I was wait listed as well. My letter said the same things: wait list is 100 people, not ranked, typically half are accepted. So starts the waiting game (as if we all haven't been waiting long enough) 😛

Does anyone know which campuses have the best/worst STEP scores? Are some better than others or are they all pretty similar?

Anybody know if all these people who are getting the waitlist/alternate list letter, does that mean up until now that it wasn't a waitlist? I actually got rejected a week or two ago, and just wondering "how far" I made it. I thought they said that if you didn't hear anything, that you were on the waiting list, but I might be wrong.

As far as I understand it, you are not on the waitlist till you have been informed that you are. Before then you are still under review which could mean they are unable to make a decision, or they could be waiting for things like final grades to come out before making one. From what I know right now, the class is full, so I am not sure what they are waiting for people who haven't yet heard anything. Anyway best of luck!!!!!

Regional campuses usually have higher scores on NBME finals and on Step 1 in general. There are certain campuses which I think tend to do even better, but this is probably somewhat dependent on the class characteristics.

Do you care to share?

Also, are all applicants eligible for an interview to find out what all was lacking in their application?

At my interview, I spoke with them about the subject of Step 1 score variation between campuses. Straight from the horse's mouth, they said that there is very very little variation between sites, but recently the regional sites have on the whole scored slightly better. I believe Muncie had the highest average score last cycle, though I don't remember what it was.

Regardless, I don't really think that Step scores are a very good criterion for the quality of one's campus assignment, when the variation between sites is so small.

I'm not saying that it is necessarily due to the level of teaching, but the regional campuses do better. But, there is a lot of variety. My class tends to score extremely highly, but the students a year behind me, not so much. Their class is a whole lot different, so you do have a lot of variability. It's all going to depend on how hard you work.

Been a while since I have been on the forums. Figured I would check in and see if people were talking about campus assignments.

I got email about a week ago informing me of my assignment to Muncie. It was my third choice after Indy, and South Bend. However, I am thrilled...smaller class size, great regional hospital, and the block scheduling should be nice in the first year. After I submitted the form I wasn't even sure why I wanted to be in Indy other than that my little brother is in the area. To each is own though. Muncie is Muncie, but honestly none of the campuses are in amazing areas...even Indy. That's coming from an Indiana resident. If you are near a college town, you should be able to find entertainment when you have time.

Who knows how they go about assigning students. I thought maybe EDP applicants might get first choice, next to those "prize applicants" they are really trying to recruit to IU, and people with legitimate ties to their chosen area. Although I saw some OOS applicants got their first choice in Indy...so who knows.

If anyone assigned to the Muncie campus wants to talk about housing or needs a roommate, I am in the process of leasing a 3 bedroom at a nice place. Furnished, individual bathrooms, pool, gym, foosball (boo ya!). If you interested, PM me and I can give you the details.

i'm still awaiting a decision on my file, but i did visit the muncie campus this past week and also met with the director. i inquired about the step1 scores and muncie did in fact score the highest last year - i believe a 237 or 238 average, whereas IU's average is 232 compared to the nat'l average of 221. however, i'm sure this varies from year to year and from class to class.

i do have a question to post: has anyone received an acceptance within the past few weeks? or will acceptances now only come from those who get initially waitlisted? i.e., is a waitlist notification the only means to an acceptance at this point? thanks for your input, and good luck to everyone!

What do you mean none of the campuses are in amazing areas? Are you referring to the cities or the specific areas surrounding the campuses? I am not being hostile, I know most of the areas pretty well, too, and was just curious as to what you meant by "amazing."

do they start going through the waitlist on May 15th?

From what I know, they go through the waitlist every time a place becomes open. Since the May15th is the decision deadline, they have the most amount of movement during that time period.

Best of luck to all those who are still waiting! I hope to see many new acceptees on here in the coming days.

Is anyone else still just waiting to hear back if they are even waitlisted/rejected/accepted?

+1

they're supposed to tell us *something* by june 1st

that makes the 2 of us! my friend that had been waiting since Sept. finally heard she was waitlisted about 2 weeks ago. hopefully its good news for us soon!

i just don't understand why some people have been told they're on the waitlist, and others have been told nothing. would they really not even let us know if we are waitlisted? a silent rejection post-interview is just not kosher...

Waitlisted...... Found a lot of things out, but got the official letter today also. Should be interesting.

Any chance you can clue us in on what you found out / why it will be interesting? 😕

I am on the waitlist too 🙁 Has anyone met with Dr. Smartt to see what they can do next year to increase their chances of getting in?

I called the admissions office to set up an appointment over a week ago and the soonest slot they had open was 3+ weeks out...apparently most everyone wants an appointment. I assume some of us on the waitlist will be hearing back fairly soon (if not already so), given the 15th has come and passed. Anyone else already making alternate plans?

Definitely making alternate plans. I met with Karen at the beginning of May, and she said as far as the waitlist, we should realistically hear something by mid June if we are getting off it. However, it could be as late as the first day of classes. Haven't heard about anybody coming off it yet, but we all shall just have to wait and see. My plan B is looking pretty good, but I would much rather plan A :xf:

On the waitlist and working on executing my Plan B as well. I've scheduled an appointment with Dr. Smartt. Hopefully it goes well. 🙂 Anyone here looking to do IU's Masters Program by any chance?

