For the ISPers, I wonder if you can just study things on your own at home or on the beach and then take the exams on your computer (sort of like a distance learning thing). Obviously, you will have to be present for the CAPS and for the anatomy block, but if you have that much flexibility, would it be possible to get everything done really early and then take a few months off to go home or to travel abroad. I guess what I'm asking is can you go and learn all of this at home (in another state) and just commute to Columbus on the days when there are exams or CAPS sessions?

You have to physically be present at OSU to take the exams, but you can study wherever you choose. For some people, that's at home or on vacation, as long as that works with their CAPS requirements. So yes, you can commute. One of my classmates lived in Cinci, another in Dayton, myself and another classmate lived about a 45 minute drive away.

As for the few months off: unfortunately, with CAPS, I don't think you're going to be able to get that entirely. I'm not sure what the schedule for that looks like, though. They've changed it quite a bit in the past few years.

Could you crank everything out in ISP and finish pre-clinicals in 1 year? In theory, yes. They actually used to offer that option and you will often run across preceptors who say they did ISP and graduated in three years. However, they no longer allow you to do that. You are only allowed to do so many Med 2 modules prior to the official start of the Med 2 year (it was 2, but it might have changed as they reorganized modules). These are pretty massive modules (scheduled for a month each), so if you're done with both of those prior to starting med 2, that gets you a couple of months ahead. Plus, you can start the 3rd module, you just can't take the test on it until the academic year officially starts.

In any case - don't rush through it. Enjoy what little free time you have as a medical student. You will wish you had when you're a resident.

Just booked my plane ticket for 2nd look! I'm Uber excited:claps:!!

And again - it's WAY too early to start obsessing about pathways. Enjoy the rest of your time before med school starts.

Come on, don't tell me you weren't thinking about it before you started at OSU 🙂. Not obsessing, just excited!

So, can I ask you guys a question? Please help a very anxiety-stricken medical school student "wanna-be" and let me know if post-interview rejections from OSU actually exist (by this time of the year: Feb 1). Are all of us that did not get "the call" from Dean Capers in a huge giant pile...my name at the bottom, of course... and need a HUGE miracle. Anyone have any news?

I know this type of question can cause a lot of speculation; but, I ask it because I have only run across one person posting a post-interview rejection (Metallica something or other) on the rejection thread. . . and, I wanted to confirm that was not a mistake.

Thanks!!! And-good luck to everyone. This process can be so emotionally draining.

They definitely reject post-interview (although I have no idea how common/rare it is). I think if you look back on page 12, someone there got one.

I don't have any actual numbers, but I think they tend to "defer" more applicants than they outright reject. They do, however, reject some people post-interview. If you didn't get "the call", you should check your status page for an update - your status has most likely changed.

Thanks guys. I'm not to sure about the numbers, either. I guess I have to "go with the flow" and calm down. . . Just loved OSU. I really hope it works out here, for me. But, if not, I wish you all luck. It's a great school! G' Luck to everyone else.

I've heard that they outright reject roughly 10% of applicants. But this is also Dr. Caper's first year and he might run things a little differently.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. For those who are OOS and want to claim in-state residency (for that sweet in-state tuitioin), you would need to physically remain in OH for most of year 1 while you do the self-study. I think you are only allowed to leave the state for a total of ~6 wks during year 1 while you are establishing residency.

got the deferred-decision pending status. upset because this was my number 1 school. anyone know if they really review people every week or is it more like you find out after may 15th like all the other waitlists?

Sorry about your status. I've been asking that a lot lately, too. It seems like we are going to have to wait until after 5/15. I have been "decision-pending" since 12/1 and no news yet. From what I know, some people have been rejected after an interview; but, I have not heard of anyone being accepted from the decision-pending pile, just yet. OSU is my top choice too. What a great school. Good luck to you!!

They are a lot more flexible than that. If you want to do research or find a job outside of OH during the summer, as long as you are doing something meaningful you can get Dean's permission to leave the state for the period.

Finding a job/position right where your parents are might look a little bit more fishy tho...

@lebron I know last year they let some people in off the deferred list in late Febuary/early March just as all the interviews were winding down. Unfortunately after that the next time they took anybody was in June. Good luck!! persevere with those letters of update and interest

I'm pretty sure they at least review people monthly - not sure about the weekly. They do accept some people off the deferred list prior to May 15th, but I think most of it is afterwards.

quick question, If I haven't received any scholarship awards from OSU as of today, does that mean I am expected to pay full price for the school? I am an out of stated btw

Wait until after you get your fin. aid packet. That will give you a better feel. After all, if those people who got the scholarships go to a different school, their scholarship money doesn't evaporate, it's allocated to people... people like you and me 😉

There are probably other scholarships that you haven't been considered for yet, but I wouldn't count on them. See what things look like after you submit your FAFSA. Also, remember that you get IS tuition after your first year.

