Sorry if I'm being a nuisance but does this mean they got my hard copy too? It doesn't say anything about one.

"CONFIRMATION OF COMPLETE APPLICATION

We have received all materials required in support of your application to The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Your application will now be sent to the Committee on Admission for review. This process may take anywhere from several weeks until the end of April before a decision is reached. We will contact you as soon as possible after the Committee has completed its review of your application."
Yeah, they had to have received your hard copy for your file to be complete. It's strange that they never sent you a separate email confirmation about it but it doesn't really matter now, I suppose.

I never got an email confirmation either, but I just called and they said I had been complete - that they had received my hardcopy - since Sept. 11th.

So I guess some of us just slip through the cracks?

Submitted 8/26, hardcopy receipit 9/3, complete email 9/29.

I know someone earlier in the thread mentioned that saying "complete" meant not only that everything had been received, but also that your file was currently being reviewed by the committee. Maybe you weren't at that step yet?

Perhaps, but I think I still should have gotten something saying that my hardcopy was received.

Interestingly, mere minutes after calling I got an email confirming I was complete. Hah.

SO anyone know if both interviews are open file? They probably wouldn't let the med students read the entire file because of privacy issues, but have they read you Personal statement and secondary app?

I don't understand this logic.
Really? I don't think they would give students acces to my MCAT and GPA because that seems like private info only administrators should have.

many schools do give their student interviewers this information - i believe my student interviewer at yale had access to my entire file, scores and all.

but at hopkins, the student interviewer has not seen anything in your application before; it's totally closed file. the faculty interviewer is pretty much semi-open file because i think they give your faculty interviewer your app right before you sit down to interview, meaning they've only had the chance to skim it at best.

They are on the admissions committee. They'd need to know those kinds of things to fully evaluate you. It's not like they are broadcasting your numbers to the world, but all the adcom members have a right to know.

Thanks, that's what I wanted to know.

hey guys,

so i'm going to be in the Baltimore area sometime at the end of october and I was wondering whether it would be a good idea to send an "i'm in the area" email to hopkins. I am a hopkins alum, but I'm not sure whether this kind of email would sit well with any school. I'm also not entirely sure how i'd phrase it.

What do you guys think?

If you are on the west coast (or far enough) and are coming here for some important work (like another interview) and not a personal matter, I would think sending such an email will not hurt you. However, if you are coming down from a near by location and travelling is neither a huge hassle or super expensive, I would think twice before sending such an email.

Simple question but...

Will JHU let me know if I'm rejected. I expect to be so, but I didn't know if I should be checking my "status" repeatedly, or if they will surely tell me by email (or snail mail?).

Thanks, and no sarcastic BS replies necessary.

Yes they will let you know. I believe the first batch of snail-mail rejections went out recently. Post-interview rejections/holds will be via email. Hope this helps!

I've been an SDN lurker for awhile...but thought I'd post this info since it might be of interest to some of you:

Secondary submitted: 7/15, Secondary Receipt E-mail: 7/23, Complete Application E-mail: 10/7

Wow, JHU took their time didn't they...

Ok, I'm feeling a bit dumb...did Hopkins send out a schedule for the interview date? I can't find mine if they did.

Interview day begins at 11:00am.

Interviews start around 1:30-2:00pm

Day Ends: 4:30pm

This is from my interview day, the email doesn't give you any information.

I was complete 8/3, and still no news from JHU yet...... 🙁

I was complete a little before you, and I'm in the same boat...but I think they sent out a batch of rejections a week or so ago. No news is better than a letter right now!

Oh wow, they start late. Is there a breakfast? And yay, I didn't lose my schedule. Always good to know! Thanks!

No breakfast but lunch at 12 sharp. Have something to eat in the morning before going to the admissions office!

Can someone link me to a page on doing an M.D./M.P.H. at Hopkins? I can't seem to find it. The only thing I can find is this: http://webapps.jhu.edu/jhuniverse/medicine/
but then when I go to the JHU SOM site I can't find anything on the joint degree...

There really isn't a joint degree program, per se -- you just have the opportunity to take a leave for a year from medical school and do an MPH in that year. About 10-15 people do this from every class. Most people do it between 3rd and 4th year of medical school (after 1 year of clinical work).

Though it's not an explicit program, you are pretty much guaranteed entry into the MPH program at Hopkins if you are an MD student at Hopkins. And there are pretty good funding mechanisms to pay for a substantial portion of your MPH year if you are a Hopkins med student.

Let me know if you have questions about that -- that's what I am currently doing.

Good luck on interviews, all!

Got a snail that I thought was a rejection, but it actually was encouraging me to apply based on "MCAT performace," even thought i already applied and i'm complete! lol. Anyone else get this?

JHU is amazing.

I have to say that while the opportunities for students, facilities, and educational resources of the school are some of the best I have seen anywhere in this process, I was most impressed by the students themselves and the attitude of those that work with them (faculty, administration, and yes, even security!).

I highly recommend going to the greeters meeting the night before and then getting out of bed early and catching a lecture. You will get far more out of the day if you go to one of the classes than if you sleep in.

This place felt like home to me. I can't really explain it, and I guess we'll find out soon enough if the school loved me as much as I loved it, but this was the first place that I felt like I already "belonged." Very cool experience.

Here's to the wait 👍

:luck: everybody!

Those of you who have interviewed... best way to get from the airport to the school?

My host had recommended I take the light rail to lexington market from the airport, then transfer to the metro (which takes you directly to Hopkins medical center). This worked pretty well for me and was quite reasonably priced.

Haha i had a fairly bad experience with the light rail, although i tried to take it to penn station to catch the free JHU shuttle. With transferring it ended up taking almost 2 hours. You should probably just spend $5 and take the MARC train to penn station... No transfers involved!

Given that the complete email here is sent only when one's application is actually being reviewed, and I've been complete here over a month already, should I be expecting the snail mail rejection any day now?

Fluffy,
I've been complete for a month and would love to hear something yea or nay...Do they usually take a while to get back?

lol i've been complete two months this week... i'll get it before you probably

That is part of what makes JHU a great medical school - not only do they have the brainpower to crank out innovative medical research, intense clinical work is constantly coming through the door.

complete 9/29. invite 10/13

First of all, congrats to iCarly!

Second of all, I agree that in a lot of ways a 'bad area' is actually a positive. Lots more opportunities to practice, to see the rather rough side of things.

As much as my dream school is Mayo, I don't think (if I ever got in, which is a longshot anyway) that I would ever get to see a GSW there, which is a bit...sad isn't the right word, but maybe sheltered?

It's one of the things that appeals to me about the New York schools as well.