Glad to see you guys have viable plan B's...that always helps. I actually have been looking into the master's program. I know several folks who have done it and they seemed pretty satisfied. I guess the only thing that turns me off is the added $ but, in the long run, it all evens out I suppose. I agree though, plan A is always best ha!

I am not a huge fan of the "pre-professional" masters, mostly because it looks like you can't really do much with it, if you don't get into professional school. I know a bunch of people who didnt get in or have yet to hear this cycle. Also may not be a good idea if you have a very high GPA going in. (I have a friend who went in with a high 3.8, and her GPA dropped and was told that was a major issue, as it dropped significantly). I am thinking about doing a masters program within my current dept, they have offered for me to do a 2 years program with thesis in a year (I can carry over my honors work), and I have funding options, so I am working on that one. Plan A would obviously be what I want, but I am pretty lucky that I have such great support to give me a good plan B.

welp, i finally received my rejection via email yesterday. 👎

looking into graduate certificate programs (public health, biotech) and possibly retaking the MCAT. already have a master's in physiology (3.7) so not sure more science classes will help. reapplying EARLY this upcoming cycle with more focus on DO programs. hopefully IUSM likes persistence! good luck to everyone else who hasn't heard, and keep your chin up if you got waitlisted/rejected this cycle.

Any waitlist movement yet?

Haven't heard of any movement yet, although I did get an email yesterday asking for another copy of my transcript with degree notation (graduated in MAY) and a transcript with a previous degree on it. Not quite sure what to make of it, but I definitely got those transcripts sent ASAP haha.

Yeah! I got that e-mail too, sent my transcript w/o a degree before, and they should get the other one ASAP. I am wondering if they will have one meeting here soon and then a group of people will get off from the wait list. I know some of my friends got off in the beginning of June and some towards the end.

Has anybody received a criminal background check email this week? Does anybody know what receiving one means at this point in time?

Thanks.

I received it almost two weeks ago, but it says it's still in progress. I'm not sure why it is taking so long...

How do people usually find out that they got off the waitlist? do they call or is also by mail?

I met with the assistant dean a week ago and as of then the class was still over capacity. He says it usually takes a while until the class moves down in size to start pulling from the waitlist.

Over capacity? So that means they originally over-accepted then? Biiiiiig sad face.

That is ummm yeah..... I did not know that they over accepted at all. I was told in early May that I should know by mid-June if I am realistically going to come off the waitlist. Not so sure about that now....

I just meant that the campus areas/cities or really Indiana in general is not the most happening place in the country, nor does it offer a whole lot of excitement. This is just my opinion, so please take it with a grain of salt. I may be a bit biased because although I spent most of my life in Indiana, I have lived other places and I went to school out west. So for me, going to a med school in say Oregon or Montana (wish they had one) would be awesome, while some others would probably like to be near a beach or something. Funny thing is I didn't even apply to any schools out west because I knew I had a great shot of getting into IUSM and that it would be significantly cheaper to go there...and that is a huge deal in the long run.

Please don't get me wrong...I am not straight hating on Indiana all together. One can find fun and entertainment if they want to...and in fact I haven't even explored all of Indiana so my judgment may even be a bit premature. In fact...if your into this sort of thing...I know there are some great state parks, like Turkey Run up North of Terre Haute and some other great ones down near Bloomington.

Too each his own. Regardless I see med school in itself being an fun & exciting time anywhere you are. Just figured I would make my comments a bit more clear.

Ha no hard feelings. Like I said I was just generally interested in what you meant. I am Indiana born and bred and I agree with you that if you have traveled extensively or lived outside of Indiana you might become a bit restless or frustrated at times, especially outside of Indy. The college towns have the bars, etc. but not necessarily a whole lot else. But, like I said, I've lived here all my life and am happy spending more time in Indiana. You are right though, it is very cheap (both the school and cost of living).

As for the waitlist movement, I was told a few weeks ago that there had been absolutely zero movement whatsoever. I was definitely taken aback by that, given that the letter said about half normally are accepted. I understand that number is highly variable, but in no way did I ever think that meant plus or minus 50. I was also told they increased the spots available from 280 to 30-something, so I guess I just never completely understood how they decided they class. At my interview I thought I remember hearing they were being extra conservative this year but apparently they were not, if in fact the class is still over capacity. I guess a lot of kids held on to their acceptances this year (or a lot more so than in the past, anyway). If not this year, better luck to us next, huh.

I called the admissions office yesterday and they refused to tell me anything. They also seemed to get upset at the fact that I even dared to call. I guess I was wrong when I thought they were there to help us. Here's hoping we all hear some good news soon!

Anyone else besides me and sojourne received a criminal background check around June 4th? I am on the waitlist at a couple of schools and am trying to figure out which one or both was asking for it.

Much obliged.

I did not receive a criminal background check but I did get numerous e-mails about having my transcripts in. I don't know if it's false hope to believe receiving e-mails from IU is good because it means they are looking at your file. I guess we shall wait and see how this month turns out. I know that since the waitlist is unranked, when a person withdraws, they try to find someone similar to that matriculant to replace them. I hope we have at least SOME movement off the waitlist... 😳

Does anyone lurking here want to find a roommate in Indianapolis?

I'm looking to share an apartment with 1 or 2 other people. PM me!

Nice!, when did you get the news? and do they call/email/mail you?

I got a letter in the mail, but I kinda got tipped off by the onestart system telling me I was accepted last night. I called this morning and had it confirmed, and the letter was in the mail when I got home. I am ecstatic!