When should we expect our financial aid packet? I was accepted in Oct. and haven't heard a peep.

Just found out - OSUCOM newsletter says mid April

Anyone have any insight on deciding between OSU and UC? Is that difference in ranking significant enough to make OSU a better school? I have a feeling that OSU is better for residency matching, but have little data to back that up.

I would say you would definitely be successful at either institution. They are both great. UC has a fantastic children's hospital, as I'm sure you know. So if you want to do peds, keep that in mind.

But as far as differences go, it appears their curriculum is the main thing. UC still has quite a traditional curriculum, with multiple concurrent "classes", while OSU is in blocks. The students at UC said their tests in biochem, phys, and histo synched up as far as organ systems go, but I'd still personally be a bit weary about worrying about more than 1 major science subject at a time. Word on the street is that UC is in the process of turning their curriculum into blocks.

UC made the decision for me by waitlisting me, so I'm not exactly in your shoes. But having grown up in Cincinnati I can say that it's a very livable city (though to this day I'm still scared of downtown).

Ha same, seems to be the commonplace

does anyone know if the scholarship here: ..http://sfa.osu.edu/scholarships/index.asp?tab=d#pagecontent... applies to med students?

i was under the impression that all the scholarship was just automatically considered?

theres an essay for this one, but itd be silly to write it if it didnt actually apply
.

This is a different scholarship given through the school, not the med school, so yes you do have to apply for it, and its special eligibility, so if you don't fit the criterias for it you cannot get it

I don't know but I looked through that and I get the impression that most if not all the scholarships apply to undergrads. I don't know if there are any for med students in there. I'd look through the newsletters and contact the finaid office at the medical school to see if they have anything you can apply for.

They used to have a website describing the various university sponsored scholarships (and the criteria), but I wasn't able to find it after some digging. The ones that med students are eligible for are pretty specific in their criteria, I think. There are a couple for women - specifically for women who "interrupted their education" and are returning back (http://criticaldifference.osu.edu/AboutCDW.htm, and I think a couple of ones geared towards minorities and/or underrepresented populations.

I never applied for any of the university ones because I didn't think any of the criteria applied to me, but I did have a couple of friends who applied and received some. I guess if the application isn't too big of a PITA, it's worthwhile.

just got the call.

Booooom baby!

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

just got the call from dr. capers!!!! OSU CLASS OF 2014
for those interested: interview 1/27

I've got an interview here coming up. What were some of the questions they asked at the interviews, if you don't mind me asking?

I'm sure they're not too different from any other medical school interview, but just thought I'd see if anyone could give me a heads-up.

Congrats to all those accepted, and hang in there to all those still waiting. 🙂

http://www.studentdoctor.net/schools/school/osu-comph/survey/26 should give you an idea of the interview experience (there's a subsection on that page that has Questions).

A lot of people seem to get ethical dilemma type questions.

Good luck! :luck:

both my interviews were laid back.

student interviewer asked me about my activities and what i learned from them and how I could apply what I learned as a doctor. She asked me some questions about diversity and how I would fit in with or contribute to OSU.

faculty interviewer primarily asked me about my life and personal statement. we talked about football and his family a lot too.

good luck !

deferred

expected as much, interviewer asked me 2 ethical questions, and wanted details on everyone I had interviewed and been accepted

thanks for the advice! Another question: did anyone try sending in a letter of intent, and does anyone know if that helps your chances of admission at all? Or is this fabled "Letter of intent" just an urban legend? If it helps at all, I'm sending one in, because OSU is definitely my top choice.

im sending one in too. who knows if writing one now will do any good before that may 15th deadline though but im sure it will be better than nothing once they start going through the deferred list

Hey all, I have an interview at OSU coming up, and I have a quick question:

Does anyone know how important the "recent-ness" of letters of recommendation is?

I have more than met the letters requirement, but my latest letter is nearly 2 years old, so I was wondering if I need to ask my current employer to get me a letter ASAP to show at least one current letter to OSU. What do you think?

I would say that depends. Have you significantly changed as a person since your original letters? Is there some part of your application that you want to highlight that this new letter would help you to do? If not then don't worry about it unless you are sure this letter will be amazing.

There are plenty of people who are applying after a year or two out of school. I think the adcom realizes that your letters can't always be up to date when people are satisfying faculty rec requirements.

hi everyone, is there anyone out there who just recently submitted their secondary? I'm barely submitting mine and I know it's late....just wondering of my chances...😕

deadline for secondaries was Jan 1st

Deferred here. Seems to be the case for me this year across the board. I felt I did well with my student interviewer but a lesser extent with the faculty interviewer. Hopefully the former wins out.
