For the ISPers, I wonder if you can just study things on your own at home or on the beach and then take the exams on your computer (sort of like a distance learning thing). Obviously, you will have to be present for the CAPS and for the anatomy block, but if you have that much flexibility, would it be possible to get everything done really early and then take a few months off to go home or to travel abroad. I guess what I'm asking is can you go and learn all of this at home (in another state) and just commute to Columbus on the days when there are exams or CAPS sessions?
You have to physically be present at OSU to take the exams, but you can study wherever you choose. For some people, that's at home or on vacation, as long as that works with their CAPS requirements. So yes, you can commute. One of my classmates lived in Cinci, another in Dayton, myself and another classmate lived about a 45 minute drive away.
As for the few months off: unfortunately, with CAPS, I don't think you're going to be able to get that entirely. I'm not sure what the schedule for that looks like, though. They've changed it quite a bit in the past few years.
Could you crank everything out in ISP and finish pre-clinicals in 1 year? In theory, yes. They actually used to offer that option and you will often run across preceptors who say they did ISP and graduated in three years. However, they no longer allow you to do that. You are only allowed to do so many Med 2 modules prior to the official start of the Med 2 year (it was 2, but it might have changed as they reorganized modules). These are pretty massive modules (scheduled for a month each), so if you're done with both of those prior to starting med 2, that gets you a couple of months ahead. Plus, you can start the 3rd module, you just can't take the test on it until the academic year officially starts.
In any case - don't rush through it. Enjoy what little free time you have as a medical student. You will wish you had when you're a resident.
