Interviewing early January. If I don't find a host, I don't mind paying some extra money for Carnegie if it makes things much more convenient than Suites. Otherwise, cheaper is better (and of course student hosting is best because I really want to meet you guys!).

Also, one more question that may be somewhat silly to ask, but are credit cards widely accepted in Cleveland (e.g., cabs, bus ticket sales)?
And, is it safe to go out to eat at night (I would assume yes, but some Interview Feedback is saying otherwise)? Alone? If so, what's a good place?

My recollection is a bit dated, but assuming the case/CCLCM rate is available, I think the price difference between suites and the Carnegie ICs was about $10.

Also, the Intercontinental on Carnegie is running a Point Break promotion through the hotel's version of their frequent flyer miles where you can stay there for only 5000 points (http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/pc...nts/us/hre/pointbreaks/us.html?rateCode=IVANI). The cool thing about this is that you can buy 5000 points for $67.50 at https://buy.points.com/priorityclub/landing_buy.jsp. In a nutshell, stay at the IC on Carnegie for $67.50 including taxes, fees, etc. PM me if you want more info about this.

As an aside, I have 10,000 priority club points laying around if you'd prefer to work something out with me directly and don't want the hassle of buying points. I can even book the stay for you. Travel planning happens to be a hobby of mine. Again, PM with questions/more info.

Logistics question for you guys. Can I make a 5:30 flight? How close is the airport to the school? I know I can skip the wrap-up section and leave at 3:40 but is that enough time?

Possible, but tight. Try calling our office to see if you can score morning a morning faculty interview to speed things along.👍

I had no idea that you were such a travel planning guru in your spare time, iceman77_7. In that case, don't give those points to the applicants. I want to hire your points and you to book my interview travel next year. 😀

Are you asking about UP or CCLCM? If it's CCLCM, it would definitely be tight. Even in optimal conditions, you should give yourself 45 minutes to an hour to get to the airport, depending on whether you go by car or train. Considering how hit-or-miss the weather is this time of year, you'd probably have to leave right after your last interview and miss the last hour of the interview day. That's when they discuss the evaluation system, financial aid, etc.

It wouldn't be the absolute end of the world if you missed some of those things, but I look at it this way: you're spending a few hundred dollars plus a significant chunk of your time to come here and find out about the school. If it were me, I'd want to get all my money's worth. Plus, my personal opinion is that it is rude to leave an interview day early unless you have a really pressing reason. The admissions office goes to a lot of trouble to set up the interview day, and a lot of people are taking time out of their busy schedules to meet with applicants and talk to them about the school. I realize that not everyone thinks this is a big deal, so feel free to disregard my opinion if you disagree with me. 🙂

Well I have to fly from the Pac NW so its usually the last flight of the day at 5 or 6, but I found one at 745 so I should be fine. Thanks guys.

Iceman77_7, you rock!

Just wanted to note that if you buy points, it takes up to roughly 48 hours, according to the website for them to post to you account. I purchased some, and they are not there yet. So don't wait till the last minute to buy them!

Yeah the only flight I could get back to SoCal was at 5:45. I feel bad but I'll have to end up leaving early.

hey for any of you that have been interviewed already for CCLCM, how indept do they grill you about your research? and also about healthcare? Im an international student and dont know how much i should know abt healthcare esp with all the reform bills being passed. Also how soon after the interview do we get a response? i have mine scheduled for end of january and im nervous/excited.

From my CCLCM interview experience, interviewers seemed to be concerned more about my personality and ability to work in teams than my ability to butter up the story about my research. Right up front, my interviewer told me that I would prolly be excellent at telling people about my research and why I chose to do medicine...etc because I prolly had performed this ritual many times - hence he did not ask these questions all that much. It may sound cliche but the best way to do it is to get a good night's sleep and be the best at being you!
Btw, you can see the timeline of recent healthcare debates here pretty well: http://livingstories.googlelabs.com/lsps/healthreform#OVERVIEW:false,false,false,n,n,n:null;

Coffee, my dear woman! COFFEE....I need coffee in the morning, and that was the price to pay...coffee. The shuttle doesn't go to Starbucks, so I opted out. If the goal is for vc7777 to get to his interview brain-dead, then I would have taken the shuttle. 😀

Myuu, nice 😀.

