Gez though, I think I'm going to get placed on the waitlist (hopefully not rejected). My group was FULL of insane candidates. There were 3 from Stanford, a couple from Harvard, one from Yale, another from UC Berkeley, etc. Plus, ALL of them had already been to 5-8 interviews. A few already had acceptances. This was my freaking first interview this year. When I heard all that, I thought, "well, it was nice knowing you Case."

Now, see, when I came to interview I was in the same situation. I just think "wow, I'm so glad I didn't have to spend all that money."👍

I think that's what happened with me as well. My faculty interviewer literally told me, "Well, I can't tell you how the admissions committee will decide because you never know, but I can tell you that you are going to receive one heck of a recommendation from me."

Did I somehow miss out on the memo that today is opposite day? No, seriously, did my post come across as being a spoof to you? How on earth did you come to that conclusion based on what I wrote? 😕

The interviewer told me I'm a great applicant, well-rounded, good fit ....blah, blah. I'm guessing they say that to everyone? Or may be I read too much into it.....

None of us knows what that interviewer was thinking. You could have misinterpreted him, or he could have supported you as an immediate accept but not been able to convince the rest of the adcomm. It's not like he gets to individually decide whether or not you get in!

Everyone understands that the app process is frustrating and confusing. That's why the other current students and I who have been posting in this thread are doing our best to help clarify the way it all works and answer everyone's questions. I hope this comes across in the spirit of helpfulness that I mean it in, but maybe what you really need is some time away from this website. For that matter, maybe that's what I need, too, because some of these posts are starting to get to me. Not to pile on you when you're already down, but your response to my last post makes me feel like writing it was a total waste of my time.

Just so that all of you understand, student input is a big deal. People tend to relax more with students, and sometimes they forget that hey, this is a real interview! That student you're cutting it up with could sink your app if you go too far and come across as unprofessional or difficult to get along with. I'm not saying to be paranoid about every word you say, but you do need to remember that the entire time you are on campus is part of your interview, not just while you're talking one-on-one with the faculty interviewers.

This is actually the second year we've been doing it. The adcomm found the formal student input to be helpful enough last year to continue having them this year. There are now three formal opinions instead of just two, and plus the student interviews tend to be focused almost exclusively on fit.

How's that a mistake? Maybe people just want to share their interview experiences. In all my interviews we talked a lot about our other interviews and whatnot, and because of it, I was able to find someone who's attending a future interview with me and we managed to share a rental and stuff. So why not? Not everyone who talks about interviews is looking to impress, you know. I had no problem talking about it last year when I only had 1 or 2 interviews.

I agree with CCLCMer on treating your day at the school as an interview and not just the interviews themselves, but I am not sure I understand the paranoia over not mentioning or talking about other interviews.

Schools as strong and competitive as Case know that their applicants and interviewees are going to be interviewing at other schools. I think it's natural with other applicants to discuss interviews, since that's what we are all there for, and that's what we all have in common. I even don't have any issue mentioning interviews at other schools in a positive or negative context.

The schools recognize that this is not only a competitive process for the students, but its a competitive process for themselves as well. They're looking to bring in a student body that will reflect well upon the institution and will be successful, and in doing so they're not kidding themselves into thinking that their interviewees are only interested exclusively in their program.

I even had an interviewer, at a school that will remain nameless, ask me where I had interviewed and where I planned on interviewing. THIS question I answered vaguely (my strategy is usually to start by saying I applied to 25 schools, which makes enumerating them seem tedious).

I do think there's a line you don't want to cross. You don't want to say "I LOVED MY INTERVIEW AT AWESOMETOWN MEDICAL COLLEGE. IT'S MY TOP CHOICE AND I HOPE I GET IN THERE." But saying that you had an interview at CommonlyAppliedToMedicalSchool, and it was very friendly and laid back and the campus is well kept...I guess I just don't see the big deal. Perhaps I should be more paranoid about these things, but I'm just not.

i tell them what im looking for in a school and how this school fits that and is a bit different from the couple of "similar" schools i have interviewed at and how its a better fit for me. and then speak about my experiences so far at that school

i really try to avoid interview conversation though. i just tell them a nervous first time interviewee that to relax. however, there are candidates that keep asking.

Right, perhaps I didn't articulate myself enough, but both you and LTTP put a finer point on it. I think the interview, from the second you step on campus is not so much a never-ending potential set of pitfalls but rather chance after chance to shine and stand out.

Let me stress that it's just my opinion. I think you both know that this idle talk starts off innocently enough, but that this question can lead one astray. I just think there are better things to talk about when you are sitting in the office/waiting room.

