I want a segway oh so badly...

I seriously thought aloud when at CCLCM that if they really want to have street-cred they should seriously think about renting segways for their tours...that'd be awesome. They do segway tours in major cities like Chicago downtown all the time, so it isn't out of the realm of possibility. Plus, every hospital is ADA compliant, so no phyiscal barriers. And the groups are small, so they could do it. Imagine all the free-publicity they'd get? A bunch of applicants zooming around on segways in dark blue suits...the site is beyond words...

going to casewestern this monday. any little things i must take note of?

well you obviously want to take note of the school's address. in Case you turn a little too West..ern?

sorry for being useless

i want my decision. now. hows that for revive

Redrower, I looked at your stats! Wow! You are a very blessed/lucky guy! I am sure you will do well at ALL 13(!) of those schools you are interviewing with!

Hey, I am just floored I was given an interview at both programs! What a blast! In some ways, I don't want the fantasy to end! Let them take their time! It's like having a lottery ticket and dreaming about what I'm gonna do when I win...it's the best part [says the guy who has never won!]

Besides, next year the celebrations are over, and there will be no alcohol in the study room. So I don't feel like rushing anything!

The 12th and 13th. Also know as The Second Day of Eggplant Win.

I figure it'll be a few more weeks...fine by me. I'd rather they take their time and review as opposed to making snap decisions (a la the Mayo folks...:poke:)

I interviewed on september 29th and had my decision by the 15th, so 2-3 weeks doesn't seem like an unreasonable expectation.

If you interviewed 10/13 or earlier, your application was reviewed in committee on 10/19 and should be hearing a decision soon. If you interviewed after that date, you'll be reviewed on 11/2. This was covered in your info session with Christian.

Oops, I was distracted when one of my fellow applicants had a killer "What's special about you" response...I guess I was daydreaming about what I'd feel like if I had three kidneys...

I don't know. We had a few talks by innovations employees during our research seminars. But I just tuned those talks out, because nobody wants to patent my liberal arts ideas. :meanie:

vc7777, did you somehow fail to notice that Cleveland is an extremely obese city while you were here? The last thing we need is more mechanized transportation at the nation's number one heart hospital! What they really should do is get rid of the campus shuttles and make people walk MORE.

That is so bad that it's actually kind of funny.

You're going to get your wish from the CCLCM side, because you won't hear anything from us until two months from now at the soonest. :meanie:

Of all the organs I can contemplate having three of, the kidneys would not top my list. Although I do dearly love the kidneys-they rank among my favorite organs (along with the liver).

I think what you probably need is a second bladder. 😀

Hey, I agree my liver, kidneys, and bladder can in handy this weekend at the bar...😎

Well, I hate to sound like a broken record but last time I checked Detroit was 12th fattest city in the nation...so Cleveland is looking mighty fiiiiinnnnee...downright slim! In fact, you guys could use a couple of coney dogs with nacho cheese on them...hmmmm...nacho cheese...

I was just downright envious for a moment at Case of The Pre-Med With Three Kidneys... I had an extra tooth once, but if I brought that up afterward, it would've look looked like I was trying too hard...

Buffywannabe had a pretty cool crazy cat lady story for her 'Interesting Thing About Me' session...it's hers to share if she wants...👍

Oh yeah, I trained my cat to a leash and bring him to the nursing home. This officially makes me a crazy cat lady! I was also impressed by the extra kidney. 🙂

My friend has three kidneys, but he's on dialysis 🙁

Kidneys? Time to go see an orthopod!

(If you end up here, remind me to tell you my Myuu-dislikes-nephrology story...)

i'm starting to think i'm the only one in this thread on pre-interview hold who is still following developments hah

accepted to UP!!!!!!!! via status page, no email yet
interviewed early october

super excited
good luck everyone

Have you sent us a letter already?

No, I was planning to do it this week though. Do you know which e-mail address I should send it to? I was thinking of using the feedback system in iapply but I don't know if that's how you're supposed to do it.

I'm on hold at Case. I interviewed October 5th. That makes two holds in two days. Any one know how screwed those of us with a hold status are?

Probably not as much as with schools that fill their class before finishing interviews. Case hands out very few acceptances during the interview season because they want all interviewees to have a chance for a spot in the class. In other words, they don't interview people for alternate positions. Hence, they give out only enough acceptances to fill up their class during the interview season.

I say this knowing fully well that if I get placed on hold (which is likely), I'll also be thinking I'm screwed.

I was complete on Sept 11 for University program, have not heard anything. Should I bug them with a LOI? My numerical stats are pretty good.

Congrats!

I am on hold 🙁. I am surprised I never got an email telling me to check my status.

I never got an email either. I don't know if it was better this way or not, but I was certainly surprised when I saw my status had in fact been updated to a hold. I guess it is slightly better than 60-90 seconds of anticipation followed by the major let down I experienced anyways. This is really tough for me, because I felt like my interviews here went really well (I thought the same thing at Mayo), but now I have my second hold. Apparently I walked out of my interviews completely clueless as to how they actually went.