Haaaha, cleveland weather was shocking enough for me to wake up compleetely. It was quite a bit of transition from Texas!

I feel you. I am from So. California and I have spent the last 3+ years in Cleveland. Who needs coffee with that weather!?!?

Yesterday and today were actually pretty warm for late December. The temperature got all the way up into the 40s, and there was even some sun. But it's supposed to go down to the 20s tonight and then the high should be in the 20s on Monday. I may finally have to break out my snow boots. 🙁

By the way, DirtyJustice, I like your signature. Anything with the phrase spontaneous combustion in it is awesome anyway, plus I agree with the quote too. 👍

Sure glad I'm back in CA for the break. It was over 80 the day after I got back. I'm striving to make up my Cleveland-induced vitamin D deficiency, but it barely made it into the 60s today and I was starting to get chilly...

So what's the re-review procedure for applicants on hold here? Would it be a good idea to send an update letter so that it's part of my file when it's re-reviewed?

Sure glad you'll be coming home to 20-something degrees in Cleveland. You'll quickly freeze that smugness off your mug. :meanie:

I don't know which program you're asking about, but it doesn't really matter. If you have something to update your file, you should send it in.

What are you talking about?😕 Cleveland is obviously a tropical paradise all year round!😏

Of course it is, if by "all year round," you mean "an occasional hot spell in August."

Seriously, though, the summers and falls in Cleveland are beautiful. What we need to do is copy the snowbirds. We could go to school from May-October in Cleveland, then spend the other six months at the CCF satellite hospital in Florida. How about that!

I actually did talk to the clinical coordinator last year about letting me do a rotation at CCF Florida, preferably in February. I had looked into it, and CCF Florida really does allow visiting students to rotate down there. I thought, hey, what could be more perfect than doing my geriatrics rotation in Florida, in February? It's still at the Cleveland Clinic, so that should count. 😀 Unfortunately, he just laughed and said, "sorry, you have to stay in Cleveland for your required rotations. If you want to take a geriatrics elective, you can do that at CCF Florida." I didn't want to do a geriatrics elective, so, no CCF Florida in February for me. 🙁

It's true. Summer and Fall are rather attractive in Cleveland. Nice try with the CCF Florida, though. :d

Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If I had succeeded in opening that up as an option for the geriatrics rotation, you'd have been thanking me in a couple of years. 😀

I'm not saying it's cold at Case, but:

Their whitecoats are lined with flannel...

It's ranked 25th, but when you factor in the wind chill it feels like -10...

They salt the hallways...

They recommend snowmobiles for students on rotations...
Listen to Mr. Michigan giving us the gears.

The part about the flannel-lined white coats would be awesome if true. Maybe I'll suggest that to the clinical coordinator the next time I see him. I've struck out with most of my other suggestions, but surely even he would be able to see how reasonable giving flannel-lined, winter-issue white coats to the students would be!

There's a drummer somewhere in Cleveland doing a rimshot just for you.

haha! All in good fun...😍

I thought a couple of corny "How Cold Is It?" jokes were in order. Ok, smarty pants...let's see you come up with better ones? (I especially likes my flannel-lined-whitecoats, I admit)

Anybody?

How Cold is it at Case?

Not cold enough, if I could withstand five minutes of moderate winds at 28º in a tank top.:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I think you should have a winter break spoof "Flannel Coat Ceremony" along with some sort of oath the students come up with...

It's so cold that:

The groundskeepers have been mulching with permafrost.

Students and residents vie to round with whichever attending is the most full of hot air.

The graduation ceremony includes an official induction into the Portage Lakes Polar Bear Club.

You should suggest it as a skit for next year's Doc Opera.

As an aside, I have 10,000 priority club points laying around if you'd prefer to work something out with me directly and don't want the hassle of buying points. I can even book the stay for you. Travel planning happens to be a hobby of mine. Again, PM with questions/more info.