Don't get me wrong, I talk! [quite, CCLCMer], especially after the official interview 'off campus'.

I think I got the I love Case part nailed, but didn't explain well enough why I'd make a good fit. That's what I'm worried about the most. Oh well, time to wait. If I get put on hold, I will definitely write a letter of interest/intent fully explaining why I like the school and why I'll be a good fit. I'm not giving up on Case without one heck of a fight.

There is no official weighting given to either interview. The adcom looks at both evaluations as a whole and makes a final decision.

so i'm interviewing at both case and cclcm, but the next availability for case pushes me into jan (which seems like it would really diminish my chances at an acceptance, but i guess i can't do much about it). i'd rather not wait that long for cclcm since interviews are still available in nov/dec. i don't really mind splitting up the interviews and going twice, but i just wanted to know if it would be worth it (i.e., is cclcm rolling?) have people interviewed at cclcm and case in jan and gotten in?? thanks

For the UP, Case keeps slots open for their class throughout the interview season. They told us that they do so to give everyone that interviews an equal chance of gaining an acceptance regardless of month.

I basically think you're all partially right. What I mean is, I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with discussing interview day experiences if the subject is relevant to what's being discussed. Case does know that you're interviewing at other schools also, so it's not a big surprise. And it only makes sense that you will run into people you've met at other schools, especially if you're both interviewing at multiple schools in this area. There's no need to pretend like you don't know each other if that happens.

But I also agree with vc7777 that the point of interviewing at Case is not to discuss other schools-it's to discuss Case. You want to see if THIS school is a good fit for you. Yes, you are comparing Case to other schools that you've visited, especially if you're already accepted elsewhere. But talking about other med schools while you're here at Case is kind of like going on a date and talking about previous people you've dated. No, it's not an inherently horrible thing to do, and it's probably fine in small amounts. But yes, it can be kind of tacky and even insulting if you do it too much. As the saying goes, you should love the one you're with. 😉

CCLCM is semi-rolling. Search this thread for the word semi-rolling for the explanation of how we do admissions here. To answer your second question, I interviewed at both programs in January and was accepted to both. At least one of my classmates interviewed on the very last day in February and was accepted.

By the way, if you want to interview earlier for the UP, call their admissions office and ask if any spots have opened up. Sometimes people cancel, and you may luck out and get an earlier interview if they have a free spot.

So I felt like some of it was pretty obvious, a couple nuggets were nice to know, but for the most part, "know thyself." Which, again, I felt to be pretty common sense.

OK, I'll tip my hand: Yeah, I wasn't very impressed, and a little disappointed with the book. But when friends of mine asked if I knew of any books, I felt like there was no other reasonable option. I also didn't finish the tasks. I feel like there are more qualified people than him on SDN who could write a better book. That's just my opinion, of course. And I don't just mean for older students, but even the younger folks out there who don't have a whole lot of interviewing experience. I wish there was a nicer resource out there to help them.

I was a computer science major as an undergrad, and worked for a few years in the software industry. My title was "Software Engineer," so I guess it makes me an engineer who loves to hate engineers, or something along those lines.

yea, ideally its CCLCM and then PSTP at Pitt. I like the curriculum at CCLCM better so far from what I have read. But transplant immunology program at Pitt is pretty impressive

yea, ideally its CCLCM and then PSTP at Pitt. I like the curriculum at CCLCM better so far from what I have read. But transplant immunology program at Pitt is pretty impressive

Pitt's CSTP was one of the other programs I was deciding between if I didn't come here. I don't know if they still have it set up that way, but when I applied there was a four year and a five year version.

AFAIK both the CSTP and PSTP are 5 year programs.

So it is. But when I applied in 2005, there was definitely a four year research MD option of some kind.

what does CCLCM think of bench research? I mean, clinical research moves a lot faster and trials are obviously money in the bank. Clinic is private and I can see them having a greater clinical research focus.. but surely there is some interest in generating patents from basic science research? Is lab research uncommon compared to other schools?

OK, I'll tip my hand: Yeah, I wasn't very impressed, and a little disappointed with the book. But when friends of mine asked if I knew of any books, I felt like there was no other reasonable option. I also didn't finish the tasks. I feel like there are more qualified people than him on SDN who could write a better book. That's just my opinion, of course. And I don't just mean for older students, but even the younger folks out there who don't have a whole lot of interviewing experience. I wish there was a nicer resource out there to help them.

Yeah, that book was pretty much a collection of obvious noninsight after obvious noninsight... I also didn't much care for his writing style, but that's probably just me...
