To each, his own. IF the idea is to get in and get out, sure. Then the math is truly "4 > 5". But I love research.
I like the UP alot, and I love the school, don't get me wrong. I have a difficult decision in the next few months, for sure!
But I had (sort of) an epiphany a couple of weeks ago...the lotto billboards caught my eye (two identical ones on my long commute in the morning) because the number hit $200M, a nice big, round number...so I did the driving-not-fully-aware-of-what-you-are-doing-auto-pilot-daydream thing and effortlessly came up with: "if I could go anywhere I was accepted, assuming I got the opportunity I'd go to CCLCM"...I think if you are research oriented, the opportunity to be trained by, and steeped in, a successful research organization is a golden chance. For me, the scholarship is completely secondary.
To quote Tolstoy (again):
"All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way"
Well, I can tell you first hand, the culture of a research team is much like a family, having been a part of several disfunctional teams! The culture of collaboration at Cleveland Clinic is possibly its greatest asset, be it in research or in patient care. I would jump at the chance to attend somewhere that has it right. That's not to say the place is perfect or politic-free (I'm not naive). Or that I am perfect for the program (or even stand a chance of getting in!) or that the program is perfect for anyone else. But they've got a good thing going, by my account.
For me, I intend to do research in medicine (and practice, of course) wherever I end up and that seems to resonate with the CCLCM mission statement. I respect your opinion, but I have to agree with my man H!🙂