Thanks for the advice and help, but I think I already figured this out. BTW, what a unique hobby! Perhaps I should ask you about planning a vacation 😉

You will definitely not be given a break on health care policy by being international. However, not all interviews cover health care policy.

If you think about it, expecting you to know about the state of health care in the US is not an unreasonable expectation at all - after all, you will be in the US for the next 4-5 years at least, so you should know what you're getting yourself into. Unfortunately, the US system is somewhat complex compared to others and may also be very different than the system you experience at home, so learning about it by yourself can be hard and confusing.

If you want, you can ask me about it, and I'll do my best to explain. It will help me learn it better as well!

So we've apparently gotten our first real snowfall for this winter. I haven't been outside to look, but I just heard the plows go by. It's definitely time to break out the boots when the city breaks out the plows. 😛

I'm hearing lots of sirens too. That's not such a good sign....

Why does this always happen wherever I happen not to be at a particular moment?!😕😡

Haha, coincidentally, I plan my family's international air travel as well as a couple of my friend's so if you have something in mind... 😎

I like planning travel too and crap, its somewhat an equivalent to craigslist-window-shopping.

call the office and see for sure. i had a 5:35 flight and my interview day ended at 3:30 and i had enough time to get there. problem is waiting for the train thing...but it's close to the school and shoots you straight to the airport.

does anyone know when re-reviews are done? I thought it was december....but apparently i was mistaken?

Hahaha...A google search pulled up this old cartoon of "Dr. Flannel"

...plus look at the gastroc's on Dr. F...obviously suffering from 'roid rage. Poor woman.

Hey anyone out there, Iceman77_7's suggestion worked like a charm for buying points and getting the IC room, got a king bed room for two nights at his rate. Well played, Iceman. Well played. 👍👍👍

I just got rejected pre-interview to the UP program, does anyone know if that automatically disqualifies me for the CCLCM program or are they not linked?

I generally don't care where to go as long as it's warm, there's a beach, and good food. So, I'm not too difficult to please.

BTW, interesting tidbit: Colder in Cleveland today than in Toronto, Canada (although not really significantly)

Sorry about the UP rejection. No, it has no bearing on whether you'll get an invite from CCLCM or not. The two programs send out independent invites, and separate acceptances too. There are several people in my class who got rejected by the UP and accepted by CCLCM. It happens.

What is your PhD in?

shoulda applied to more southern schools then!

First

To my fellow SDNers...

As we approach the all-time reply record for the School Specific forum (currently held by the now-closed Univ. of Arizona thread at 2994) AND The 3000th Post, I thought I would should lay down some ground rules:

1) No padding - don't double or triple post to get us there.

2) No deleting posts (we don't want a repeat of the 50th page-iversary shenanigans :meanie:)

3) All other methods are fair game! (alliances, SDNLive, etc...)

Good luck! Let's keep it clean. May the best post-er win!

***************************************

Second

I am looking for interesting things to do in Cleveland the weekend of the 8th. If anybody knows of interesting things going on, please let me know! Also, does anyone have the scoop on good museums to hit up while in town?

Thanks!

...Well, then I suppose it's a good thing you didn't rule out locking the thread.:meanie::meanie::meanie::meanie:

Oh shoot, I totally forgot about the Cavs (Can you tell I'm not a basketball guy?) Now I NEED to get in so I can make my friend insanely jealous. Do you think its a good argument for the adcom?

Also, Myuu I just noticed the TNG quote in your location. I propose we go to 3000 with Darmok quotes.

Shaka when the walls fell!

I still haven't found anyone available to host me on Jan 3rd! Everyone is just coming back from break (not shocking of course). I think I've emailed almost all females on the entire list. I'm going to make sure tomorrow, but I think I'm out of luck.

I'm getting there at 1 Sunday and really want to see the town and hear more about the school. What do you guys recommend I do that afternoon - on my own if I can't find someone to take me under their feathery wing?