Congrats to those with acceptances! I can honestly say I am very very jealous of you right now, so I hope you appreciate how lucky you are to have such an early acceptance.

Although Case gives all interviewees a chance for a spot in the class throughout the cycle, they do give out more acceptances than the number of spots available in the class during the interview season. We know that applicants accepted often have many schools to choose from. Very few schools do the accept only as many as spots available thing.

A LOI pre-interview doesn't really do much good. Send them an update if you have something big/important and that will help. Endlessly professing your love for the school, while flattering, won't necessarily help.

When should I send a LOI? Obviously when I am a little happier than today but yeah I could write 10 pages on why I want to go to Case. I won't but I could lol

how many applicants does Case UP put on hold PRE-interview? i'm not sure if it's like GW that put holds on everyone.

Thanks!

What a letdown. I already knew about that! Whereas, I have never knowingly spoken to someone with three kidneys!

I'm just teasing you, buffywannabe. Actually, it's cool that your cat is so well-behaved. I tried to get one of mine to walk on a leash, but he wasn't having it.

i'm starting to think i'm the only one in this thread on pre-interview hold who is still following developments hah
No, there are a lot of lurkers on this thread. I don't think you'll hear much for a couple of months until all the apps are in, though.

Yay! Way to go, guys! :hardy: :soexcited:

Congrats!

Bummer. 🙁

I wouldn't. They may not even have reviewed you yet.

Exactly. 👍

Very few schools do the accept only as many as spots available thing.
Just so everyone knows, CCLCM is one of the few places that does NOT overaccept. There will only be around ten acceptances after the first subcommittee meeting in December, corresponding to filling approximately one third of the class.

A LOI pre-interview doesn't really do much good. Send them an update if you have something big/important and that will help. Endlessly professing your love for the school, while flattering, won't necessarily help.
I agree with this too. Someone PMed me to ask about sending a post-interview letter of interest to CCLCM. I don't know about the UP, but even writing a post-interview LOI is not very helpful at CCLCM, because the adcomm isn't going to read it before they rank your app. The one time when it's helpful to write a LOI (meaning a letter of INTENT) is if you get wait-listed in the spring. A letter of intent means that you promise you will come to CCLCM if accepted. Dean Franco would like to accept people who really wants to come here, so if you're on the wait-list, a letter of intent could help you get in.

Does anyone know what it means to be on hold? Like generally if that pretty much means rejected or there's still a Good chance of an acceptance? or basically a waitlist? For the UP.

All of these terms are kind of confusing, especially because some of them are used for pre-interview as well as post-interview decisions. I'll try to clarify.

PRE-interview decision possiblities:
Option 1: Invited for interview. Self-explanatory.
Option 2: Rejection. Also self-explanatory.
Option 3: Hold. The adcomm is postponing a decision about whether or not to invite you. You may get an invite at some point in the future, or you may not. Basically a hold means no decision for now. There is no way to reliably predict what your chances of coming off pre-interview hold are, because it depends on how many interview slots are available and who else is on hold with you.

POST-interview decision possibilities:
Option 1: Acceptance. Self-explanatory.
Option 2: Rejection. Also self-explanatory
Option 3: Hold. No decision is being made on your application for now. The adcomm will review your app again later and may at that time decide to accept, reject, or waitlist you. As with a pre-interview hold, predicting the odds of each outcome is pretty much impossible, because it depends on how many spots are open and who else is on hold with you.
Option 4: Waitlist. This is a category that is made in the spring after the interview season is over. Waitlisted people may be accepted if a space opens up in the class between April and July, but they will be rejected if they do not get off the waitlist before classes start in July.

I hope that helps.

im also on pre-interview hold and am following developments! i just dont have much to say...

it seems like a letter won't help at this point? i have a few updates...should i send them now or later? when would be an "optimal" time to send an update? I'm guessing in a month or so?

Thank you...so post-interview on hold status will change to either option 1,2 or 4 at the end of interview season? Statistically, is on hold more likely to go to waitlist?

I hope that helps.

Definitely!! Thank you so much CCLCMer!

I still haven't heard from CCLCM. I applied to both concurrently. For people who have gotten UP pre-interview hold and also applied to CP, when did you hear back from CP (after/before/same time as UP pre-interview hold)?

Thanks! 🙂

There is no optimal time. If the updates you have now are pretty much all the updates you'll get, submit now. No point in waiting. The later you submit, the later your potential interview is.

Thank you...so post-interview on hold status will change to either option 1,2 or 4 at the end of interview season? Statistically, is on hold more likely to go to waitlist?

I don't have statistics and can't say anything definitive other than historically people are accepted from the hold list before the end of interview season (maybe Jan or Feb). As for how many fall in that category, I have no idea.

Sometimes people get accepted from the post-interview hold list before the end of interview season (January or February). But yes, at the end of interview season (March), all of the post-interview holds will change to one of those other statuses. As for the percentages of people who get rejected, waitlisted or directly accepted from the hold list, I really couldn't tell you. I don't think any of us can. Sorry.
