He wrtoe back that day. I mean it wasn't like a statement of wonder, just a simple "thanks for the note" type response...

btw, "that day" was w/in his day...I sent mine in east coast in the pm, and he sent his back around 2am east coast, 11pm west coast..

While I think it's helpful, its definitely not required. I'm sure Stanford has a medical spanish course just like every other medical school if you're interested...but yes there are translators, and you'll pick up a little spanish regardless just by being around patients so much. I'm hoping to organize a trip to Spain this summer on the pre-medical school endless vacationing...I'm really rusty and hope to get my own Spanish back no matter where I end up for school.

On another note, sent my letter to Dean Garcia this morning. How long does it take for him to reply back? So nervous about this waitlist, I'm guessing I should really just put Stanford out of my mind. But I just loved it so much.

In regards to medical Spanish, my student interviewer happened to coordinate one such program at Stanford:

http://smsa.stanford.edu/student_groups/MedicalSpanishInitiative.html

I sent my letter in at 8:50 pm (West Coast) on Monday. I'm still waiting for a response.

Hopefully a 3rd/just matched 4th year will come on and answer with more authority, but in the meantime, I'll just say there is a huge focus on clinical education here starting even in the first year. I myself am heavily involved in the free clinic, and also have learned a lot of clinical skills that I didn't think we'd learn so soon. We just started pediatric exams today. From what I hear, med students are much higher on the totem pole at Stanford than other places, and students rotating through sometimes feel bad for the residents because of how much focus is put on med students. In terms of the atmosphere, I really can't comment on that, but would just like to point out that the population that Stanford serves is much larger than most urban areas because the county is so large, so I doubt it is subdued.

On my interview day, it seemed as though many of the clinical experiences at Stanford involved non-english speaking patients and translators. Is that the case? Do you think a non-spanish speaking medical student would be benefitted in this environent as much as if he were to spend his clinical clerkship years at, say SFGH?

stanford med has a dedicated med spanish class you can take which works with the med student hours. another awesome option is to take the "full" university language classes at stanford (included in your tuition) at the main campus down the street.

you will use spanish a lot....if you don't speak it, you will at least have a basic working knowledge at the end of med school. you can always use the translator service though.

and i read you though SFGH might be a better non-spanish/foreign language hospital?? 🙂 sorry to be the bearer of bad news but i spent 4 months there as a 4th year med student and you will use spanish even MORE....almost 60-70% population at times on our service was spanish speaking. essentially any med school in california you will have about 30-40%+ of your population spanish speaking only. 🙂 all the more reason to learn!

Waitlisted ... 🙁, interviewed 2nd week of March. At least the letter was nice and not photocopied.

Good luck to those still waiting :xf:

welcome to the club of very accomplished waitlistees. Top choice? Or are you in other places?

Definitely top choice. When I drove down Palm Dr I thought the campus must be a resort or something.

Although the area does have a very small-town feel to it. Very different from the fast-paced, skyscrapers everywhere, big city downtown where I lived for the last few years. So there are no more opportunities for 2 AM sushi-runs.

thanks for posting and good luck!

I guess this means I'll hear next week, since I interviewed the 3rd week of March.

NYC? I'm used to 2 AM cheesesteaks runs. Mmmmm. cheesesteaks. And, 1 AM fro-yo runs. mmm. fro-yo.

I'd gladly give that up for Stanford though 🙂

And sorry about the waitlist. It does suck and I know how it feels.

Welcome to our world : )

Hehe, I listened to that last week actually. I spend way too much med-schooling online. I was like..."yeah, why didn't you accept me? I fit what you want perfectly!" No Garcia message yet in response to my letter. Man, I just want that man to send me a surprise phone call: "you're in!"

I haven't received a response yet either : \ Maybe he's out of town??

Finally got my acceptance packet after getting the call almost a month ago. How many here are going to the Admit Weekend?

So I never ended up receiving a rejection letter. Wonder what happened?

They're still interviewing through this upcoming week. So after that I'd expect you'll receive something.

Congrats qmacca! Are you sure you're going to Stanford? Give us a heads up after accepted students weekend if it looks like there will be enough "on-the-fencers" for waitlist movement this year. But otherwise, live it up. I'm mucho jealous.

Just recently got in, and I'll be there! When do you plan to fly in?

Did you get a call this week FutureDoc? I think I should have gotten a response by now, but no one's posted this about being called this week, and I'm dying to know what's up. Congrats on your acceptance, btw.

i think its just that people who are getting accepted aren't posting on sdn...i interviewed first week of march and got waitlisted recently. turnaround time is 2-3 weeks.

Yeah, I'm definitely accepting. I was speaking with a friend involved in the second look planning and it sounded as if there was a large number expected so I'll ask around.

I'm flying in on Wednesday because I'm planning to attend the optional Thursday events. Should be great!

does stanford actually do post-interview rejections or does everyone get waitlisted?

Looks like I'm waiting for my waitlist letter to arrive in the mail 🙁

After going through all the pages in this thread (sad, I know), it looks like the general trend is as follows (pure speculation based solely on the stuff I read in this thread, take everything I say with a grain of salt):

1) Reviews are done Thursday
2) Post-interview decision phone calls go out either Thursday night or Friday
3) If you do not get a phone call within 2 weeks, you are most likely on the waitlist at this point, or worse, rejected (if you interviewed on a Friday, your week number count does not begin until the following week since you missed the boat- see 1)

im pretty sure even if you interview on a wednesday, its unlikely that both interviewers will have their assessment done by friday. it's got to depend.

I interviewed on feb 3rd I think...and I was in the committee meeting on the 19th. So, I think it's usually the Friday...2 weeks following the Friday after your interview (Or, if you interviewed on a Friday...exactly 2 weeks).

sigh it looks like I won't be finding out before second look weekend

sigh...interviewed 20 something of March - waitlisted.

looks like I'm joining the party!

better than a rejection, oze...i still haven't heard a peep, interviewed the same week as you

where are you? I'm in the bay area and the letter was dated April 2nd but sent yesterday.

also - yeah I'm happy I didn't get rejected. Nothing to do at this point but write some letters and hope for the best.

Sorry to hear that, but you're in good company. All you can do is wait now. Make sure you app is updated with all your achievements, activities, awards, etc. and let Dean Garcia know you're still interested. If you're from the Bay Area, I'm sure you have a lot of convincing personal reasons why Stanford would be a top choice.

Good luck 🙂

I'm in LA...so maybe i'll get some news tomorrow? (hopefully a wait list over a rejection)

sounds like a fair bet, hope you don't get bad news

Good luck wolfie. Stanford seems to only reject a small percentage of interviewees, so if you haven't gotten an acceptance call yet I'd imagine your in the waitlisted pile.

Don't forget to update the Stanford waitlist thread. I think it's beginning to converge to the actual percentages of accepted/waitlist/rejected applicants.
